Seeking a competitive advantage, some professional

service firms(for example, firms providing advertising,

accounting, or health care services) have considered

offering unconditional guarantees of satisfaction. Such

(5) guarantees specify what clients can expect and what the

firm will do if it fails to fulfill these expectations.

Particularly with first-time clients, an unconditional

guarantee can be an effective marketing tool if the

client is very cautious, the firm’s fees are high, the

(10) negative consequences of bad service are grave, or

business is difficult to obtain through referrals and

word-of-mouth.

However, an unconditional guarantee can sometimes

hinder marketing efforts. With its implication that fail-

(15) ure is possible, the guarantee may, paradoxically, cause

clients to doubt the service firm’s ability to deliver the

promised level of service. It may conflict with a firm’s

desire to appear sophisticated, or may even suggest that

a firm is begging for business. In legal and health care

(20) services, it may mislead clients by suggesting that law-

suits or medical procedures will have guaranteed out-

comes. Indeed, professional service firms with outstandin

reputations and performance to match have little to gain

from offering unconditional guarantees. And any firm

(25) that implements an unconditional guarantee without

undertaking a commensurate commitment to quality of

service is merely employing a potentially costly

marketing gimmick.

The primary function of the passage as a whole is to______

A.account for the popularity of a practice

B.evaluate the utility of a practice

C.demonstrate how to institute a practice

D.weigh the ethics of using a strategy

E.explain the reasons for pursuing a strategy

Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized training. Ideally, therefore, the choice of an

1should be made even before choice of a curriculum in high school. Actually,2, most people make

several job choices during their working lives,3because of economic and industrial changes and partly

to improve4position. The"one perfect job" does not exist. Young people should5enter into a broad

flexible training program that will6them for a field of work rather than for a single7.

Unfortunately many young people have to make career plans8benefit of help from a competent

vocational counselor or psychologist. Knowing9about the occupational world, or themselves for that

matter, they choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss10. Some drift from job to job. Others11to work

in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.

One common mistake is choosing an occupation for12real or imagined prestige (声望). Too many

high-school students - or their parents for them - choose the professional field,13both the relatively

small percentage of workers in the professions and the extremely high educational and personal14. The

imagined or real prestige of a profession or a White-collar job is15good reason for choosing it as life's

work.16, these occupations are not always well paid. Since a large percentage of jobs are in mechanical

and manual work, the17of young people should give serious18to these fields.

Before making an occupational choice, a person should have a general idea of what he wants19life

and how hard he is willing to work to get it. Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual

satisfaction. Some want security; others are willing to take20for financial gain. Each occupational choice

has its demands as well as its rewards.

Section C(题干) Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage. That people often experience trouble sleeping in a different bed in unfamiliar surroundings is a phenomenon known as the “first-night” effect. If a person stays in the same room the following night they tend to sleep more soundly. Yuka Sasaki and her colleagues at Brown University set out to investigate the origins of this effect. Dr. Sasaki knew the first-night effect probably has something to do with how humans evolved. The puzzle was what benefit would be gained from it when performance might be affected the following day. She also knew from previous work conducted on birds and dolphins that these animals put half of their brains to sleep at a time so that they can rest while remaining alert enough to avoid predators (捕食者). This led her to wonder if people might be doing the same thing. To take a closer look, her team studied 35 healthy people as they slept in the unfamiliar environment of the university’s Department of Psychological Sciences. The participants each slept in the department for two nights and were carefully monitored with techniques that looked at the activity of their brains. Dr. Sasaki found, as expected, the participants slept less well on their first night than they did on their second, taking more than twice as long to fall asleep and sleeping less overall. During deep sleep, the participants’ brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dolphins. On the first night only, the left hemispheres (半球) of their brains did not sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did. Curious if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake to process information detected in the surrounding environment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix of regularly timed beeps (蜂鸣声) of the same tone and irregular beeps of a different tone during the night. She worked out that, if the left hemisphere was staying alert to keep guard in a strange environment, then it would react to the irregular beeps by stirring people from sleep and would ignore the regularly timed ones. This is precisely what she found. What did researchers find puzzling about the first-night effect? A. To what extent it can trouble people.

B.What role it has played in evolution.

C. What circumstances may trigger it.

D.In what way it can be beneficial.

What do we learn about Dr. Yuka Sasaki doing her research?A.She found birds and dolphins remain alert while asleep.

B.She found birds and dolphins sleep in much the same way.

C.She got some idea from previous studies on birds and dolphins

D.She conducted studies on birds’ and dolphins’ sleeping patterns.

What did Dr. Sasaki do when re-running her experiment?A.She analyzed the negative effect of irregular tones on brains.

B.She recorded participants’ adaptation to changed environment.

C.She exposed her participants to two different stimuli.

D.She compared the responses of different participants.

What did Dr. Sasaki find about the participants in her experiment?A.They tended to enjoy certain tones more than others.

B.They tended to perceive irregular beeps as a threat.

C.They felt sleepy when exposed to regular beeps.

D.They differed in their tolerance of irregular tones.

What did Dr. Sasaki do when she first did her experiment?A.She monitored the brain activity of participants sleeping in a new environment.

B.She recruited 35 participants from her Department of Psychological Sciences.

C.She studied the differences between the two sides of participants’ brains.

D.She tested her findings about birds and dolphins on human subjects.

No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the U.S.A.There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 144 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world.Disting uished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.

As in other democratic countries American newspapers ca n be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻)or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers dr ew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.
