How to Do Well in Exams

Do not underestimate (低估 ) the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and retaining crucial information. But do not overdo it. 46 An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first exam, get into the habit of being up and ready to work by game. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.

On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack two of everything you need (pens, pencils, erasers, etc. ) , then make your way to the examination hall in good time. 47

Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as "discuss" ,

"compare" and "evaluate" 48 It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected : after all, examiners call get very bored marking stereotypical (千篇一律的 ) answers.

49 If you do need something else to focus on to help you collect your thoughts, choose a fixture (固定设施 ) in the room, such as the ceiling--or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted.

Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other students.50

A. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people&39;s anxiety can be contagious (传染性的) , and you may suffer from undue panic.

B. Try not to be tempted to look at those around you, or at the clock.

C. When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up all the words you didn&39;t understand.

D. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.

E. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.

F. Go and have a well-earned rest-then prepare for your next exam.

根据以下材料回答题

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. These people have somethingin common. And once we know what it is we can try to do it ourselves.

How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have.If you follow the skills, they&39; llhelp you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.

First of all, good talkers ask questions.Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answera question. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. And to find outwhat sort of person you are talking to, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.

Real listening at least means some things.First it means not to change the subject of the con-versation.Real listening also means not just listening to words but to tones of voice. If the voicesounds dull, then, it&39; s time for you to change the subject.

Finally, good talkers know well now to deal with the occasion of parting. If you want to seethat person again, don&39; t keep it a secret.Let people know what you feel, and they may walk awayfeeling as if they&39; ve known you half their life.

Step Back in Time

Do you know that we live a lot longer now than the people who were born before us? One hundred years ago the average woman lived to be 45. But now, she can live until at least 80.

One of the main reasons for people living longer is that we know how to look after ourselves better. We know which foods are good for us and what we have to eat to make sure our bodies get all the healthy things they need.We know why we sometimes get ill and what to do to get better again. And we know how important it is to do lots of exercise to keep our hearts beating healthily.

But in order that we don"t slip back into bad habits, let"s have a look at what life was like 100 years ago.

Families had between 15 and 20 children, although many babies didn"t live long.Children suffered from lots of diseases, especially tickets (佝偻病 ) and scurvy (坏血病) , which are both caused by bad diets. This is because many families were very poor and not able to feed their children well.

Really poor families who lived in crowded cities like London and Manchester often slept standing up,bending over a piece of string, because there was no room for them to lie down.

People didn"t have fridges until the 1920s. They kept fresh food cold by storing it on windowsills (窗台板 ) , blocks of ice, or even burying it in the garden.

Some children had to start work at the age of seven or eight to earn money for their parents. If you had lived 100 years ago, you might well be selling matchsticks (火柴杆) (a job done by many children ) or working with your dad by now.

The Difference between Man and Computer

What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don&39;t yet __________ (51) for? The answer is simple: People read newspaper stories for a reason: to learn more about __________ (52) they are interested in. Computers, on the other hand,don&39;t. In fact, computers don&39;t __________ (53) have interests; there is nothing in particular that they are trying to fred out when they read. However, these physiological and social goals give __________(58) to several intellectual or cognitive goals. How to Deal With Problems of Growing Old

Thirty-one million Americans are over 60 years of age, and twenty-nine million of them are healthy, busy, productive citizens. By the year 2030, one in every five people in the United States will be over 60. Elderly people are members of the fastest-growing minority in this country. Many call this the "graying of America"

In 1973, a group called the "Gray Panthers" was organized. This group is made up of young and old citizens. They are trying to deal with the special problems of growing old in America. The Gray Panthers know that many elderly people have health problems: some cannot walk well, others cannot see or hear well. Some have financial problems; prices are going up so fast that the elderly can&39;t afford the food, clothing, and housing they need. Some old people are afraid and have safety problems. Others have emotional problems. Many elderly are lonely because of the death of a husband or a wife. The Gray Panthers know another fact, too. Elderly people want to be as independent as possible. So, the Gray Panthers are looking for ways to solve the special problems of the elderly.

The president of the Gray Panthers is Maggie Kuhn, an active woman in her late 70s. She travels across the United States, educating both young and old about the concerns of elders. One of the problems she talks about is where and how elders live. She says that Americans do not encourage elders to live with younger people. As far as Maggie Kuhn is concerned, only elders who need constant medical care should be in nursing homes.

Maggie Kuhn knows that elders need education, too. She spends lots of time talking to groups of older Americans. She encourages them to continue to live in their own houses if it is possible. She also tells them that it is important to live with younger people and to have children around them. This helps elders to stay young at heart.

What health problems do many elderly have ? 查看材料

Home Schooling

All children in the United States have to receive an education, but the law does not say they have to be educated at school. A number of parents prefer not to send their children to school,46There are about 300,000 home-schoolers in the United States today. Some parents prefer teaching their children at home because they do not believe that public schools teach the correct religious values; others believe they can provide a better educational experience for their children by teaching them at home.47David Guterson and his wife teach their three children at home. Guterson says that his children learn very differently from children in school.48For example, when there is heavy snowfall on a winter day, it maystart a discussion or reading about climate, snow removal (去除) equipment, Alaska, polai bears (北极熊) ,and winter tourism.A spring evening when the family is out watching the stars is a good time to ask questions about satellites and the space program49

Home schooling is often more interesting than regular schools, but critics say that home-schooled are outsiders who might be uncomfortable mixing with other people in adult life.50However, most parents don&39;t have the time or the desire to teach their children at home, so schools will continue to be where most children get their formal education.

请在第__(46)__处填上正确答案。 查看材料

A.Interestingly, results show that home-schooled children quite often do better than average on national tests in reading and math.

B.Critics also say that most parents are not well qualified to teach their children.

C.Learning starts with the children"s interests and questions.

D.Children who are educated at home are known as "home-schoolers."

E..In some countries, however, children are educated by their parents.

F.If the Brazilian rain forests are on the TV news.it could be a perfect time to talk about how rain forestsinfluence the climate, and how deserts are formed.

根据下面内容,回答题:

Imagine going to sleep in October and waking up in May! Well, marmots and ground squirrels stay warm by sleeping all winter. All this time, they do not wake up once. This special kind of sleep is called hibernation. During this sleep, the heart slows down, and the animal breathes more slowly, it doesn"t move around, so it uses less energy.

Animals like the marmot and the ground squirrel inhabit the coldest parts of the world. They need special talents to survive in these frigid places. Their furry coats keep them snug when the temperature falls below zero. It often gets this cold in the Arctic, a land that is just below the North Pole.

Before the long winter, some animals eat and eat. After a while, they grow very fat. When the winter comes, they live on the fat saved up in their bodies. Layers of fat keep an animal warm.

Arctic animals also have other ways to beat the cold. Rabbits in the Arctic, for example, have very small ears. Small ears keep heat in, while big ears let it out. Small things usually keep heat in.

Have you ever slept in a room that is very small, and noticed how hot it can get?

It rarely gets warm in the Arctic. But although summer seasons there are very short, the sun shines brightly. Plants seem to spring up before your eyes! Animals such as caribou look forward all year to summer, when they can eat fresh grass again. Every minute of sunshine is important to their lives.
