Joe liked hunting very much. Last month he came back from Africa and said that he would no
t go hunting any longer. He told me his experience as follows(如下).

One morning I was walking in the forest and suddenly saw a lion hidden in the grass, less than three metres away. With a terrible roar(吼叫), he leaped(跳跃)toward me. I aimed my gun at it and shot. But I had no practice in shooting at moving objects at such a short distance. I didn't hit him. Only by the grace(恩典)of God, the lion made such a long leap that he went flying over my head and landed five metres away from me. Just then another hunter came running and the lion quickly ran away from me.

I returned to the camp and began to practise shooting at moving objects at short distances. It was going well and I was anxious to find some animal as my target. What I saw later was much dreadful and made me decide to give up hunting. I looked up over the fence, and there at the edge of the forest was the same lion. The lion was practicing short jumps.

Joe came back from Africa and decided to give up hunting because ______.

A.hunting in Africa was terrible

B.he had been hunting for a long time

C.he had been hunting for a short time

D.he had had a terrible experience

My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it and I washe
d a lot of things. Everything worked well, but I found one of my husband's socks missing. I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn't find it anywhere. The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day. When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar! They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this. I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and I continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more. Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too! “Good heavens” I said. “Will someone please tell me what is so funny” “Oh, God, ”said the teacher. “You have a brown sock to the back of your skirt! ” So that's how I found my husband's missing sock. “Oh, well, ” I said to the class. “Let's just say you have had an unforgettable lesson on static (静止的) electricity. ”

听力原文:W: Dr. Eric, you were a political journalist in America and I was told that you'
ve chosen to live here, a mountain village like this in the Himalayan Community. Could you tell me why you came to India and settled down here?

M: Yes, certainly. I came to India a year ago to have a better understanding of the country. After I arrived, I had to find a place where I could live and write. After some months I settled down happily in this village because it is a little cooler.

W: Is the experience in this country so important to you that you came all the way from the United States?

M: Well, that's also the question that the villagers ask me. Why do I isolate myself from the outside world in this remote village, like a retired old man? I am no longer working as a political journalist because my ideas have changed. I've come to believe that what is happening in the Third Word is more important than anything else. I want to understand how three quarters of the world's people live, and how their future might affect the rest of the world.

W: I must say I find your view on this issue very convincing. I' m sure when you go back to your own country you'll find your stay here very rewarding.

When did Dr. Eric arrive in India?

A.Several weeks ago.

B.Several months ago.

C.A year ago.

D.Two years ago.

I was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I fumbled in my pockets to
sec if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches, they had taken those. I looked through the bars at my jailer. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him ,Have you got a light?" He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes inadvertently locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don't know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness, perhaps it 'was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn't want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and generated a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.

I kept smiling at him, now aware of him as a person and not just a jailer. And his looking at me seemed to have a new dimension too. "Do you have kids?" he asked. "Yes, here, here." I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures .of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes rifled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the jail, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.

My life was saved by a smile. Yes, the smile — the unaffected, unplanned, natural connection between people. I really believe that if that part of you and that part of me could recognize each other, we wouldn't be enemies. We couldn't have hate or envy or fear.

The word "fumble" in paragraph 1 means ______.

A.shake

B.search

C.hide

D.find
