The idea of fighting a noise by making more noise sounds strange, but that's exactly what

motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries.

Car makers' research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing in more noise with the help of loudspeaker can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in tire air. If two sound waves of the same frequency mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time as the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle, we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems both inside and outside the cars.

Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer; this not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less fuel and work better.

Some engineers believe that the noise-killing system will be used in most cars within a few years. But the carmakers haven't decided if they will put it into production because it would add several hundred dollars to the cost of their cars.

Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works?

A.By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B.By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound waves.

C.By mixing new sound waves with the noise and sending them out together.

D.By making copies of the unwanted sound waves and letting them out a little later.

听力原文: Many of the innovations in fire fighting that we will be seeing today were developed right here in America. As you can see from these photos, one of the earliest steam powered fire engines, the Joe. Ross, was built in 1850 and operated right here in Cincinnati. Driven by four large horses, the ten-ton machine was steered by a single front wheel that was attached directly to the horse team. The steam motor on the Joe Ross was used to power the water pump that the big machine used to fight fires.

Over here, we have an actual truck which was built in 1900 by the Waterbus Fire Engine Works of Minneapolis. This was the very first fire engine to utilize a single steam motor for pulling the engine as well as pumping the water. As you may notice at the top of the truck, there is a circular platform. that holds one end of a long ladder. The revolving platform. operates almost like a record turntable in order to make it easier for ladder operators to access buildings from difficult angles. The idea of the ladder turntable is credited to a San Francisco fireman by the name of Daniel Hayes. Hayes' lifesaving invention, when combined with the relatively quick response time of the single engine, helped to bring fire fighting into the modern era.

A.Urban fires

B.American fire fighting innovations.

C.The history of fire.

D.The Great San Francisco Fire.

During the American War of Independence, women were involved in the active fighting in thr
ee ways. First, as members of a distinct branch of the Continental Army, referred to as "Women of the Army," women staffed field hospitals and acted as military support in such roles as water carriers. In an emergency, women water carders, who had plenty of opportunity to observe the firing of cannons, could replace a wounded comrade. The second way that women were involved in active fighting was as regular troop members who wore men's uniforms and fought side by side with their male counterparts. Theoretically, women were not supposed to be recruited into the Continental Army, but if a woman was a good soldier, no one made an issue of sex at a time when the army was so short of: soldiers that boys not yet in their teens were also being recruited in violation of rules. Third, women were occasional fighters affiliated with local militia companies or committees of safety formed to protect the local community.

What is the main idea expressed in the passage?

A.Women played an important role in military hospitals during the Revolutionary war.

B.The Continental Army was successful in teaching women to fire cannons.

C.The services of women on committees of safety were crucial in winning the war.

D.Women were active in combat during the Revolutionary war.

听力原文: Washington: The Bush administration has signaled for the first time that it may
be willing to allow a multinational force in Iraq to operate under the sponsorship of the United Nations as long as it is commanded by an American.

The idea was described by Richard L.Armitage, the deputy secretary of state, as just "one idea being explored" in discussions at the United Nations. It was first hinted at publicly last week by Kofi Annan, the United Nations’ secretary general.

Mr. Armitage’s remarks, made on Tuesday to regional reporters and released by the State Department today, represent a potential shift in course for the administration, which has until now insisted that all military, economic and political matters in Iraq remain under total American control. Allowing the United Nations a leadership role would be intended to win the support of the Security Council for a new mandate authorizing the American-led occupation of the country.

In his remarks, Mr. Armitage declined to discuss the plans in any detail, saying, "I don’t think it helps to throw them out publicly right now." But he described the arrangement under consideration as "a multinational force under U.N. leadership" in which "the American would be the U.N. commander."

On Monday, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was asked whether he could envision American troops fighting under United Nations’ command. His answer: "I think that’s not going to happen." But he went on to rule out only "a blue-hatted leadership" meaning by the United Nations, whose troops wear blue helmets over a peacekeeping force in Iraq.

听力原文:Red Cross is an international organization that cares for people who are in need

听力原文: Red Cross is an international organization that cares for people who are in need of help. The Red Cross exists in almost every country around the globe. A man in a Beijing hospital who needs blood, a woman in Turkey who was injured in an earthquake, and a family in Indonesia that lost their home in Tsunami may all be aided by the Red Cross.

The idea of forming an organization to help people in need began with Jean Dunant. In 1859, he observed how people were suffering on a battlefield in Paris. He wanted to help the wounded soldiers despite which side they were fighting for. His efforts brought on the Geneva Convention, an international treaty. It protects prisoners of war, the sick and wounded, and other citizens during a war.

The Red Cross in the United States was set up by Clara Barton in 1881. Today tile American Red Cross provides a lot of services for the public, such as helping people in need, teaching first aid, demonstrating water safety, and providing blood.

It is physically impossible for a wall-educated intellectual, or a brave man to make money
the chief object of his thoughts; as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them. All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money--ought to like it and to enjoy the satisfaction of winning it; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.

A good soldier, for instance, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay--very properly so, and just complains when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main opinion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.

So of doctors. They like fees no doubt--ought to like them; yet if they are brave and well educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They would rather cure their patient and lose their fees than kill him and get it. And so with all other brave and rightly trained men; their work is first, their fees second, very important always, but still second.

The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A.money matters more than work

B.money is not necessary at all

C.money is as important as work

D.money comes second to work in importance
