When concerned parents protest the excessive sex or violence on television, they often see

k control of television from some outside agency. Our research, however, suggests that the most effective control of TV' s influence on children can be exerted from within the home.

We have found that there is major obstacle that parents need to overcome in connection with TV viewing. Surprisingly enough, we are going to advocate that parents act rudely—at least as fat' as the TV set is concerned. Most of us have been socialized all our lives with the warning "Don' t interrupt when someone else is speaking." Yet our ancestors never imagined a mechanical visitor sitting in the middle of our home who talks without stop and never allows the listener an opportunity to put a word in edgewise.

During our research, we found upon questioning parents that they usually reacted to TV content they disliked or disagreed with by remaining silent. This brings to mind an old saying that parents might well be advised to consider, "Silence gives consent."

We advocate loud reactions and exclamations of disapproval when something is presented on TV which is in opposition to the family' s values or offends them in any way. Similarly, when a program is in accordance with the family' s views, parents should approve of its content and applaud loudly. There is much that Shakespearean audiences of old could teach us in regard to such spontaneous, public reactions. Silence is misleading to our children.

This process of direct intervention vocal approval or disapproval of TV content—is highly effective with young children, because they ant curious, lemming rapidly and ready to place a great deal of confidence in the information and attitudes of their parents and other significant adults, such as teachers. For teenagers indirect intervention is recommended, because this group is more resistant to adult statements and does not like to be "Iectured." Indirect intervention is the practice of making comments about TV to other members of the family, but in such a way that teenager is sure to overhear the comments.

Our research shows that through such parental comments of approval or disapproval, adults can dramatically influence the information their children receive and retain from watching TV.

We may infer from the first paragraph that parents______.

A.find that their children like to watch those sex or violence TV programs

B.hope that school or society can do something to control bad TV programs

C.feel that they can exert some influences on their children at home only

D.realize that there is a generation gap between them and their children

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the following passage.

When you take a pill, you and your doctor hope it will work —and that helps it work. That’s not a new idea. But now researchers say they know just how much of a drug’s effect comes from the patient’s expectation: at least half.

When patients in the midst of a headache attack took a dummy (假的) pill which they thought of as a widely used headache drug, it reduced their pain. It worked almost as much as when they took the real drug thinking it was a placebo (安慰剂).

“There was no difference between the real drug and the placebo dressed up with a nice word in reducing pain,”researcher Ted Kaptchuk says. “Basically we show that words can actually double the effect of a drug. That’s pretty impressive.”

And if it works when treating headaches, it also might work for a wide variety of other illnesses. The findings have interesting implications for doctors and patients, because what doctors say about a medicine appears to have a lot to do with its benefits. Beyond that, it raises a question of whether drug companies should take subjects’expectations into account when they test a new drug.

The study is the latest in a series that’s helping to work out the mysteries of the placebo effect. Before the study, the group has already shown that placebos can have the effect of active medicine in patients with asthma (哮喘), and that even when patients know they’re taking a placebo, they can get relief from the pain.

32. According to the first two paragraphs, what’s new of the research is that _____.

A.half of the drug’s effect, if not more, is from the patients’expectations

B.dummy pills could be thought of as a widely used headache drug

C.your and your doctor’s hope helps the drug work

D.placebos work better than real drugs

Placebos can have the effect of active medicine in reducing pains when doctors _____.A.conduct tests on the effect of new drugs

B.take the patient’s expectations into account

C.tell patients that placebos are mysterious

D.describe the placebos’good effect to patients

It has been proved that placebos have the effect of active medicine in treating asthma _____.A.before Ted’s research

B.after Ted’s research

C.during the process of the Ted’s research

D.upon the completion of Ted’s research

According to the passage, the findings have interesting implications in that _____.A.what doctors say about a medicine seems much related to its benefits

B.the researchers have worked out all the mysteries of the placebo effect

C.drug companies should believe the subjects in drug test

D.placebos might help in treating all illnesses

The mental health movement in the United States began with a period of considerable enlightenment. Dorothea Dix was shocked to find the mentally iii in jails and almshouses and crusaded for the establishment of asylums in which people could receive humane care in hospital-like environments and treatment, which might help restore them to sanity. By the mid-1800s, 20 states had established asylums, but during the late 1800s and early 1900s, in the face of economic depression, legislatures were unable to appropriate sufficient funds for decent care. Asylums became overcrowded and prisonlike. Additionally, patients were more resistant to treatment than the pioneers in the mental health field had anticipated, and security and restraint were needed to protect patients and others. Mental institutions became frightening and depressing places in which the rights of patients were all but forgotten.

These conditions continued until after Word War Ⅱ. At that time, new treatments were discovered for some major mental illnesses therefore considered untreatable (penicillin for syphilis of the brain and insulin treatment for schizophrenia and depressions), and a succession of books, motion pictures, and newspaper exposes called attention to the plight of the mentally ill. Improvements were made, and Dr. David Vail's. Humane practices program is a beacon for today. But changes were slow in coming until the early 1960s. At that time, the Civil Rights Movement led lawyers to investigate America's prisons, which were disproportionately populated by blacks, and they in turn followed prisoners into the only institutions that were worse than the prisons——the hospitals for the criminally insane. The prisons were rifled with angry young men who, encouraged by legal support, were quick to demand their fights. The hospitals for the criminally insane, by contrast, were populated with people who were considered "crazy" and who were often kept obediently in their place through the use of severe bodily restraints and large doses of major tranquilizers. The young cadre of public interest lawyers liked their role in the mental hospitals. The lawyers found a population that was both passive and easy to champion. These were, after all, people who, unlike criminals, had done nothing wrong. And in many states they were being kept in horrendous institutions, an injustice which, once exposed was bound to shock the public and, particularly, the judicial conscience.

Judicial interventions have had some definite positive effects, but there is growing awareness that courts cannot provide the standards and the review mechanisms that assure good patient care. The details of providing day-to-day care simple cannot be mandated by a court so it is time to take from the courts the responsibility for delivery of mental health care and assurance of patient fights and return it to the state mental health administrators to whom the mandate was originally given. Though it is a difficult task, administrators must undertake to write roles and standards and to provide the training and surveillance to assure that treatment is given and patients' rights are respected.

The main purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.discuss the influence of Dorothea Dix on the mental health movement

B.shock the reader with vivid descriptions of asylums

C.increase public awareness of the plight of the mentally ill

D.provide a historical perspective on problems of mental health care
