听力原文:In a way, all of us are on a spaceship, the planet Earth. We move around the sun

听力原文: In a way, all of us are on a spaceship, the planet Earth. We move around the sun at 18 miles per second and never stop. On our spaceship we have five billion people and limited supply of air, water, and land. These supplies have to be used careful because we can't buy new air, water, or land from anywhere else.

The environment on our planet is a closed system: nothing new is ever added. Nature recycles its resources. Water, for example, evaporates and rises as visible drops to form. clouds. This same water returns to the Earth as rain or snow. The rain that falls today is actually the same water that fell on the land 70 million years ago.

Today, the Earth is in trouble. Factories pour dirty water into our rivers. Many fish die and the water becomes unhealthy for people to drink. Cars and factories put poisons into the air and cause plants, animals and people to get sick. People throw bottles and paper out of their car windows, and the roadside becomes covered with al sorts of wastes. Over the years, people have changed the environment, and we have pollution.

To continue to survive, we must learn how to use the Earth's resources wisely. We have to change our habits and stop dumping such enormous amounts of industrial waste into the water and air. We must cooperate with nature and learn better ways to use, not abuse, our environment.

(33)

A.Because both have a limited supply of air, water, and other resources.

B.Because the Earth moves around the sun as fast as a spaceship.

C.Because we can travel to outer space.

D.Because the Earth never stops moving.

听力原文: Many people suffer from some form. of extreme anxiety. Some experience occasional attacks of panic for no apparent reason. Others go around in a state of continual uneasiness. The usual way of controlling anxiety is with drugs, which cure none of the conditions described but do help patients man age their anxiety. Patients who take these drugs say that they are able to work, to sleep, and to go to places they had feared to visit. But the effects of the drugs on the human body, especially on the nervous system, have been unknown.

We have started a series of studies to identify the effects of the drugs on the brain and have gained some insight into the costs and benefits of the anti anxiety drugs. They are valuable because they can reduce the effects of anticipated failure, frustration, and disappointment. But their value demands a price. Two effects of the drugs are obviously harmful. They reduce a person's ability to react to changes in the environment; and more important, they keep a person from developing persistence in the face of unexpected troubles. Since it is fairly sure that people will meet problems they had not expected, this effect may make the price of anti-anxiety drugs too high.

(30)

A.They help to cure anxiety.

B.They help patients to gain insight into the cause of anxiety.

C.They help to control anxiety.

D.They help patients to work efficiently.

听力原文: The fiddler crab is a living clock. It indicates the time of the day by the color of its skin, which is dark by day and pale by night. The crab's changing skin color follows a regular twenty-four hour cycle that exactly matches the daily rhythm of the sun.

Does the crab actually keep time, or does its skin simply respond to the sun's rays, changing color according to the amount of light that strikes it? To find out, biologists kept crabs in a dark room for two months. Even without daylight the crab's skin color continued to change precisely on schedule.

The characteristic probably evolved in response to the rhythm of the sun, to help protect the crab from sunlight and enemies. After millions of years it has become completely regulated inside the living body of the crab.

The biologists noticed that once each day the color of the fiddle crab is especially dark, and that each day this occurs fifty minutes later than on the day before. From this they discovered that each crab follows not only the rhythm of the sun but also that of the tides. The crab's period of greatest darkening is precisely the time of low tide on the beach where it was caught.

(30)

A.Why they change color.

B.Whether they change color.

C.How to use them as clocks.

D.Where they can be caught.

听力原文: The results of the municipal elections in Italy in which the governing coalition lost ground to parties on the left and right attracted considerable attention in today's British newspapers. It's the lead story for the Financial Times, which focuses on the sharp falls on the Milan stock exchange and says the nervousness in the financial markets reflected the view that fresh general elections would be held early next year amid increased political uncertainty.

The Scotsman says file results reflect the bewilderment of a people who are watching file abrupt disintegration of the country's post-war political and economic fabric. The Yorkshire Post says the results raise the perennial question of whether Italy is governable. And The Independent adds that there's little prospect of a convincing new party of the moderate centre right emerging in time for the elections to fill the political vacuum left by the discredited Christian democrats and socialists.

(33)

A.It won the elections easily.

B.It lost the elections completely.

C.It attracted considerable attention in newspapers.

D.It didn't cause the falls on the stock exchange.
