This literal-mindedness has stuck with me; one result of it is that I am unable to believe in God. Most of the other atheists I know seem to feel freed or proud of their unbelief, as if they have cleverly refused to be sold snake oil. My husband, who was reared in a devout Catholic family, has served as an altar boy. So other than baptizing our son to reassure our families, we've skated over the issue of faith.
Some people believe faith is a gift; it's a choice, a matter of spiritual discipline. I have a friend who was reared to believe, and he does. But his faith has wavered. He has struggled to hang onto it and to pass it along to his children. Another friend of mine never goes to church because she's a single mother who doesn't have the gas money. But she once told me a day when she was washing oranges as the sun streamed onto them. As she peeled one, the smell rose to her face, and she felt she received the Holy Spirit. "He sank into my bones," she recounted. "I lifted my palms upward, feeling filled with love."
Being no theologian, and not even a believer, I am not in a position to offer up theories, but mine is this: people who receive faith directly, as a spontaneous combustion of the soul, have fewer questions. They have been sparked with a faith that is more unshakable than that of those who have been taught.

歌曲欣赏,指出所包含的状语从句,并说出从句的类型 When I was young I'd listen to the radio Waiting for my favorite songs When they played I'd sing alone, It make me smile. Those were such happy times and not so long ago How I wondered where they'd gone. But they're back again just like a long lost friend All the songs I love so well. Every shalalala every wo'wo still shines. Every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they're starting to sing so fine When they get to the part where he's breaking her heart It can really make me cry just like before. It's yesterday once more. (Shoobie do lang lang) Looking back on how it was in years gone by And the good times that I had makes today seem rather sad, So much has changed. It was songs of love that I would sing to them And I'd memorise each word. Those old melodies still sound so good to me As they melt the years away Every shalalala every wo'wo still shines Every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they're starting to sing so fine All my best memorise come back clearly to me Some can even make me cry just like before. It's yesterday once more. (Shoobie do lang lang) Every shalalala every wo'wo still shines. Every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they're starting to sing so fine Every shalalala every wo'wo still shines. Every shing-a-ling-a-ling that they're starting to sing so fine.

Man: Hello Anna, this is Julian Russell from Family Holidays. I wondered if you could do some catering for us next week. We're having a small reception - it's to launch a new advertising campaign. Would you be free?
Woman: When exactly is it, Mr Russell?
Man: Next Thursday - that's May the second.
Woman: Oh yes, I can do that. Where will you be holding it?
Man: We thought we'd have it at Head Office and use the Boardroom because there's enough room for everyone there.
Woman: OK. What sort of things would you like?
Man: Just a light lunch, I think, so that people can eat while they move around and talk to each other. You did something similar for us last year - we'd be happy to have the same menu again.
Woman: Right, I'll look in my diary and see what you had. Oh, I nearly forgot to ask you, how many should I cater for?
Man: Well, I think most people will be able to come. Perhaps around 25. No, let's say 30 to be sure.
Woman: Right. Thank you for getting in much, Mr Russell, I'll send you confirmation of the arrangements by the end of the week and then I'll...
