Trillions of incredibly tiny diamonds, possibly formed by a dying star before the solar sy
stem was born 4.5 billion years ago, have been found by researchers 【C1】______ four meteorites.

The powder-like diamonds could be among the oldest things in the 【C2】______ , said Roy Lewis, senior research associate at the University of Chicago.

The diamonds may 【C3】______ clues about the chemistry of stars, and if scientists can determine how they formed, that could suggest better ways of manufacturing tiny diamonds for 【C4】______ purposes, he said.

"It's quite possible that nature is doing it more 【C5】______ than we've been doing it," he said. "So maybe we've got something to learn."

The new find is 【C6】______ , said John Wood, staff scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics. Although diamonds have been found before in meteorites, they were formed relatively recently 【C7】______ the shock of impact, he said in a telephone interview.

But Wood said the new report made him "quite sure" the newly found diamonds are older than the sun.

Lewis said researchers never expected to find diamonds when they started 【C8】______ a stone-like meteorite that had plunged into Mexican cornfield in 1969.

They were studying an unusual carbon dust in the meteorite, and to purify the sample they went though several steps to dissolve other materials. They expected the sample to remain black through the purification, but to their surprise in the final step it turned 【C9】______ .

Lewis said they believed the final stage had dissolved the carbon they wanted to study. But tests showed that the white residue was in fact made of carbon. Other tests found that it contained an unusual combination of forms of the gas xenon, 【C10】______ that it came from outside the solar system.

Still another battery of tests 【C11】______ the residue as diamond dust, so fine that a row of 20,000 grains would extend about the 【C12】______ of a human hair.

The researchers also found diamonds in three other meteorites, Lewis said. Tests showed all four meteorites were as old as the solar system, and that the embedded diamonds did not form. within the meteorite 【C13】______ of collisions.

So the diamonds must have 【C14】______ somewhere else before the meteorites formed, making them as old or older than the solar system.

The diamonds may have formed in the upper atmosphere of a star in the late "red giant" stage, where the temperature and abundance of hydrogen could 【C15】______ diamonds to form. as carbon gas condenses.

【C1】

Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, reported their recent finding. They presented research at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. Their study attempted to show what people might see if they could observe the universe from far away.

The scientists gave a number value to the colors of the different star systems. Then they added the numbers together and found the average measurement. The scientists used this arrange to identify the color of the universe. They said it was a very pretty light green color. They called it "cosmic spectrum green." Many newspapers and television stations reported their finding. Other scientists and color engineers attempted to reproduce the result.

Mark Fairchild of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York was the first person to identify a mistake. He discovered a mistake in the computer software program used by the Johns Hopkins scientists. When the mistake was corrected, the results changed. The new color of the universe is much less colorful. It is very close to white.

The scientists have apologized for the mistake. They are now working with the Rochester Institute of Technology to produce more images of the color of the universe.

What did the two astronomers from Johns Hopkins University report?

听力原文: The existence of black hole had long been predicted by theory but never confirmed.

A black hole is an extremely mysterious object. It has a gravity which is so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. It can change space and time in basic ways.

A powerful X-ray stream drew the attention of scientists to the event. It is located near the center of a galaxy which is about 700 million light-years from Earth. According to the international team of scientists, gases from the star have been heated to a temperature of multimillion-degree when they were drawn toward the black hole. Thus a strong wind is produced.

Scientists said a star about the size of our sun was coming close to the black hole. The big gravity of the black hole pulled the star to the point of breaking. It is estimated to have a gravity 100 million times that of our sun.

The effect is similar to the dragging force the moon has on the Earth's oceans, but is much more violent. The black hole has observed to have eaten up about 1 percent of the star. It seems that this unlucky star has just entered the wrong neighborhood.

Scientists have seen other similar X-ray streams before, but never were able to locate them at the center of a galaxy, where black holes may exist. The new observations also found that a black hole is always surrounded by X-rays.

(33)

A.It has an intense gravity.

B.It can change space and time in basic ways.

C.Nothing can escape from it.

D.It has been predicted by theory but never confirmed.

Miguel knocked on one of the doors. When no one answered, he pushed the door open. He imme
diately realized his mistake. He'd blundered into another dressing room. Miguel knew he should leave the room immediately, but he couldn't help staring at the guy in the room. He seemed to be taking to himself. No one in the room was talking back. Yet there was someone else there. A girl. Most of her was hidden behind the speaker's broad-shouldered body. Miguel saw a flash of slender hands reaching up, fussing with the front of the guy's light brown hair.

"Glenn, hold still!" the girl's voice suddenly cut through the speaker's monologue, "If you don't stop wriggling. I might burn you with this curling iron!"

Miguel's blood turned to boiling acid. Leanna! She hadn't wasted any time getting a new boyfriend. Miguel had to see what this loser looked like.

"Excuse me," Miguel said, walking toward the couple. "Can you tell me the supply closet?"

"This isn't the supply closet," Glenn said arrogantly, "Get lost. "

"But I'm already lost," Miguel said cheerfully. He was ignoring Glenn now and watching Leanna for some sort of reaction. Her face was totally drained of color, and her almond eyes were so wide, they almost seemed round.

"What are you doing here?" Leanna gasped.

"Looking for an extension cord," Miguel replied. He pointed to the white cord connecting the curling iron to the outlet. "How about that one?"

"No! That's mine," Glenn said, "Leanna, you only put one wave in my hair. "

"Hey, Leanna, you never did my hair when we were dating," Miguel said. He leaned against the wall, almost in Leanna's face, and ruffled his bangs with his fingers.

Miguel wasn't sure what he was trying to prove. He couldn't stand seeing Leanna so close to Glenn, touching his hair. If he could goad Leanna into losing her temper, Miguel hoped he'd be able to hate her again, instead of wanting her back.

"Get out of here," Leanna said coldly.

"You used to go out with this janitor?" Glenn asked Leanna.

"I'm not a janitor," Miguel said, "I'm helping Scott with the lights. "

"Yeah?" Glenn turned to Miguel, "Make sure you keep that spotlight on me, boy. I'm the star of this show. "

"You may be the star," Miguel said, his voice low, "but I'm not your boy. "

"I can say whatever I want," Glenn shot back, "My parents pay taxes, but you immigrants sneak into this country illegally and take jobs away from Americans. Do you want me to call Immigration?"

Leanna suddenly stepped between them. "I can't believe you, Glenn. Miguel's not an immigrant. His family came here from the Philippines, and—"

Glenn's nostrils flared, "These foreigners are taking over the country. It makes me sick!"

"I'm a Filipino and I'm proud of it !" Leanna, hands on her hips, was shouting in Glenn's face, "Do I make you sick, Glenn?"

"Of course not !" Glenn looked shocked, "You were born here. I'm talking about people who come from other countries. Most of them go on welfare and they run down the neighborhoods and commit crimes. Why should they have the same rights as American citizens ?"

"Because we're human beings," Leanna said.

Miguel noticed that Leanna had put herself in the same category. She wasn't trying to impress him. She was speaking from the heart.

"It's not where you come from that matters," Leanna told Glenn, "It's what kind of person you are inside. Miguel's honest and hardworking, but you're a conceited jerk!"

"What's going on in here?" a new voice demanded. The agent, Tyrone Ashby, appeared in the doorway. "Five minutes to curtain time! Glenn, get out there!"

"I'm outta here, all right," Glenn said,

A.honesty, diligence and the same color in skin

B.sense of humor and his family

C.honesty and his money

D.broad and profound knowledge

听力原文:Charlie' s Angels sent Adam Sandler' s devilish new comedy to purgatory at the we
ekend box office, as the femme crime-fighting trio easily retained the No. 1 slot with a haul of $25 million, according to studio estimates issued Sunday.

Sandier' s Little Nicky, in which the comedian plays the kind-hearted son of Satan, opened at No. 2 with $18.1 million a great figure for most movies, but a relative disappointment for Sandier. His last two movies, 1999' s Big Daddy and 1998' s The Waterboy, launched with $41.5 million and $39.4 million, respectively.

I think we would have wanted it to open higher, but you need to look at the reality of the marketplace, said David Tuckerman, president of distribution at New Line Cinema, which released Little Nicky.

Sandier Gets Guy Vote

The reality, observers said, was that Charlie' s Angels has far exceeded expectations by grossing $75.4 million after two weekends, thus providing a lot of competition for the Sandier picture. Little Nicky did well, said Jeff Blake, president of worldwide marketing and distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment, which released Charlie' s Angels. But once you open at $40 million (as Angels did) you have a huge advantage.

Blake predicted Angels, which stars Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Lin, would pass $100 million before Thanksgiving (on Nov. 23) and go on to surpass $150 million in the United States and Canada.

Additionally, Charlie' s Angels enjoyed wide support from adult moviegoers as well as youngsters, while Little Nicky tended to play to Sandier' s core audience of young males. New Line' s Tuckerman said those young males generally see a Sandier picture several times, which could give it some extra legs.

The top 10 contained two other new releases. The military drama Men of Honor opened at No. 3 with about $14 million, and the sci-fi thriller Red Planet debuted at No. 5 with $9 million. Acclaimed British comedy Billy Elliot, about a working class boy who wants to become a ballet dancer, went into wide release in its fifth weekend and jumped four places to No. 9 with $2.8 million. Its total stands at $6 million. Tracking firm Exhibitor Relations reported ticket sales for the top 12 films were $101.5 million, up 6.7 percent from last weekend, and up 15 percent from the year-ago period, when Pokemon: The First Movie opened at No. 1 with $31 million. Men of Honor gives its star, Robert De Niro, two movies in the top five, as his comedy hit Meet the Parents fell two places to No. 4 in its sixth weekend with $10.6 million. The 38-day total for Parents stands at $130.3 million.

With its $9 million opening, Val Kilmer's Red Planet, suffered from being the second Martian epic to reach theaters this year: Mission to Mars opened to $22.9 million in March en route to an underwhelming $60.7 million. Red Planet was originally set to debut in March as well, but was pushed back first to June, and then to November. Warner Bros. had hoped Planet would open in the mid-teens, said Dan Fellman, the studios president of distribution.

Why angels whip devil?

A.Angels enjoyed wide support from adult moviegoers as well as youngsters.

B.The advertisement played a great role.

C.The audience don' t like Devil.

D.Angels have a large number of superstars.

In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walter Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney' s cartoon film for children. When Walter Disney heard Nash's voice, he said, "Stop! That's our duck!"

The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film, The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and worn his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audiences liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very easily. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody, like Mickey.

In the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational film about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared-there were no more new cartoons.

Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today's Children can still see the old cartoons on the television and hear that famous voice.

Who made Donald Duck cartoons?

A.Mickey Mouse.

B.Clarence Nash.

C.Walter Disney.

D.Pluto.

Are you ready for your Avril Lavigne(American pop singer) mobile phone? Cellphone companies are developing a new wireless phone featuring an "intelligent" faceplate. Subscribers will be able to personalize the look of their phone, and get theme-related ring tones, games and video clips.

Korean handset manufacturer Curitel and US software company Wildseed are partnering to launch a new wireless phone aimed at music-loving, fashion-conscious teens.

The main appeal of the phone, named "Onyx", is its "Smart Skin" faceplate. It also has a built in camera, FM radio, games and web links that all relate to a particular theme.

The faceplate on the phone, which contains about 10 times more memory than an average mobile, is changeable. An Avril Lavigne phone, for example, has a photo of the teen pop star on the faceplate, with software that shows an Avril screensaver. There are also clips from her latest video, concert ticket information and links to her favorite websites.

Curitel expects the handsets, which use the GSM phone network, to be available in US retail stores in early 2004, and later throughout the world. Different colored faceplates could be worth U.S. $1 billion in annual sales worldwide. With the new faceplates, Wildseed hopes to change the way the wireless phone industry sells to the MTV audience.

Some phone carriers are in a competitive money-losing spiral of offering customers free monthly minutes. So, the additional income from downloads is crucial. As adult subscriptions reach their maximum limit, wireless phone carriers are hot for the young people.

Targeting young customers is necessary because it is the only market that shows significant interest in using wireless phones for more than just talking. Text-messaging has proven to be an important feature for teens.

The price of the new phones is likely to be a little less than U.S. $200. Teenagers are an unpredictable market, but analyst said the new phones could tap into the youthful desire to personalize their favorite products.

According to the passage, the new wireless phone is characterized by ______.

A.a built-in camera

B.video games

C.a smart faceplate

D.theme-related ring tones
