Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文:Childhood poverty has both immediate and lasting negative effects. Children in low-income families fare more poorly than children in more affluent families in the areas of economic security, health, and education. Children living in families that are poor are more likely than children living in other families to have difficulty in school, to become teen parents, and, as adults, to earn less and be unemployed more. The ,child poverty rate provides important information about the percentage of U. S. children whose current life circumstances are hard and whose futures are potentially limited as a result of their family's low income.

The full distribution of the income of children's families is important, not just the percentage in poverty. Knowing that more and more children live in affluent families tells us that a growing proportion of America's children enjoy economic well-being. The growing gap between rich and poor children suggests that poor children may experience more relative deprivation even if the percentage of poor children is holding steady.

Since 1980, the percentage of children living in families with medium income has fallen from 41% to 34% in 1996, while the percentage of children living in families with high income and the percentage of children in extreme poverty have risen, from 17% to 24% and from 7% to 8%, respectively.

(27)

A.Teen pregnancy and difficulty in school.

B.Low self-esteem and poor nutrition.

C.Difficulty in school and physical abuse.

D.Illiteracy and teen pregnancy.

听力原文: The oldest public schools were founded to give free education to clever boys whose parents could not afford to educate them privately (26) . They were under "public" management or control. But today these schools, and similar ones which were built within the past 120 years, are mostly boarding' schools (27) . The pupils live as well as study there. Some public schools also take day-pupils. Normally pupils are admitted by examination. Since state schools do not prepare children for this, parents who wish to send their children to a public school often send them first to a preparatory school Preparatory schools are small, private primary schools which prepare children for the public school examination (28) .

Public schools have produced many of Britain's most famous and distinguished men and women and many parents are still ready to make great sacrifices to send their children there. More pupils come from Britain's upper classes or wealthy families.

(27)

A.To help poor boys and girls.

B.To give free education to smart boys whose family cannot afford the tuition of a private school.

C.To help clever boys become cleverer.

D.To encourage students to live at school.
