One morning I was walking in the forest and suddenly saw a lion hidden in the grass, less than three metres away. With a terrible roar(吼叫), he leaped(跳跃)toward me. I aimed my gun at it and shot. But I had no practice in shooting at moving objects at such a short distance. I didn't hit him. Only by the grace(恩典)of God, the lion made such a long leap that he went flying over my head and landed five metres away from me. Just then another hunter came running and the lion quickly ran away from me.
I returned to the camp and began to practise shooting at moving objects at short distances. It was going well and I was anxious to find some animal as my target. What I saw later was much dreadful and made me decide to give up hunting. I looked up over the fence, and there at the edge of the forest was the same lion. The lion was practicing short jumps.

M: Yes, certainly. I came to India a year ago to have a better understanding of the country. After I arrived, I had to find a place where I could live and write. After some months I settled down happily in this village because it is a little cooler.
W: Is the experience in this country so important to you that you came all the way from the United States?
M: Well, that's also the question that the villagers ask me. Why do I isolate myself from the outside world in this remote village, like a retired old man? I am no longer working as a political journalist because my ideas have changed. I've come to believe that what is happening in the Third Word is more important than anything else. I want to understand how three quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect the rest of the world.
W: I must say I find your view on this issue very convincing. I' m sure when you go back to your own country you'll find your stay here very rewarding.

I kept smiling at him, now aware of him as a person and not just a jailer. And his looking at me seemed to have a new dimension too. "Do you have kids?" he asked. "Yes, here, here." I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures .of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes rifled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the jail, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.
My life was saved by a smile. Yes, the smile — the unaffected, unplanned, natural connection between people. I really believe that if that part of you and that part of me could recognize each other, we wouldn't be enemies. We couldn't have hate or envy or fear.
