Twenty five years ago, Muhammed Yunus, a Bangladeshi economics teacher, was visiting a village when he met a woman who made bamboo stools. She couldn't afford to buy the bamboo to make the stools, so she had to borrow the money from the bamboo sellers and then pay them a large part of the profit from each one she sold. There was so little money left for her to keep that she couldn't afford to buy more bamboo, so she had to borrow more money. And so the cycle continued with no way out for her. She couldn't borrow money from friends or family because they were as poor as she was. She couldn't borrow from the bank because she had no collateral to guarantee that she would pay back the loan. The stool maker needed to sell stools to support her children.

听力原文: Japan's divorce rate rose to a record high last year, reflecting an increasing number of middle-aged and older couples who are parting ways.

The number of divorces rose for a 12th straight year in 2002, according to recently re leased government statistics that provided the latest confirmation that the stigma long associated with breaking up is fading in this country.

According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, a record 289,836 couples divorced last year, up 1.4 percent from the previous high of 285,911 in 2001.

Behind the rise is an increasing number of couples who are parting ways after being married for 20 years or more: They accounted for 15.7 percent in 1975. The corresponding figure for newlyweds—married five years or less—fell to 34.4 percent from 49 percent.

Divorce is no longer seen as a social taboo in harmony-conscious Japan. But that is slowly becoming a thing of the past, a trend some attribute to a weakening of group-oriented values.

Which of the following groups is defined as "newlyweds"?

A.Couples who are married for less than two years.

B.Couples who are married for less than five years.

C.Couples who are married for more than five years.

D.Couples who are married for more than twenty years.

听力原文: Inequality of health care is still paramount, says the WHO's latest report. Indt
tstrialized countries account for less than 20 percent of the world' s population but take 90 percent of health spending. In Japan more than five hundred dollars is spent on drugs per person per year. This compares to just three dollars in Sierra Leone. Only slightly more is spent in many sub-Saharan countries. Over the last fifty years, life expectancy has in- creased globally from forty six years to sixty five. But today, instead of the gap being between the developed and developing countries, it's now biggest between the very poorest nations and all other countries. The bur- den of infectious diseases, including HIV, as well as chronic conditions, coupled with a lack of health care, has led to this situation. However, it's children who are most affected. Almost fifty seven million people died in 2002, nearly twenty percent children of less than 5 years of age, and ninety eight percent of these deaths occurred in developing countries.

Developed countries take ______ of the world's health expense.

A.20 %

B.00%

C.5%

D.98%

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman
marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the Youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for them to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman' s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and she can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.

This important change in women' s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.

We are told that in a family about 1900 ______.

A.few children died before they were five

B.seven or eight children lived to be more than five

C.the youngest child would be fifteen

D.four or five children died when they were five
