阅读理解:In Britain, the old Road Traffic Act restricted speeds to 2 m.p.h.

In Britain, the old Road Traffic Act restricted speeds to 2 m.p.h. (miles per hour) in towns and 4 m.p.h. in the country. Later Parliament increased the speed limit to 14 m.p.h. But by 1903 the development of the car industry had made it necessary to raise the limit to 20 m.p.h. By 1930, however, the law was so widely ignored that speeding restrictions were done away with altogether. For five years motorists were free to drive at whatever speeds they likes. Then in 1935 the Road Traffic Act imposed a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in built-up areas, along with the introduction of driving tests and pedestrian crossing.

Speeding is now the most common motoring offence in Britain. Offences for speeding fall into three classes: exceeding the limit on a restricted road, exceeding on any road the

limit for the vehicle you are driving, and exceeding the 70 m.p.h. limit on any road. A restricted road is one where the street lamps are 200 yards apart, or more.

The main controversy (争论) surrounding speeding laws is the extent of their safety value. The Ministry of Transport maintains that speed limits reduce accidents. It claims that when the 30 m.p.h. limit was introduced in 1935 there was a fall of 15 percent in fatal accidents. Likewise, when the 40 m.p.h. speed limit was imposed on a number of roads in London in the late fifties, there was a 28 percent reduction in serious accidents. There were also fewer casualties (伤亡) in the year after the 70 m.p.h. motorway limit was imposed in 1966.

In America, however, it is thought that the reduced accident figures are due rather to the increase in traffic density. This is why it has even been suggested that the present speed limits should be done away with completely, or that a guide should be given to inexperienced drivers and the speed limits made advisory, as is done in parts of the USA.

第三节 短文理解2

阅读下列短文,从[A]、[B]、[C]三个选项中选择一个正确答案。

Food in Britain has had a bad name abroad for a very long time. Visitors from foreign countries complain(抱怨) about the meals that they order in restaurants. The British themselves do not like to complain so the meals in restaurants are not always good.

But in a city like London there are many different kinds of food. There are so many restaurants serving foreign dishes that it can be difficult to find one serving only British food. The people who came from other countries have brought their own cooking to Britain so there are restaurants serving different kinds of foreign food.

Foreigners also complain about uninteresting meals served at home for the family. Though there are so many complaints about uninteresting food, there seems to be a great interest in cooking among people in Britain. Cooking books sell very well. Newspapers and magazines often offer(提供) unusual recipes from foreign countries as well as old recipes from the past and from many different places of Britain. These places of Britain offer some very good dishes. So there must be a lot of British people who live to eat, not eat to live.

If the British like to complain, the meals in restaurants may ______.

A.cost less

B.become better

C.be served a longer time

Text 1

It's 8:00 am. James Butters gives 18-month-old Thomas his milk, then breakfast. After get-ting Thomas into his outdoor clothes, they head for the park to watch birds and play on the grass. With lunchtime drawing near, they're back home for an aftemoon of drawing, playing with cars, maybe watching some children's programs.

James isn't Thomas' dad. He is a nanny(保姆)-a man nanny, obviously, interestingly

termed a " manny" -specially trained and in his third.nannying position. At 27 , he cares for Thom-

as, and another boy of a similar age. "It's much freer than an office job, " he says, " and you'regetting to see children develop and grow. You become very close to them, for sure. I don't think'm special or better than a woman nanny; everyone has their own method. But I'm unusual.Friends laughed when I started studying nursery nursing. In my class, I was the only man among 70 women. Somehow , I made it, " he said.

Although it's not yet common to find men in traditional(传统的) nannying courses, thingsare changing. In the United States, parents are employing young mannies, sometimes to care forbabies, but more often as active role modelsto get junior away from the TV and the computer. From rollerblading (轮滑) friends to summer swimming mannies, these are the big brothers whoare always willing to play, largely because they're paid for it.

It is catching on here in Britain, too. Earlier this year, Norland nanny college welcomed its firstfull-time man student, 19-year-old Peter Cummins in Wales. While some families find it difficult to accept the idea of a young man in a traditional nannying role , man nannies are increasingly popular.

56. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

[A] Changes in Tradition

[B]A New Job for Men

[C] Mannies and Women Nannies

[D]Baby Boys and Their Mannies

阅读材料,回答题。

No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 155 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or LeMonde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or cite news.

Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the "sensational", which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give in-formation, for they have to compete with television.

Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.

As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.

Doctors often work together in groups, and the name of the place where they work is a Doctor's Surgery. The government pays for this system, and it is free to go to see your doctor.

If the doctor decides that you need treatment he can prescribe medicine. For example he can prescribe antibiotics for an infection. Medicine can be tablets to take with water or liquid to drink. The doctor writes the prescription. You take the prescription to the chemist's, and the chemist will make up the medicine for you.
