I’m a graduate student in the US, and to make enough money to pay for my rent and food, I have to work as a guard at the university library at night. Last week one of my friends, Lin, came to the library after hours. He told me he had left his notebook in the library and needed it to study for a test the next day. I told Lin that according to the rules I was’t supposed to let anyone in, but he begged me and said that if he didn’t get his notes there was no way he could pass the test. He was my good friend and I knew he wouldn’t steal anything. I also didn’t feel like I could say no, so I let him in. Unfortunately, just then my supervisor came by and saw Lin going in, so he stopped Lin and then started bawling me out in front of Lin for not following the rules. I tried to explain the situation, but that only seemed to make my supervisor more angry. He said it didn’t matter if Lin was my friend or not, so I just shut up and let him scold me. I realize I broke a rule, but I know Lin and trust him, and letting him in wasn’t the same thing as letting in a stranger, I think my supervisor was very unreasonable to be so picky and critical, and I don’t think he should have yelled at me, especially in front of Lin. Why could’t he understand why I let Lin in?

听力原文: My friend, Vernon Davies kept birds. One day he phoned and told me he was going away for a week. He asked me to feed the birds for him and said that he would leave the key of his front door in my mailbox.

Unfortunately, I forgot all about the birds until the night before Vernon was going to return. What was worse, it was already dark when I arrived at his house. I soon found the key Vernon gave me could not unlock either the front door or the back door. I was getting desperate. I kept thinking of what Vemon would say when he came back.

I was just going to give up when I noticed that one bedroom window was slightly open. I found a barrel and pushed it under the window. As the barrel was very heavy, I made a lot of noise. But in the end, I managed to climb up and open the window.

I actually had one leg inside the bedroom when I suddenly realized that someone was shining a torch up at me, I looked down and saw a policeman and an old lady, one of Vemon's neighbours. "What are you doing up there?" said the policeman. Feeling like a complete fool, I replied, "I was just going to feed Mr. Davies's birds."

(34)

B.He didn't know where. the back door was.

C.He couldn't find the key to his mailbox.

听力原文:W: Ah, come in, Mr. Parrot. Please sit down.

M: Thank you. A friend of mine told me the new bank manager was a worn... I mean, a lady, but I didn't expect you to be so young.

W: Well, never mind that, Mr. Parrott. What can I do for you?

M: Well, this friend told me that you lent him some money.

W: I don't think I've lent any money to a friend of yours, Mr. Parrott. The bank may have done that.

M: Yes, well, I wondered if I could borrow some money, too.

W: I see. You have an account with us, I suppose. Ah, yes, here's your file. Er, I'm afraid you're overdrawn, Mr. Parrott. How about a hundred pounds, as a matter of fact.

M: Really? As much as that? I didn't know.

W: And how much money would you like to borrow from us?

M: Fifteen thousand pounds.

W: That's rather a large sum of money. Can you offer us security? Do you own the house where you live, for example?

M: Oh, yes. I own quite a lot of shares, too. A friend of ours looks after them.

W: A friend of yours?

M: well, a friend of my father's, actually. But they all belong to me. My father gave them to me after I got married last year. He's quite a rich man, you see.

W: He must be. Then why don't you ask him to lend you the money?

M: I don't like borrowing money from him. He wants me to be in- dependent from now on.

W: So I suppose you need this loan bemuse you want to set up a business of your own.

M: Well, no. I want to buy a weekend cottage, actually.
