It is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. (78)The meanings of thou- sands of everyday perceptions, the bases for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.

Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It includes not only "remembering" things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involving any change in the way an animal typically behaves. (79)Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain be- cause he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory is also involved when a six- year-old child learns to swing a baseball bat.

Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory-storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant-access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 " words" —ready for instant use. An average U.S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information which the teenager has stored. Consider, for ex- ample, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight.

The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person' s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words.

According to the passage, memory is considered to be ______.

A.the basis for decision making and problem solving

B.an ability to store experiences for future use

C.an intelligence typically possessed by human beings

D.the data mainly consisting of words and combinations of words

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

??The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living. People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor. Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem.

As the general standard of living in the country rises, the poverty line does, too. Therefore, even with today&39;s relatively high standard of living, about tenpercent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However, if these people had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living. Economist ssuggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs.

For one thing, more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work. Over 40 percent of the poor people are children. By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in many industries. A large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 years old, the normal retirement age.

Some poor adults do not look for jobs for avariety of personal reasons: they are sick, they do not have any motivation, they have family problems, or they do not believe that they can find a job.

Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs, they have few skills that they can offer.

At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways. First, if the national economy grows, businesses and industries will hire more workers. Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may fund employment. Then they will no longer be below the poverty line.

Second, if society invests in the poor, the poor will become more productive. If the government spends money on social programs, education, and training for poor people, the poor will have the skills to offer, and then it is more likely that they can find jobs.??

Finally, if the government distributes society&39;s income differently, it will raise some poor people above the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare. In 1975 over 18 million people in the United States received welfare.

Some economists are looking for better solution to the poverty problem. However, at the present time, many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living.

The author&39;s main purpose to write this articleis___.

??

??A.to define what the poverty line is

B.to explain why some people live below the poverty line

C.to find solutions to the problem of poverty

D.to show sympathy for those poor people

More than 40 percent of the poor people are children. This is mainly because ___.A.they do not have enough motivation

B.they are so young that they are deprived of chances to work

C.they fail to get enough education

Most of the American poor people are not qualified for employment because___.A.they do not have any motivation to work

B.they are not very self-confident

C.they are too young or too old to work

D.they have physical and family problems

Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Ten percent of the Americans live a poor life.

B.Poor people are those who live below the poverty line.

C.The poverty line rises as the general standard of living rises.

D.The poverty line tends to be at the same level.

We may conclude from the passage that___.A.better solutions to the poverty problem are not yet found

B.welfare will enable people to be rich

C.poor people are bound to go out of the poverty line of they have chances to do business

D.Employment is the best solution to the poverty problem

第6题
A rapid means of long-distance transportation became a necessity for the United States as settlement (新拓居地) spread ever farther westward. The early trains were impractical curiosities, and for a long time the railroad companies met with troublesome mechanical problems. The most serious ones were the construction of rails able to bear the load, and the development of a safe, effective stopping system. Once these were solved, the railroad was established as the best means of land transportation. By 1860 there were thousands of miles of railroads crossing the eastern mountain ranges and reaching westward to the Mississippi. There were also regional southern and western lines.

The high point in railroad building came with the construction of the first transcontinental system. In 1862 Congress authorized two western railroad companies to build lines from Nebraska westward and from California eastward to a meeting point, so as to complete a transcontinental crossing linking the Atlantic seaboard with the Pacific. The Government helped the railroads generously with money and land. Actual work on this project began four years later. The Central Pacific Company, starting from California, used Chinese labor, while the Union Pacific employed crews of Irish laborers. The two groups worked at remarkable speed, each trying to cover a greater distance than the other. In 1869 they met at a place called Promontory in what is now the state of Utah. Many visitors came there for the great occasion. There were joyous celebrations all over the country, with parades and the ringing of church bells to honor the great achievement.

The railroad was very important in encouraging westward movement. It also helped build up industry and farming by moving raw materials and by distributing products rapidly to distant markets. In linking towns and people to One another it helped unify the United States.

The major problems with America's railroad system in the mid 19th century lay in ______.

A.poor quality rails and unreliable stopping systems

B.lack of financial support for development

C.limited railroad lines

D.lack of a transcontinental railroad

How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other, and later they agreed on certain signs. These signs were called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.

The power of words, then, exists in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words remind us of the glad and sad events of our past, and the more we read and learn, the more number of words increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which deeply attract our minds and emotions. This skillful use of words is called "literary style". Above all, a real poet can express his meaning in words which sing like music and can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them properly, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

The origin of language is______.

A.treasure handed down from the past

B.a matter that is hidden or secret

C.a problem not yet solved

D.a question difficult to answer
