听力原文: Different cultures have considerably differing habits in the amount of expressiv

eness. This is rooted in the varying attitudes toward people of different ages, classes, and stations in life. In the family setting, for instance, most Americans encourage their children to enter freely into dinner table conversation and other family discussions and to participate early in decision making. By contrast, in Asia and elsewhere, children are taught to be silent in the presence of elders and, for instance, are usually separated from them when eating. The children certainly are never to disagree verbally with the parent, or with older brothers and sisters, for that matter. In parts of India, even an adult would not enter into the decision-making discussions if his aged parents were still in the family circle. It is not surprising, therefore, that many foreigners look upon American young people as brash, immodest, and rude, possessing no proper respect for parents or older siblings. On the other hand, Americans may look upon young people of other cultures as being too reticent, too quiet, too unresponsive, too lacking in self-confidence, which may be interpreted erroneously as inferiority.

In many countries a student would very seldom ask a question in class, for to do so would not only suggest that he is uninformed but that he is implying that the teacher has been unclear, which would be highly disrespectful. In America most teachers encourage the student to ask all kinds of questions. It is a mark of good teacher to draw out questions and a mark of a good student to ask numerous, meaningful questions. American teachers abroad thus have to realize the lack of questions or lack of recitation from their students does not mean that the teacher is being ineffective and the students are ignorant and lethargic, for they are merely being respectful.

Which continent where children are taught to be silent in front of elders is mentioned?

A.Europe.

B.North American.

C.Asia.

D.South American.

听力原文: Let' s proceed to the main exhibition hall and look at some of the actual vehicles that played a prominent role in speeding up mail delivery. Consider how long it used to take to send a letter across a relatively short distance. Back in the 1600s, it took two weeks on horseback to get a letter from Boston to New York, a distance of about 260 miles. Crossing a river was also a challenge. Ferry services were so irregular that a carrier would sometimes have to wait hours just to catch a ferry. For journeys, inland there was always a stagecoach but the ride was by no means comfortable because it had to be shared with other passengers. The post office was pretty ingenious about some words. In the 19th century, in the southwestern desert, for instance, camels were brought in to help to get the mail through. In Alaska, reindeer were used. This practice was discontinued because of the disagreeable temper of these animals. We' ll stop here a minute so that you can enter this replica of a railway mail car. It was during the age of the iron horse that delivery really started to pick up. In fact, the United States transported most bulk mail by train for nearly 100 years. The first airmail service didn' t start until 1918. Please take a few moments to look around. I hope you' ll enjoy your tour. And as you continue on your own, may I suggest you visit our impressive philatelic collection? Not only can you look at some of the more unusual stamps issued but there' s an interesting exhibition on how stamps are made.

What is the talk mainly about?

A.Overland transportation in the nineteenth century.

B.Historical aspects of mail delivery.

C.Vehicles currently in use by the postal service.

D.The invention of railroad.

听力原文: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome. I' m sure we have all heard the expression, "Think Green". Tonight we are going to talk about ways that we can "Act Green in our everyday lives.

The best place to start, of course, is the home. Every day, people all over the world are hurting the environment without even knowing it. For example, busy families buy paper napkins and plastic food wrap at the supermarket. Tins helps them save time on housework, but after these things have been used, what happens to them? They go in the trash. In many places, especially in the North America, big cities are running out of places to throw their trash, what can we do about it?

How can we cut down on garbage? Well, we can start using cloth napkins and cloth towels instead of paper towels. When we go grocery shopping, we can choose products that are not "over-packaged". For example, last week I bought a package of cookies. The cookies were in a bag, there was a plastic tray inside the bag, and then each cookie was in its own little package on the tray in the bag! That' s over-packaging! We should also take our own bags to the grocery store to carry things home in.

Cleaning products are another danger. Dangerous cleaning products enter our water supply every day. Of course, everyone wants a clean house, so what' s the answer? For one thing, we could make our own cleaning solution from baking soda, lemon, and vinegar.

Now, what about in the community? At work and school, we use one very valuable item every day. Paper, of course, we need paper to do our work, but how much do we waste? Does your school or office recycle paper, learn to make notepads from unused sides of old pieces of paper. Perhaps the most important thing we do is to ask our schools to teach recycling to young children. We should teach them to be careful; we should teach them not to litter. We should also teach them by being good role models and recycling as much as we can every day! Finally, plant a tree. Better yet, plant two trees.

What' s the talk mainly about?

A.Green house effect.

B.Garbage treatment.

C.Environment protection.

D.Over-packaging problem.
