First of all, show up late so that you can interrupt the beginning of the instructor’s presentation. 4. After the instructor calls on someone else, get up loudly from your seat, walk to the front of the classroom, and demand to be excused for an emergency visit to the washroom. 5. Ten minutes before dismissal time, start noisily packing up your books and papers. 9. You should then say, in a loud voice, “I DON’T KNOW.” 10. Q6: P8. Republic’s supporters are equally polite and firm. “I think we need the best democracy we can get,” said Jen Gingell, a banker. “We can do a lot better than having a monarch.” P9. Don’t you think symbolism is important? I asked historian Emily Robinson. “Yes I do. But I think maybe there are the wrong kind of symbols. The murky power of the monarchy makes the executive more powerful than it would otherwise be.” Journalist Adam Barnett said he believed in symbolism too: “But it must be reason-based, and not based on tradition and superstition.” P10. These people are youngish: none of them struck me as extremist or crazed – all were very rational. Perhaps to a fault. The world is not organised along rational lines. P 11. 听力原文:M: So, Juliet you.., you have a very powerful voice, with a wonderful range from
high to low... does it take a lot of looking after?

W: Urn... not more so than anybody else, I don't think.., urn, but err, I'm very lazy, I'm sure I'm doing a lot of things wrong.., urn, but err, so far so good. I do look after it in the fact that I try not to get very tired, or wear myself out, because not just, you know talking does as much damage, and laughing the wrong way, as singing does...

M: Is that so? I didn't realize that...

W: Yeah... Some people talk... If you talk like this, you put a lot of strain on the back of cords there, urn, that does a lot of damage to your voice over a number of years, so you try and, I try and talk the way I'm talking now, not very fast, not very high-pitched, and without much pressure on my voice.

M: When you're singing, your voice sounds wonderfully relaxed, but that's not the idea that most people would have of the music business as a whole. Is the, is the life-style. very stressful?

W: Yes, as a matter of fact, it's very demanding, urn, it's probably like a, an executive job, urn, here you can't come home at a certain nine-to-five, you can't spend a lot of your time with people around you, you feel detached because you know, it's like, I, I... I don't necessarily have a schedule, I might work on weekends, um, but... I don't actually mind, but it's like your family, your boyfriend, or your husband, or whatever, they can't get to see you, it's like last night, I, err it's like I was supposed to be going out to have dinner with old friends, you know with some friends, and, I ended, I was at a studio, and I said, oh I should be finished around seven, and of course eleven o'clock came, and I was still at the studio, and everybody was raving mad, and I got there only to find that everybody was getting ready to leave the restaurant... Things like that do happen, you know you can't, you.., you're not tied to that, and because of that sometimes you feel you can't do things that other people, nine-to-five, can do. You might have a day off on a Tuesday, and all your nine-to-five friends have got to get up to go to work, so they don't necessarily want to go out on the town or to the countryside or to the beach, the way you might want to on a Saturday, and so you find that you, you change, and you hang around with more people in the business, because their schedules all fit yours...

M: You mean it is your music career that determines the pattern of your social life?

W: Yes, I mean you can have more of a social life within the business. It's not that you just want to hang out with the famous people, it's just that they're the ones that are available...

听力原文:W: Hi, Stan, where have you been?

M: Oh, just at the Student Union office trying to see if I can catch you there. I also tried to find out if professor Steinfield has any old exams from years ago.

W: Why don't you just ask me? I took that class last semester and aced it.

M: Yeah... you ace all your subjects. But the exams change from year to year, don't they?

W: True, but the style. is pretty much the same from year to year.

M: So tell me about the process of prostaglandin. I can barely even pronounce it, let alone explain it.

W: Hey, I am no expert but what she'll be mainly looking for is that you know how it affects the digestion, reproduction, and immune systems.

M: What kind of question might she ask?

W: Well, for example, you'll probably have to say how prostaglandin, if over-produced, can give you headaches and fevers and stuff.

M: Talk about headaches. I think I 'm getting one now. Can you give me an aspirin? Well, I am sure it's this Biology class that's doing it.

W: Hey, I've heard you are no slouch at poetry. You get me through my course in 19th century poetry and I'll make you an expert in Biology.

M: It's a deal. Where shall we begin? Poetry is up my alley.

听力原文:W: Why are you packing all these old bottles and newspapers together? Will you se
ll them?

M: Of course not. I'm just going over to the recycling center this afternoon. Sometimes volunteers come by these apartments and collect waste paper. Sometimes I take the old bottles and papers there myself.

W: How do people deal with these old things?

M: Manufacturers use waste paper for things like paper bags, towels, napkins and boxes.

W: My god! Am I wiping my mouth on the towels from the dustbin?

M: You can't say so. Used material must be treated carefully and scientifically before reusing. For instance, an old newspaper can be recycled by de-inking and pulping.

W: Does the recycled paper look the same as the paper made from virgin wood pulp?

M: Well, inevitably, owing to its dingy color, art books and high quality magazine paper wouldn't use recycled paper. However, I suppose it's suitable for things like greeting cards, calendars and writing paper. After all, who cares about the drab color if waste paper can help to preserve forests?

W: Yes, forests may be one of the most valuable natural resources in the world. Regretfully, some people in my country haven't realized the importance of the environment protection.

M: In America, a few years ago people were really enthusiastic about reusing waste paper. But with the decreasing demand recently, interest has been waning. I think the government should do something to make people resume their enthusiasm in recycled paper.

W: Absolutely right. In addition, manufacturers need to find new commercial uses for recycled paper. Perhaps we can read comic books made from it just like in Japan.

Questions:

11. Where is the man going this afternoon?

12.What product is NOT made from recycled paper, according to the conversation?

13.What major benefit can we get from recycling waste paper?

14.According to the man, what is the disadvantage of recycled paper?

15.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

(31)

A.To the recycling center.

B.On a bicycle trip.

C.To the newspaper stand.

D.To a shopping center.

听力原文:W: And what about you, John? Any thoughts on next year?

M: Not really. It looks like unemployment, though. I'm getting rather depressed about it.

W: Well, don't give up on other things yet. It might be better for you to stay on at school, you know. I know the job market is very difficult at the moment. If you stay on at school, you could built up some extra qualifications which may help you later. You know, when the job market is very difficult, it's always useful to have those extra qualifications. You could always repeat subjects where you've got a low grade. Or you might find some other subjects which interest you.

M: Couldn't I go to an adult education college?

W: Umm. That's also a possibility. The range of the subjects there is much wider than at school. You might find more things there to interest you. On the other hand it's a completely new start--you know, getting to know teacher and their methods, making new friends and so on. It could be better or it could be worse! It depends very much on how you feel...

M: Yeah, I see what you mean. Ok, and what are these Youth Training Schemes everyone's talking about?

W: Well, they are training courses which are very practical. They're run by the government and you can find them in many different places. They also cover many different types of training. You even get paid for something while you're doing them.

M: But it doesn't guarantee me a job, right?

W: No, that's true. But it may help.

M: Ok. So, school, adult education college and the Youth Training Scheme. Hmm, can I see some more details?

W: Yes, of course. Here are some leaflets. Why don't you look at them and come back when you've thought about it?

Q. 11. What can we learn about the man from the beginning of the conversation?

Q. 12.What is the advantage of going to adult education college according to the woman?

Q. 13.What kind of training is more practical?

Q. 14.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

(31)

A.He is out of work now.

B.He is worried about unemployment.

C.He is planning on next year.

D.He is thinking of further education.
