The thing is, I've now got an urgent appointment at the office, so I'll have to leave early - I've tried moving the meeting to another day, but that just isn't possible. It's a shame, because this is the first time I've been able to come.

Do you often feel the quality of the goods we buy these days isn't as good as it ought to
be?

In the past, when things were made by hand, it seems there was a lot of pride in individual workmanship. People were really proud of things they made.

But now, of course, individuals don't make things. Most things are made on assembly lines and one person only has a very small part in putting something together so there isn't any workmanship any more.

A good example of this is a friend of mine, Mary. She bought a toaster last summer at a sale. She used it, I guess, pretty often, but she only had it a couple of months when suddenly the plastic base of the toaster cracked wide open, and at the same time the heating system in the toaster burned out.

She took it back to the store, but the clerk in the store said they wouldn't take it back, and they wouldn't give her money back, because she bought it on sale. So the only thing she could do was to buy a new one.

I'm sure Mary is more careful when she buys things now, and that's what we all have to be.

It can be learned from the passage that ______.

A.workmanship now can not be found as it was in the past

B.the toaster was broken because Mary used it too much

C.the quality of goods now isn't as good as it was

D.it is fair enough for the store not to give money back to Mary

Reading Comprehension(阅读理解) Passage 2 A friend...

Reading Comprehension(阅读理解) Passage 2 A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse. That is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 根据短文完成1-5题,在空格处填写正确选项的字母。 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very badly B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above

听力原文: [29] A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent thing to say to good people.

Something has gone wrong with our once-proud American way of life. A key ingredient is disappearing: responsibility, which means that every person is responsible for his actions. Without it, there can be no respect, no law, and ultimately, no society. My job as a police officer is to impose responsibility on people who refuse to impose it on themselves. [30] But as every policeman knows, controls on people's behavior. are far less effective than internal restrictions such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. Yet gradually, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restrictions are loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your properly his property; he takes what he wants, including your life.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by the school that didn't teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home. I don't believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal from responsibility, we become a society of endless excuses. [31] We desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

(30)

A.Because good men are not as smart as the police.

B.Because good people have no sense of guilt.

C.Because good people have hardly done anything to prevent crimes.

D.Because good people commit more criminal activities recently.

W: Um, let's see. No, they want someone young with ambition and enthusiasm. Oh yes, they want graduates, so that's OK. You've been to university. Now what else? Let's see.

M: There must be some trick.

W: No, the only thing is that you have to travel, but then the company takes care of that. Oh, and you have to be able to get well with other people. It says that you have to be good in a team.

听力原文:M: Good morning. Can I help you?

W: Hello. My name's John Bush and I'm intending to go to a conference in Sydney for three weeks.

M: I see. Do you want the excursion fare or the full return fare?

W: Now, can I get a stopover on an excursion fare?

M: Yes, you're allowed only one stopover on the excursion fare.

W: Oh, I see, only one.

M: Yes. But of course, if you pay the full return fare then you can have unlimited stopovers.

M: Well, lots of places. There's Singapore, Kuwait, Athens, you've really got quite a lot of choices you know.

M: Oh dear. Um. . .

W: And I'm hoping that I can persuade my two friends, who are going to the conference, to stop over with me on the way back.

M: Yes, that would be a good idea.

W: By the way, one of them is in Cairo at the moment. Would it be possible for me to stop over there on my way to Sydney?

M: Yes, of course. There are lots of flights to Cairo and, then plenty more onwards from Cairo to Sydney. And then you can stay for as long as you like.

W: Oh, that's great! Now, the thing is, I think I'd better go and persuade Mr. Adams that, you know, he'd like to stop with me in Cairo. . .

The idea of test-tube babies may make you starry-eyed with delight at the wonders of moder
n medicine or bleary-eyed with considering the moral/legal implications of starting life in a laboratory. But if you've ever been pregnant(怀孕)yourself, one thing is certain: You wonder what it's like to carry a test-tube baby. Are these pregnancies normal? Are the babies normal?

The earliest answers come from Australia, where a group of medical experts at the Queen Victoria Medical Center in Melbourne have taken a look at the continent's first nine seemed to proceed according to plan, but at birth some unusual trends did show up. Seven of the nine babies turned out to be girls. Six of the nine were delivered by Caesarean section(剖腹产术). And one baby, a twin, was born with a serious heart defect and a few days later developed life-threatening abdominal problems.

What does it all mean? Even the doctors don't know for sure, because the numbers are so small. The proportion of girls to boys is high, but until there are many more test-tube babies no one will know whether that's pure coincidence(巧合)or something special. The same thing is true of the single heart defect; it usually shows up in only 15 out of 60,000 births in that part of Australia, but the fact that it occurred in one out of nine test-tube babies does not necessarily mean that they are at special risk. One thing the doctors can explain is the high number of Caesareans.

The Australian researchers report that they are quite encouraged. All the babies are now making nomal progress--even the twin with the birth defects.

The passage imples that the first test-tube babies were born in______.

A.Canada

B.Britain

C.America

D.Australia

e to just relax enough so that I can sleep properly during the night and that ... then I get out of that cycle of not sleeping, and you know, not eating properly. That seems to help a little bit with me.

M: Well, not sleeping is the first thing that happens to me if I'm under stress. And ifs only quite recently that I've realized that the best thing to do is not try to sleep. Urn, what I tend to do now is I get up and get a cup of tea, camomile tea rather than tea with caffeine or tannin in it. And I put on a video of something that's fairly lightweight and I will sit But it's the same with all stress, really, you have to, as you say, accept that you are stressed and try and breathe deeply and be sensible. There's no point in worrying be cause it's not going to change anything and you have to try and think that way. It's easy to say that, it's easy to give advice, it's more difficult to actually do it. But I think I'm getting better at it.

W: One of the things that when you are stressful is you start breathing very shallow. You're not taking oxygen down into your body, panicking, you tighten up and you're taking little shallow breaths.

M: Heavy breathing.., and deeper breaths. I think that's my sort of solution to my stress.

What is the conversation focused on?

A.The best way to do yoga.

B.The best way to cope with stress.

C.The best way to eat properly.

D.The ways to get to steep.
