For years people have been saying that the railways are dead. We all keep hearing that

trains are slow, that they lose money, that they’re dying. But this is far from the true. In these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, a railway takes you from the heart of a city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams. And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.

Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. For we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorways we can’t use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly in for the same reason.

A. we can do without railways

B. trains have much in common with motorcars and planes

A. It is cheaper to travel by train than by plane.

B. Super-fast trains travel even faster than planes.

C. The railway station is usually at the center of a city.

D. A train carries more goods than a motorcar or plane does.

4. The writer thinks that the railways, far from being dead, are very much alive because ___________.

A. we can have a smooth and untroubled journey

B. we’ll not have enough money to fly everywhere

C. we can now travel in super-fast trains

D. all of the above

5. The best title for this passage may be ________.

who wants to live forever? If your doctor could give you a drug that would let you hav

who wants to live forever?

If your doctor could give you a drug that would let you have a healthy life for twice as long, would you take it? The good news is that we may be drawing near to that date.Scientists have already extended the lives of flies, worms and mice in laboratories. Many now think that using genetic treatments we will soon be able to extend human life to at least 140 years.

This seems a great idea.Think of how much more time we could spend chasing our dreams, spending time with our loved ones, watching our families grow and have families of their own.

“Longer life would give us a chance to recover from our mistakes and promote long term thinking,”says Dr Gregory Stock of the Universjty of California School of Public Health.“It would also raise productivity by adding to the year we can work.”

Longer lives don’t just affect the people who live them. They also affect society as a whole.“We have war poverty, all sons of issues aronnd, and I don’t think any of them would be at all helped by having people live longer,”says US bioethicist Daniel CaUahan.“The question is’What will we get as a society?’I suspect it won’t be a better society."

It would certainly be a very different society.People are already finding it more difficult to stay married.Divorce rates are rising. What would to marriage in a society where people lived for 140 years? And what would happen to family life if nine or l0 generation of the same family were all alive at the same time?

Researeh into ageing may enable women to remain fertile for longer. And that raises the prospect of having 100一year—old parents,or brothers and sisters born 50 years apartl. We think of an elder sibling as someone who can protect us and offer help and advice. That would be hard to do if that sibling came from a completely different generation.

Working life would also be affected, especially if the retirement age was lifted.More people would stay in work for longer. That would give us the benefits of age—skill, wisdom and good judgement.

On the other hand, more people working for longer would create greater competition for jobs. It would make it more difficult for younger people to find a job.Top posts would be dominated by the same few individuals, making career progress more difficult. And how easily would a 25一year—old employee be able to communicate with a 125一year—old boss?

Young people would be a smaller part of a society in which people lived to 140.It may be that such a society would place less importance on guiding and educating young people, and more on making life comfortable for the old.

And society would feel very different if more of its members were older. There would be more wisdom, but less energy Young people like to move about.old people like to sit still.Young people tend to act without thinking.old people tend to think without acting.Young people are curious and like to experience different things.old people are less enthusiastic about change. In fact.they are less enthusiastic ahout everything.

The effect of anti—ageing technology is deeper than we might think. But as the science advances,we need to think about these changes now.

“If this could ever happen, then we’d better ask what kind of society we want to get.”says Daniel Callahan.“We had better not go anywhere near it2 until we have figure those problems out.”

第 26 题 Which of ole following is NOT mentioned as one of the things that living longer might enable an individual to do?

A.Spending more time with his family.

B.Having more education.

C.Realizing more dreams.

D.Working longer.

Geniuses

In 1905, Albert Einstein developed the theory of special relativity. He also proved that atoms exist and figured out that light behaves as both a particle and a wave. To top it all off, he developed his famous equation E=mcc, which describes the relationship between matter and energy, the same year. He was only 26 years old.

Without a doubt, Einstein was a genius. So was Isaac Newton-as any fan of "Star Trek". The Next Generation can say he invented physics. He also played a big role in the development of calculus, which some people have trouble comprehending even after extensive classroom study. Another genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, started composing music when he was 5 years old. Mozart wrote hundreds of pieces before his death in 1760 at age 35.

According to conventional wisdom, geniuses are different from everyone else. They can think faster and better than other people, In addition, many people think that all that extra brainpower leads to eccentric or quirky behavior. And although geniuses are fairly easy to spot, defining exactly what makes one person a genius is a little trickier. Figuring out how that person became a genius is harder still.

There are two big things that make it difficult to study genius:

The genius label is subjective. Some people insist that anyone with an intelligence quotient (IQ) higher than a certain value is a genius. Others feel that IQ tests measure only a limited part of a person's total intelligence. Some believe high test scores have little to do with real genius.

Genius is a big-picture concept. Most scientific and medical inquiries, on the other band, examine de tails. A concept as subjective as genius isn't easy to quantify, analyze or study.

So, when exploring how geniuses work, it's a good idea to start by defining precisely what a genius is. For the purpose of this article, a genius isn't simply someone with an exceptionally high IQ. Instead, a genius is an extraordinarily intelligent person who breaks new ground with discoveries, inventions or works of art. Usually, a genius' work changes the way people view the world or the field in which the work took place. In other words, a genius must be both intelligent and able to use that intelligence in a productive or impressive way.

Genius and the Brain

The brain regulates the body's organ systems. When a person moves around, it sends impulses along the nerves and tells the muscles what to do. The brain controls the senses of smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing, and the person experiences and processes emotions using his brain, On top of all that, the brain allows people to think, analyze information and solve problems. But how does it make someone smart?

Scientists haven't figured out exactly how all the gray matter in the brain works, but they do have an idea of which part lets people think. The cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), which is the outermost part of the brain, is where thought and reasoning happen. These are the brain's higher function-- the lower functions, which relate to basic survival, take place deeper in the brain.

The cerebral cortex is the largest part of the brain, and it's full of wrinkles and folds that allow it to fit in the skull. If an adult human's cerebral cortex is removed and stretched out, it would be about as large as a few pages of a newspaper. It's divided into s

Questions 11 to I5 are based on the following passage:

Over the years, college students have stood together for what they believe in, from civil rights to anti-war policies to the more recent protests against the unequal distribution of wealth. But nowhere in history have students banned (禁 止)bottled water. Until now.

The bottled water ban, which Parted on just a few campuses, has now spread nationwide to more than 20 universities. The colleges have cither completely banned the use of plastic bottles altogether, or some have taken a more limited approach with partial bans.

Many people believe that producing and bottled water wastes money and harms the environment. They say that bottled water is unnecessary because public water supplies in the U.S. arc among the best in the world. Water fountains and reusable bottles with easy access (获取)to filling stations are a better choice.

An organization called Ban the Bottle raises awareness about the economic and environmental costs of using plastic bottles. The group claims that eight glasses of water a day costs each person 49 cents annually, while drinking from plastic containers costs $I,400 per year. Plastic bottles contain antimony—a chemical that in low doses causes depression, but in large doses can even lead to death.

The controversy over bottled or tap is not limited to the students and college administrations. The makers of bottled water see the movement as a threat. (80) They argue that plastic bottles make UP a small portion of the nation ’s total waste. It&39;s unfair to single out (单独挑出)their product when so many other items are packaged in plastic containers. Plus, water is a healthy choice compared to some sodas and juices that arc also sold at school.

Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

A.Many universities ban or restrict the sale of bottled water.

B.Many states ban or restrict the sale of bottled water.

C.The bottled water industry is concerned about its decreasing sales.

D.Many people are opposed to the bottled water ban.

B.Plastic bottles may do harm to peopled health.

C.The purchase of soft drinks will increase.

D.Bottled is cheap and environment-friendly.

According to Ban the Bottle, drinking bottled water costs _____ dollars per year.A.8

B.20

C.49

D.1400

What does the bottled water industry use in its own defense?A.Bottled water is much leaner than tap water.

B.Students should have freedom of choice.

D.Water is healthier than some sodas and juices.
