Text 2
Everyone of us lives and works on a small part of the earth's surface, moves in a small circle, and of these acquaintances knows only a few intimately. Of any public event that has wide effects we see at best only a phase and an aspect. This is true that the eminent insiders, who draft treaties, make laws, and issue orders, are like those who have treaties framed on them, laws promulgated to them, orders given at them. Inevitably our opinions cover a bigger space, a longer reach of time, many things, that we can directly observe. So they have to be pieced together out of what others have reported and what we can imagine. Yet even the eyewitness does not bring back a naive picture of the scene. For experience seems to show that he himself brings something to the scene which later he takes away from it, that oftener than not what he imagines to be the account of an event is really a transfiguration of it. Few facts in consciousness seem to be merely given. Most facts in consciousness seem to be partly made. A report is the joint product of the knower and known,in which the role of the observer is always selective and usually creative. The facts we see depend on where we are placed, and the habits of our eyes.

Should a university graduate with a computer science degree seek a position in a large, possibly multinational company or in a smaller organization?
Advice on this was divided, although the pros and cons (正反两方面的理由) are fairly clear. If you join a small company, you can get a clearer all-around picture of how business works and gain experience in many fields. If you join a large organization, you can benefit from its in-house training programs and form. experience gained by working on large projects.
Vigrom Chaisinthop is TN Information Systems managing director. He said that by joining a big organization, a graduate would get experience on projects working with teams of 50 to 60 people. This would provide good experience in learning how to do a big project.
However, if they were to join a smaller company, they would have more opportunity to explore more areas, possibly spanning both hardware and programming. This might allow a person to be more creative.
Compaq managing director Kongkiet Washington said he believed that it would be more beneficial to work for a smaller company. He said that graduates would like to see many aspects of a business and be able to understand "the big picture". He also suggested that a graduate should start with an established organization, so that he can learn about process and discipline for at least three to five years.
But whether big or small, TN's Vigrom noted that half of all graduates would not make their decision based on this question alone. Parents who tended to favor state enterprises from a job security standpoint also had a large say in the choice.
People have divided opinions about ______.
A.the benefits a big company provides to graduates
B.the advantages a small company offers to graduates
C.whether graduates should work for a large or a small company
D.whether graduates can gain different experience
Nowadays air pollution is something that we hardly question any more. However, I still can't walk down the streets in any of the big city without thinking that people are suffering from the air pollution. It is time for the government departments the world over to introduce emission controls on all cars and improve the public transport system to encourage people to leave their cars at home. A friend of mine takes flying lessons each morning and it really makes him sick when he climbs above the smog layer and looks down into it and thinks: "I'm breathing that!" This kind of pollution results from the bad management of resources. Waste things can, and should, be treated properly. House building, road construction and industrial development are all earthmoving operations and can change the balances of life created over millions of years. I would like to see serious studies done on all these main works before they are built. Also, there should be more national parks set up to keep the most beautiful parts of our countries in their natural states.
Why did the speaker want to open the window in the small restaurant?
A.Because he felt too hot inside.
B.Because he wanted to throw out something.
C.Because the restaurant was too smoky.
D.Because he wanted to greet his friend.
Michelangelo on Marriage
A priest, his friend, said to him: "It is a pity that you have not taken a wife, so that you might have had many children and left them all your honorable labours." And Michelangelo replied: "I have only too much of a wife in this art of mine, who has always kept me in tribulation, and my children shall be the works that I may leave, which, even if they are naught, will live a while."

Josef Albers (1888—1976)
Albers lived in America nearly half of his long life and taught a whole generation of American painters. Yet his work remained strongly European in its "relational" qualities and, even though he used a "centered image", the way he placed the bottom edges of the squares closer together created effects quite different from the symmetrical 1960s work of Stella and Judd. Albers applied his paint with a palette knife and deliberately left the edges rough, with a tooth for the interacting colours to bite on one another. He never used masking tape and his works are not hard edged (except in reproduction). The largest paintings are about three feet square; small by American standards. The values they affirm are not American values but European.

When Chekhov entered the Moscow University Medical School in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.
As a writer he was extremely fast, often producing a short story in an hour or less. Chekhov's medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference (冷漠) many of his characters show to tragic events. In 1892, he became a full time writer and published some of his most memorable stories.
Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of life in small towns of Russia. Tragic events controlled his characters who were filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.
It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov's stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters. Chekhov's works combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity (敏感) of an artist.
Some of Chekhov's works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s. One of his famous stories, The Man in a Shell (《装在套子里的人》), about a school teacher's extraordinarily orderly life, was selected as a text for Chinese senior students.

Robert Spring, a l9th century forger(伪造者) , did well in his job that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he made some money by selling his small but real collection of early US autographs(亲笔签名 ) . Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began to leam the signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and write them on the title pages of old books. To reduce the chance of being discovered, he sent his
works to England and Canada for sale.
Forgers have a difficult time selling their products. A forger can ' t go to a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don' t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways
to make their works look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title
page, and they treat paper and ink with chemicals.
After the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so, Spring invented a re-spectable lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General " Stone Wall" Jackson.
For several years Miss Fanny ' s money problems forced her to sell a great number of letters belong-ing to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring dying in poverty.
68. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada7
[A] There was a greater demand there than in America.
[ B ] There was less chance of being discovered there.
[ C] Britain was Spring ' s birthplace.
[ D] The prices were higher in England and Canada.
