Effects of Exercise on Elderly Diabetics (糖尿病人) Most older people with. so-called type

Effects of Exercise on Elderly Diabetics (糖尿病人)

Most older people with. so-called type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) could stop taking insulin (胰岛素) if they would do brisk (轻快的) exercise for 30 minutes just three times a week, according to new medical research results reported in a Copenhagen newspaper. Results from tests conducted on diabetics at the Copenhagen central hospital Rigshospitalet's Center for Muscle Research showed that physical exercise can boost the body's ability to make use of insulin by 30 per cent. This is equal to the effect most elderly diabetics get from their insulin medication (药物治疗) today.

Researchers had a group of non-diabetic men and a group of men with type 2 diabetes, all more than 60 years of age, exercise on bicycles six times a week for three months. After the three months the doctors measured how much sugar the test subjects' muscles could make use of as a measure for how well their insulin worked.

Associate Professor Dr Flemming Dela of the Muscle Research Center said the tests demonstrated that the exercising diabetics had made as good use of insulin as the healthy non-diabetic persons. "This means that the insulin works just as well for both groups. Physical exercise cannot cure people of diabetes, but it can eliminate almost all their symptoms. At the same time it can put off the point at which they have to begin taking insulin," Dela said.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas (胰腺), controlling sugar in the body and is used against diabetes.

Dela said that to achieve the desired effect diabetics need only exercise to the point where they begin to sweat, but that the activity has to be maintained since it wears off after five days without sufficient exercise.

Most diabetics realize that they have to watch their diet while remaining unaware of the importance of exercise, Dela added.

What is the effect of exercise on elderly people with type 2 diabetes?

A.It can help the body make better use of insulin.

B.It can worsen their symptoms.

C.It can help them to eat more.

D.It can cure them of the disease.

Tightened Visa Regulations

According to South Korea's new visa regulations, native speakers of English in South Korea will be required to undergo criminal record checks, medical and drug tests, provide sealed academic transcripts (成绩单)and have their university diplomas inspected, The Korea Times has reported The tightened regulations will affect an estimated 17,000 foreigners that hold E-2 visas-specifically for foreign language teachers.

The most controversial requirement is that English teachers residing (居住) outside South Korea will have to have an interview at a South Korean Embassy before taking up their teaching posts. For applicants living in remote areas in Canada, Australia or the US, this is an additional travel burden. Meanwhile, foreign teachers currently living in South Korea must leave the country after their one-year contracts and renew their visas by visiting a neighboring country and return without additional documentation (文件证据).

The visa changes are a reaction to public concern about the suitability of some foreign teachers. A report from the South Korean Ministry of-Education and Human Resources Development shows between 2001 and August of this year, 1,481 foreign language teachers have been caught for a range of offenses including forged (伪造的) degrees, visa violations and general lawbreaking.

But the changes are likely to slow up the supply of teachers to South .Korea's English language education sector. According to Michael Duffy, manager of a teacher placement service in South Korea, applicants have to spend a few hundred dollars and several months on getting affidavits (书面陈述书) for documents. "South Korea-has put up too many hoops (圈) to jump through," he said, adding that foreigners would seek work elsewhere. Most foreigners wonder if the experience of working in South Korea will be worth the burden of the paper work and increasing restrictions. "I don't think (South) Korea has thought this through," said Scott Mclnnis, a Canadian teacher based in Incheon near Seoul. "This is a reactionary move by the government that will have strong implications for the EFL community."

As part of the efforts to ease the discontent (不满), the South Korean Ministry of Justice has granted a three-month grace period for current E-2 visa holders to prepare the necessary documents.

Which of the following is NOT required of an E-2 visa applicant?

A.To pass a Korean language test.

B.To undergo a medical test.

C.To provide sealed school reports.

Relaxation

During a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body's oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart heat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic(交感的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness.

How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy(争论). A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal "American Psychologist" said that simply sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation(冥想) does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree. These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation.

The debate goes on, but one thing appears to be clear that the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. Once you are aware of all the methods, you can find the one that works best for you.

Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, autoanalysis (自我心理分析) and progressive muscle relaxation. Although these techniques may not, in the end, produce more of a relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals.

According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true when a person is in a state of deep relaxation?

A.The body takes in less oxygen.

B.The heart beats less frequently.

C.Muscles become tense and the body sweats easily.

D.The consciousness becomes more or less calmed.
