In this assignment you will look for three pieces of publicly available published material to summarize. The published materials should be academic articles in journals. You may have to locate more than one and select the best ones. This assignment has two main parts: 1. a straightforward summary of each of the three documents, and 2. a framework for the summaries. The framework is a normal introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph in which you briefly discuss the three documents together, perhaps linking the most important or interesting information you obtained from your three sources. You should decide which document you will summarize first, second, and third, and provide some logical link between the summaries--for example, mentioning that the next summary contains a different type of information from the last, or elaborates on the information from the last, or approaches the topic from a different perspective. Remember to include a thesis statement in the introduction that will make it clear what the point of this paper is with its three summaries. Your literature review should run from 300 to 350 words. You can also choose to write a longer LR which runs from 750 to 1000 words. If you do so, you will get 50% extra points of your LR. Adapted from Leki, I. (1998). Over the years I have introduced thousands of international visitors to life in the United States. This has caused me to try to look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors. I am confident that the values listed in this booklet describe most (but not all )Americans, and that understanding these values can help you, the international visitor, understand Americans.
It is my belief that if foreign visitors really understand how deeply these 13 values are ingrained in Americans, they will then be able to understand 95% of American actions — actions which might otherwise appear “strange,” “confusing,” or “unbelievable” when evaluated from the perspective of the foreigner's own society and its values.
The different behaviors of a people or a culture make sense only when seen through the basic beliefs, assumptions and values of that particular group. When you encounter an action, or hear a statement in the United States which surprises you, try to see it as an expression of one or more of the values listed in this booklet.
1. Can an ordinary American tell you his/her value system?
A. Yes, because this is something an American lives by.
B. Yes, because values are something always in their mind.
