听力原文: The United States trade deficit widened, bringing the gap for last year to a record high of more than 725 billion dollars. The Commerce Department reported that the gap between what America sells abroad and what it imports rose by more than 65 billion dollars in December. It's been 15 years since the US was somewhere close to selling as much overseas as it buys from abroad. But the concern about the size of the trade deficit has grown in the last few years. Last year it was equivalent to 5.8 percent of total US national income. It's a problem politically because many members of Congress regard it as a sign that American jobs are being lost to other countries. The point was underlined by the especially contentious bilateral deficit with some Asian countries.

Which of the following statements about the US trade is TRUE?

A.The gap between its import and export narrowed.

B.The Commerce Department shows great concern.

C.What it imports has outnumbered what it exports.

D.Only the government concerns about the trade deficit.

听力原文: When US spacewoman Joan Higginbotham is not flying and working in space, she might be found somewhere on earth giving a speech. Higginbotham, who grew up in Chicago, and became an engineer before joining NASA, that is, the National Air and Space Administration, gives about a dozen speeches a year. Each speech is different, because she tailors her remarks to each audience. Through interviews and emails, she finds out in advance her listeners' educational level and what information they want to know. On the subject of space walks, for example, audiences vary in their interests and how much complexity they can comprehend. To elementary school children, Higginbotham may discuss a problem that many kids want to know about. "How do spacemen in a spacesuit eat, drink and go to the bathroom?" Her answer is, "The spacesuit is really a small spacecraft with room for food and water containers and a waste collection system." To a high school audience, she might satisfy a curiosity that often arises in her pre-speech interviews with students who obviously have seen many science fiction movies. "Do spacemen carry weapons in case they encounter enemies in space?" Her answer is, "No!" To scientists, she might provide technical details on such topics as the design of spacesuit that protects spacemen from the deadly temperature extremes of space. Just as elaborate preparation is required for success in space, Higginbotham says that it's important for speakers to learn as much as possible about their listeners before a speech because every audience is different.

B.She was an engineer.

C.She was an educator.

听力原文:Articles in magazines and newspapers and special reports on radio and television

听力原文: Articles in magazines and newspapers and special reports on radio and television reflect the concern of many Americans about the increasing dropout rate in our junior and senior high schools. Coupled with this fact is the warning that soon we will no longer have workforce to fill the many jobs that require properly-educated personnel. The highest student dropout rate is not a recent development. Ten years ago, many urban schools were reporting dropout rates between 35 and 50 percent. Some administrators maintain that dropouts remain the single greatest problem in their schools. Consequently, much effort has been spent on identifying students with problems in order to give them more attention before they become failures. Since the dropout problem doesn't start in senior high school, special programs in junior high school focus on students who show promise but have a record of truancy, that is, staying away from school without permission. Under the guidance of counselors, these students are placed in classes with teachers who have had success in working with similar young people. Strategies to motivate students in high school include rewarding academic excellence by designating scholars of the month, or by issuing articles of clothing such as school letter jackets formally given only to athletes. No one working with these students claims to know how to keep all students in school. Counselors, teachers, and administrators are in the frontlines of what seems at times to be a losing battle. Actually, this problem should be everyone's concern, since uneducated, unemployed citizens affect us all.

(30)

A.It may produce an increasing number of idle youngsters.

B.It may affect the quality of higher education in America.

C.It may cause many schools to go out of operation.

D.It may lead to a lack of properly educated workers.

听力原文: When the Westinghouse Science Talent Search Team named its top achievers in 1983, the grand prize went to Paul Ning, then 16.

Paul Ning is not a native-born American. He is the son of a professor from the People's Republic of China. Ning came to the United States at the age of three. By 11, he was constructing a simple wind tunnel to study the relationship between speed and pressure. Now being a senior at the superb Bronx High School of Science in New York City, Ning feels: "You have to be aggressive in your studies to really understand what you're doing." His mother adds: "He always tries to prove to us and to himself that he is the best."

Out of 40 Westinghouse finalists, nine, including Ning, were born in Asia and three others were of Asian descent. This story has reminded us of the fact that some 10% of Harvard University's freshman class is Asian-American. While no more than 15% of California high school graduates are eligible for admission to the University of California system, about 40% of Asian-American qualify.

Most educators believe that Asian scholastic achievement has much to do with breeding and nurture. Many Asian-American children have also well-educated parents who are always on the school's side. In addition, most Asians regard education as the best way to recognition and success through which they pay the indefinite debt to parents. Also, this is a way of showing filial duty. As a result, it is no wonder that Asian-American children usually do a far better job than their classmates.

(30)

A.New York City.

B.Somewhere in the United States

C.Somewhere other than the United States.

D.Somewhere other than Asia.
