Q2 Para. 3. These were the anti-monarchy campaigners of Republic. Like thousands of people
, they will be spending Sunday afternoon by the Thames as the royal barge leads a flotilla of boats downstream to mark 60 years of Elizabeth II’s reign. Like many of the spectators, they will be hoping the Queen may just catch sight of them, and that maybe they might even be on telly. For this group, however, the TV coverage is particularly urgent. There are those who point with alarm at Americans' relative lack of interest in the world'
s most popular games, soccer, a sport many feel has important advantages over football and baseball. Football and baseball of their very nature prevent mass participation; their popularity must therefore bear some of the responsibility for turning America into a nation of spectators. The violence of football makes necessary specialized conditioning and elaborate equipment if injury is to be avoided; even so there are crippling accidents and deaths each year. Baseball (hardball, that is) is so difficult that few can participate; throwing a ball demands special talents and training, while hitting is also difficult that a game with unskillful players is hardly worth the bother. Soccer, on the other hand, is a game anyone can play and enjoy.

Since soccer's superiority in encouraging active participation is so obvious, and since soccer's ability to arouse intense feeling of identification among spectators is at least equal to football's, why has it failed to become a major sport on the professional and college level? Soccer's worldwide popularity may be just what is keeping it from becoming popular. Baseball is also an international sport, played in Canada, Latin America, Japan, Korea and, in a minor way, Europe. There are professional leagues in the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Japan, but about all this the American public neither knows nor cares. Spectators here are interested only when American teams play other American teams. The major league baseball teams from Toronto and Montreal hardly destroy this generalization.

Relatively, the Americans are not interested in ______.

A.baseball

B.football

C.soccer

D.basketball

听力原文: (32)I am always amazed when I hear people saying that sport creates goodwill between the nations, and that if only the common peoples of the world could meet one another at football or cricket, they would have no inclination to meet on the battlefield. Even if one didn't know from concrete examples (the 1936 Olympic Games, for instance) that international sporting contests lead to hatred, one could deduce it from general principles.

Nearly all the sports nowadays are competitive. (33)You play to win, and the game has little meaning unless you do your utmost to win. On the village green, where you pick up sides and no feeling of local patriotism is involved, it is possible to play simply for the fun and exercise: but as soon as the question of prestige arises, (34) s soon as you feel that you and some larger unit will be disgraced if you lose, the most savage combative instincts are aroused. Anyone who has played even in a school football match knows this. At the international level, sport is frankly mimic warfare. (35)But the significant thing is not the behavior. of the players but the attitude of the spectators: and, behind the spectators, of the nations who work themselves into furies over these absurd contests, and seriously believe—at any rate for short periods that running, jumping and kicking a ball are tests of national virtue.

(33)

A.People enjoy sport.

B.There are general principles governing sport.

C.Sport makes war less likely.

D.Sport is enjoyed by common people.
