听力原文: Well, Toyota really appears to be on the verge of becoming No. 1 worldwide. Now the Japanese automaker has been ramping up production for next year, planning to produce 9.4 million vehicles. That's 4% more than this year, and it is apparently lifting it right past General Motors. GM hasn't given a production target for next year, but it has been forced to slash jobs, scale back on production after seeing its market share eroded by Asian automakers. GM has been the global leader for many decades. Now Toyota stock closed up nearly 1.5% , but it was a very different story for the rest of the market. There was no Santa Claus rally after a surprise decline in orders for durable goods. The Dow Industrials, as you see, with this shot of the Big Board at the New York Stock Exchange fell 78 points. The NASDAQ Composite lost about two-thirds of a percent. Trading volume was very light and the market will be closed on Monday, Christmas day. Typical of the day Research in Motion initially rose on a positive earnings report. The maker of the Blackberry wireless e-mail devices posted a 47% increase in quarterly profits, but by the end of the day, shares were down nearly 3%.

The puzzle had to do with waves. Though it might seem intuitive that waves carry water to shore, and sand along with it, it's not that simple. The crest(浪尖)of a passing wave lifts a given hit of water upward and landward, but the ensuing trough(波谷) pushes the water back down and Out to sea. Near the bottom, there the sand is, the water was always assumed to just slide back and forth—and the sand with it. "If you take a very aloof look at a beach," says Inman, "you'll realize that if the two motions move sand back and forth the same amount, then all the sand should end up in deep water.'
So for beaches to exist, the crest's onshore flow must somehow move enough sand up the beach to counter the seaward tug of both the trough and gravity . The pressure changes in the sand bed, Inman and Conley think, are the key to beach creation. They found that sand doesn't just slide back and forth with each passing wave. Under a trough, it does slide seaward, in a thin layer just above the bottom. But under a crest its movement is often more elaborate. The higher pressure under a crest—higher because the water is piled higher—forces water into the porous(多孔的) sand. This creates strong whirlpools just above the sand, which help loosen it. As the crest passes overhead, the sand first rushes across the bottom; then it abruptly turns violent lifting off the bottom in large, boiling bunches. Finally, just after the crest passes, the sand explodes up into the great water column. The boiling and rushing move more sand than the backsliding under a trough, so there's a net movement of sand toward the shore.

D.To refute a misconception.

Italian experts are proposing a dramatic new solution to the watery threat facing the city of Venice. Rather than battling to keep the sea out—they want to use it to help raise the sinking island-city.
(33) The scheme would~ involve pumping huge quantities of sea water into the ground beneath Venice down 12 pipes each of which would be 700m long. The sea water would make the sand beneath the city expand lifting Venice by 30cra in 10 years.
(34)Now, a panel of engineers and geologists from the respected University of Padua have come up with the new scheme costing just a fraction of that—100m euro.
It says the plan would help raise Venice by almost as much as it has sunk over the past three centuries. The professor leading the project says it is not an alternative to the floodgates - but would work in collaboration with them. Be now wants to carry out a trial to see if the theory would work in practice.
Not everyone is convinced. (35) One expert—who helped stabilize the leaning Tower of Pisa—described the scheme as pure science fiction and warned it could damage the fragile structure of Venice. But the city's mayor is interested. He says it is time to look again at how to raise the city—and is convinced that the technology exists to make it a reality.
