We concluded that persons with fixed incomes, for example, the elderly who depend upon pensions, and persons with slow-rising incomes as, for example, an employee with a salary agreed to in a long-term contract, will be most seriously affected by inflation. Please remember that while their dollar incomes, stay the same, the cost of goods and services rises, and in effect, real income decreases, that is, they are able to purchase less with the same amount of money.
We also talked about the fact that stockholders and persons with business interests and investments would probably benefit most from inflation, since high prices would increase sales receipts, and profits would likely rise faster than the cost of living.
And now, before we begin today's lecture, are there any questions about the term, inflation or any of the examples given in our discussion so far?

W: Yes, I feel myself quite at home now. I haven't got used to the food yet but I'm enjoying the life on campus.
M: Good. Now we'd better make sure you enjoy your studies. We offer a very wide range of options on the foundation course, as you know, but you can only take six courses. Do you know what you want to do yet?
W: Yes, more or less; but I'm not sure whether to do biological sciences or German.
M: Well, that's quite a difference. Let's see... you've selected to do: physical sciences, basic electronics, art and design, CAD... that's computer aided design and English.
W: Yes, five courses.
M: That's quite a range. Don't you want to do maths or computer program-lining, for example?
W: Well, I'm interested in electronics in computers especially in writing computer games. I'd like to produce educational software, educational games, eventually. I've taught myself a lot of programming and I was good at maths. I don't think I need either of them.
M: Then, why did you choose to do art and design?
W: Well, that will be good for my graphics. I need that to produce games...CAD, too. I've never done computer aided design before.
M: No...right...they've got some powerful packages in the computer graphics and CAD offices...you'll enjoy that. So...that leaves English. It's mostly English literature. I know your English is all right. But as a first year student, you'll have to take the Cambridge Proficiency Test.
W: All right.

听力原文: I want to talk today about some studies. They seem to indicate that there is a startling world-wide decline in the number of amphibians, such as frogs, toads and salamanders. There's little doubt that one reason why the number of amphibians is declining is their habitats have been destroyed when the developers fill in ponds and marshes to build houses. Amphibians can't just move somewhere. They need water to lay their eggs in. Another problem is the growing fish industry. Another range of popular pool fish such as carp have been introduced to many lakes and ponds all over the world. Raising and selling these fish can be profitable, but the fish eat the eggs and offspring of amphibians that were already living in the lakes and ponds. Other factors could be contributing to the decline include acid rain and the spread of pesticide residues. Many pesticides that farmers added to their crops are eventually washed away by the rain and end up in ponds and other bodies of water where amphibians live. Amphibians are especially vulnerable to pesticides dissolved in the water because of their moist skins. Water can pass through amphibians allowing toxins dissolved in the water to enter the amphibians' body.
What does the speaker mainly discuss?
A.The distribution of different species of amphibians.
B.Possible reasons for reduction in the number of amphibians.
C.The effects of environmental change on the fish industry.
D.Guidelines for the responsible use of pesticides.
