听力原文: People since ancient times have used aspirin-like medicines to fight pain and reduce high body temperature. (26)Modern research has found other uses of aspirin. The drug acts as a blood thinner. It can help blood flow past a blockage in an artery. Blockages can cause heart attacks or strokes. As a result, patients at risk of blockages might be advised by their doctors to take a low-strength aspirin every day.
And research continues. (27) A new study has shown that aspirin can improve survival in colon cancer patients. It involved about one thousand three hundred patients with colorectal cancer. The cancer had not spread to other parts of the body yet. The study compared patients who took three hundred twenty-five milligrams of aspirin at least two times a week with those who did not use aspirin. The study found that the aspirin users had an almost thirty percent lower risk of dying from their cancer. That was during an average of eleven years after the cancer was discovered.
Andrew Chan of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital led the study. Doctor Chan says the effects appeared especially strong among patients with tumors expressing a chemical called COX-2. Two-thirds of colorectal cancers produce that chemical. Doctor Chan thinks the aspirin works by blocking it. (28)The study appeared last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It was an observational study. In a controlled study, some patients would have taken aspirin. Others would have received a placebo—sugar pills—for comparison.

SECTION B INTERVIEW
Directions: In this section you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Questions 1 to 5 are based on an interview. At the end of the interview you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following five questions.
Now listen to the interview.
听力原文:M: Miss Ellen Chan? Good to see you. Thank you for coming in to the interview. Now, let me see. You are applying for the vacancy we have for a Marketing Officer Trainee. Isn’t that right?
W: Yes, that’s right.
M: Mm. And you’re in the final year of a degree in Business Administration?
W: Yes, I expect to graduate in the summer of 2009.
M: With French as your major and Marketing as a minor, right?
W: No. [1]Marketing is my major—and French my minor. I’m looking for a career in Marketing, with my languages as a useful back-up.
M: Oh yes, sorry. Well now. I notice that you intend to complete your degree in three years instead of the usual four, and that you were able to persuade the university authorities to agree to that. Why did you decide to approach them in the first place?
W: Well, the reason I wanted to complete the degree as quickly as possible is that I am older than most undergraduate students. I’ve had work experience before starting the degree, and I was anxious to be back into the working world as soon as I could. I made up my mind to show in the first term that I am well-organ-ised and hard-working. I did this, and the university authorities agreed very readily.
M: Have you any regrets about that decision?
W: Well, no, no serious regrets. But I should have liked to give more time to the dramatic and musical activities. I’ve had to cut down on these in my final year.
M: Now, you say in your letter that you are aggressive and ambitious. What exactly do you mean, Miss Chan?
W: I mean that I really do want to test my abilities against very high standards. That’s why I Want to work for your company. And I don’t mean that I bully people. I hope I never do that. But I am determined and I am direct—and most people like that and respond to it. They don’t feel threatened by it.
M: Mm… I think we see eye to eye there. How about those languages? I can hear how good your English is. How is it you can speak both Cantonese and Mandarin?
W: I grew up speaking both languages. [2]My father is a native speaker of Mandarin, and my mother’s Mandarin is very good. And of course I have always spoken Mandarin to my grandparents and my other relatives. I studied French in school and now at university.
M: And how good is your French now?
W: Not as good as my English. I can read it easily and write with no more than a few mistakes, but, I have never spent more than a few weeks in a French speaking country, so neither my listening comprehension nor my speaking are fluent.
M: Mm. Now. How much do you know about the sort of work that the Marketing Officer Trainee does in a company like ours?
W: Well. [3] My reading of the job description suggests that a trainee probably starts as an apprentice working closely with an experienced Marketing Officer, learning how to keep records, identify opportunities, and implement plans and, I suppose, gradually taking on more responsibility and exercising more initiative.
M: Well, Miss Chan, [4]one of your referees say you left a place where you were employed, unexpectedly, in circumstances, and not entirely clear. What happened?
W: I’m not sure what he means. [4] I have certainly never been dismissed. But I did give in my notice and leavea part time job when I had the offer of a university place. I said very little about my reasons for going. They would have been thought strange and rather snobbish.
M: Mm. I see. Well, on another topic altogether. Do you see a use for your languages in all this?
W: Well. Not on a daily basis. My experience is that-if you do have a control of several languages,
A.She is older than most undergraduate students.
B.She majors in French and minors in Marketing.
C.She has work experience before entering the university.
D.She succeeds in shortening the academic years.

听力原文: Hong Kong Kungfu movie superstar Jackie Chan pocketed the Best Leading Actor Award of the 25th Golden Rooster film awards, dubbed "China's Oscar," organizers announced on Saturday evening.
Jackie Chan was nominated for his role in the "New Police Story." It was the first time that film artists from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan competed for personal prizes at the Golden Rooster and Full Blossom Film Festival, which gives out the top honors in China's film industry.
Chan expressed his gratefulness to the jury with three "thanks" in his speech at the awarding- ceremony on Saturday evening. "Two years ago, I wanted to make a breakthrough of my performance by acting a different role. I didn't expect to win such an important award by the film," he said.
In the "New Police Story," Chan played a tragic hero, something he had never tried before in his performance career.
Chun is well known for his Kungfu films such as "Drunken Master," "Police Story" and "Rumble in the Bronx. ' "Thunderbolt," also starring Chan, was the first Hong Kong film to be screened at more than 1,000 US cinemas.
The US film "Rush Hour" featuring Chun was among the top 10 movies in the United States in 1998 in terms of box office revenue.

It's not much , but it' s home. Francis Chan, an engineer, lives in Hampstead, north London, in a flat that' s just 4ft wide by 2lft long. He loves it.
Tiny though it is, it has got all the comforts. Peter Baynes, Chan ' s architect(建筑师) , has achieved a clever piece of design, according to architectural experts.
The Chan mini-house was built on what was once a path down the side of a big Victorianhouse. Not an inch of space is wasted.
When you step in through the front door, you ' re standing in the shower, on Britain ' s only self-cleansing doormatc自动清洁门垫) . A door opens on to an equally tiny toilet with washbasin.
Two steps further in comes the kitc hen, complete with full-sized cooker and fridge, and washer/ drier. A worktop folds down from the wall.
Another step and you' re into the dining/office area. Four people can sit here for. dinner, says Chan as he sets the table-top into place. He even has a fold-down drawing-board for when he' s working at home. The bed is hidden under a cover board right at the back. "I don' t even have to make the bed, " Chan says. "I just put the cover down. "
Chan's business suits hang neatly on the wall over the bed. Daylight comes in through the skylight. The house feels like a very small boat and Chan admits he toyed with the idea of naming it the " boat-house " .
"It cost around£ 4,700 to build last year. Now it' s been valued at£ 30,000. It proves that good design doesn' t need to cost more. It just needs a lot of care," says Chan.
64. By saying "It ' s not much" (line 1, para. 1), the author means that Chan ' s flat________ .
[ A]is cheap
[ B] has cheap furniture
[ C] has a simple design
