听力原文: How many of you drink cola? Nearly everyone. Did you know that cola started out not as a soft drink but as a cure for headaches back in the late 1800's? john S Pemberton, a druggist from Atlanta, had experimented for many months trying to find a cure for the common headache. He worked in his backyard, mixing and heating different combinations of oils and flavors until he found one that seemed promising. Pemberton bottled the mixture and began selling it in drug stores as concentrated syrup that the customer had to mix with water before drinking. Cola's transformation from medicinal syrup to a carbonated soft drink came about quite by accident. One day, a customer came into a drugstore complaining of a headache and asked for a bottle of cola syrup. He wanted to take it right away. So he asked the clerk to mix the medicine while he waited. The clerk, instead of walking to the other end of the counter to get plain water, suggested mixing the syrup with soda water. The customer agreed, and after drinking it, remarked how good it tasted. The clerk continued offering the mix and carbonated cola grew in popularity. Today carbonated colas are sold in most countries around the world. And although they no longer contain the ingredients used to cure headache, they are still very refreshing.

听力原文: What are zebra stripes on the tomato soup cans and potato chip bags? They are sp
ecial black and white vertical lines. These black and white stripes can be read by an optical scanner, or computer. The "scanner", which reads the lines of code, is a small laser beam of light. When the light ray is broken by the black stripes, the computer reads the information about the product.

The code is called the Universal Product Code (UPC). It is designed to add speed and efficiency to stores by using computers. It can do this in several ways. First, it is not necessary for workers to put individual prices on items. Errors in prices are eliminated, or done away with. Also, the time spent checking out is reduced. UPC gives an itemized receipt to the customer with all the items, prices, and totals. The store clerk does not need to spend time checking the price on the item and punching it into cash register. This UPC computerized system will probably save as much as 45 percent of the checkout clerk's time.

What do the stripes mean? How does the computer interpret the stripes? The number printed below the vertical bars identifies the manufacturer and the manufacturer's item. As many as 10 trillion individual machinereadable numbers can be used with this system.

Codes are scanned by ______.

A.the checkout clerk

B.the customers themselves.

C.a laser beam of light.

D.the cash register.

听力原文: In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are
fast and do not make mistakes. Many banks put advertisements in the newspaper showing that their business deals are "untouched by human hands" and therefore safe from human temptation. Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal. Computer criminals don't use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witnesses and often no evidences. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. One clerk at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half million dollars in just four years. No one noticed this because he moved money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the clerk claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else's account. This clerk was caught only because he was gambling. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was put in the records. Most computer criminals have been minor employees. But police wonder if this is true. As one official say, "I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is all so poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are doing--the ones who really know how a computer works."

(30)

A.Computers are fast.

B.Computers do not often provide evidences or witnesses.

C.Computers can replace paperwork.

D.Computers are safe from human temptation.

Every town in America may have a post office. Some are very small, and you may also find t
hem in the corner of a shop. Others are large buildings. They are open five days a week and Saturday mornings. From Monday through Friday they are usually open from 8: 30 to 4: 30.

If you know how much the postage for your letter, you can buy stamps from machines. Stamps are sold at many different prices, from one cent to many dollars. If you are not sure how much postage is for your letters, you can ask the clerk(职员). He or she will give you the stamps you need.

If you are sending your letters far away, write on the envelope that you want them to go by air or use an air-mail envelope. Remember that postage will be more expensive for a letter you want to send overseas.
