Professor Martin's report says that children who attend a number of different schools
, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally (精神上) affected.

The professor says, "It's true. My personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or my assistants may have on the subject."

Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said, "I've never heard such rubbish. Taking me for example, no harm is done to the education of my children who change schools regularly---if they keep to the same system(系统) ,as in our Army schools. In my experience Army children--and I've known quite a few of them--are as well-adjusted(善于适应的)as any others, if not more so. What the Professor doesn't appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt(适应)much better than grown-ups."

When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency (趋向).

"Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation."

According to Professor Martin's report, ______.

A.children have to go to different schools because of their parents' moving around

B.children make slow progress because they are mentally affected

C.signs are shown that many children are mentally affected by their studies

D.changing from one school to another too often has ill effect on children's studies

Part A

Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

Much controversy (争论) has been caused by the publication of new report by Professor B. J. Martin. The report claims to have statistical evidence that children who attend a number of different schools through their parents having to move around the country in search of work are more likely to have low academic achievement. There are also indications of an unusually high rate of psychological disturbances (骚动) among such children.

The professor, who has long suspected this negative effect on children, stresses that this is not simply an expression of prejudice. "It’s true, " he says. "My personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal attitudes that my colleagues or I may have on the subject. "

Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer and father of two, said: "As far as I' m concerned, absolutely no harm is done to the education of children who change schools regularly--as long as they keep to the same system, as in our Army schools. Army children are as well-adjusted as any others, if not more so. What the professor does not appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt much better than adults. "

When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his report suggested that all such children were backward or disturbed in some way, but simply that there was a Clear tendency in their experience. While the extremely bright child could cope with regular changes of schools without harming his or her general academic progress, the majority of children suffered from constantly having to enter a new learning environment.

The report mentioned in the first paragraph suggests that ______.

A.children who move around the country with their parents are more capable

B.it may not be good for children to change schools too often

C.parents are looking for a better school for their children’s education

D.more and more children are suffering from psychological problems

听力原文:W: Hi, Jim. What are you doing?

M: Oh. Hi, Linda. I'm working on a report on energy sources for my environmental science class. But I'm having trouble finding enough information.

W: You know, we were talking about sources of fuel in my class today.

M: Yeah'?

W: Prof. Collins. He's an authority on energy sources. He was telling us about a new way of getting fuel oil from coal.

M: I didn't know that was possible.

W: He said something about coal being set on fire and blasted with a mixture of steam and oxygen. This process produces a gas made up of hydrogen and carbon, the.., hum, the basic elements of oil.

M: And then they do something to change that gas to oil?

W: Right. First, since coal contains fewer hydrogen atoms than oil, they have to add some extra hydrogen to the gas. Then impurities are washed out with methanol, I think, before this gas is sent on to reactors where it's changed into oil.

M: Since coal is so plentiful I guess it won't be long till this new type of oil will be available all over the place, ah?

W: I doubt it. Prof. Collins said something about the process not be economically enough to use in this country. At any rate, you really ought to talk to him. He'll be able to help you more than I can and he's got office hours all afternoon today.

M: Thanks. He's over in Anderson Hall, right?

W: Right.

How did the woman learn about the process she describes?

A.She was doing research for a paper on it.

B.She read a newspaper article about it.

C.She was told about it by her roommate.

D.She heard about it in class.
