听力原文: Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and the number of such masons is small. Pruning involves the cut ting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.
First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree heavier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. Removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air may en courage the health of a tree.
One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is essential to make the area, which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done ih winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.
Why should pruning be done?
A.To make the tree grow taller.
B.To improve the shape of the tree.
C.To get rid of the small branches.
D.To make the small branches thicker.
Once there lived man who owned a very remarkable (奇物的) goose. It was a goose which could lay golden eggs. Every day when the man went into the barnyard (谷仓边场地) he would find a beautiful golden egg. The trouble was that the goose would lay only one egg each day.
One day a neighbor spoke to the man who owned the wonderful goose. "Why do not you cut the goose open and get all the gold that is inside the goose? Then you would be a rich man and you would be the envy(羡慕的对象) of all your neighbors. "
The man thought this might be a good idea; so he cut the goose open. He killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. What do you suppose he found? He found just what you would find in any ordinary goose if you should cut one open.
Now there are no more golden eggs. The man was not satisfied with what he had; so now he has nothing.

Here are twelve ways to save money in college.
■ Make your own lunch.
■ Shop around. Don't buy the first item(商品) you see.
■ Learn when to say no. Ask yourself whether you really have the money for what you're thinking about buying.
■ Give service instead of spending. For example, agree to watch a friend's children for a few hours in exchange for a good meal.
■ Cut down the number of shopping trips you make.
■ Borrow clothes from friends and relatives(亲戚).
■ Have other students cut your hair.
■ Check newspapers for lower prices on lunches or dinners.
■ Use your college's library services. Read their books and newspapers instead of buying them, for example.
■ Ask other students about the least expensive supermarkets, restaurants, and so on.
■ Ask yourself whether you're buying because you need something or just because other students are buying.
■ Be ready to change your attitude (态度) when necessary. For example, some people think that the most expensive item is the best item, but you don't always get what you pay for.

I felt proud and excited because my father thought I was responsible enough to help him in his business. Actually, that first day was very hard. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I cut and cut very large yards in well-to-do part of the city. By the end of the day I was exhaust- ed, but I felt good. I put out a hard day's labor and earned six dollars. One day, my father spotted some weeds I had missed cutting and pulled me inside. "Chat that section again!' he said firmly "and don' t make me have to tell you again." The message was very dear. Today I stress the importance of doing the job right the first time. Every job I have held from cutting lawns to washing dishes to working a machine on the construction site, I have learned something that help me in my next job. If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.
