The stranger could not have been more than twenty-five years of age, and was a little abov

e the ordinary: height; had he been a single hair's breadth taller, the matchless symmetry of his form. would have been destroyed. His unclad limbs were beautifully formed; whilst the elegant outline of his figure, together with his beardless cheeks, might have entitled him to the distinction of standing for the statue of the Polynesian Apollo; and indeed the oval of his countenance and the regularity of every feature reminded me of an antique bust. But the marble repose of. art was supplied by a warmth and liveliness of expression only to be seen in the South Sea Islander under the most favorable developments of nature. The hair of Marnoo was a rich curling brown, and twined about his temples and neck in little close curling ringlet, which danced up and down continually when he was animated in conversation. His cheek was of a feminine softness, and his face was free from the least blemish of tattooing, although the rest of his body was drawn all over with fanciful figures, which--like the unconnected sketching usual among these natives--appeared to have been executed in conformity with some general design.

The tattooing on his back in particular attracted my attention. The artist employed must indeed have excelled in his profession. Traced along the course of the spine was accurately delineated the slender, tapering, and diamond-checkered shaft of the beautiful "artu" tree. Branching from the stem on each side, and disposed alternately, were the graceful branches drooping with leaves all correctly drawn, and elaborately finished. In- deed, this piece of tattooing was the best specimen of the Fine Arts I had yet seen in Typee. A rear view of the stranger might have suggested the idea of a spreading vine tacked against an infinite variety of figures; every one of which, however, appeared to have reference to the general effect sought to be produced. The tattooing I have described was of the brightest blue, and when contrasted with the light olive-color of the skin, produced a unique and even elegant effect. A slight girdle of white tappa, scarcely two inches in width, but hanging before and behind in spreading tassels, composed the entire costume of the stranger.

He advanced surrounded by the islanders, carrying under one arm a small roll of the native cloth, and grasping in his other hand a long and richly decorated spear. His mariner was that of a traveler conscious that he is approaching a comfortable stage in his journey. Every moment he turned good-humoredly to the throng around him, and gave some dashing sort of reply to their incessant queries, which appeared to convulse them with uncontrolled mirth. (457)

Topping the class academically was certainly an advantage. Studying was a breeze for Nigel. The

reward was certainly incomparable to the little effort that he had to put it. It began when he was selected

to help the teachers in the computer laboratories.

The peak of his school career came not when he topped the school but when he was selected for the

nationwide competition.Unlike everyone else, Nigel wanted to join the contest because he liked playing

with the Lego sets and making something out of them. Nigel spent the next two months rebuilding the

robot. It was during the time that Nigel found out about the prizes for the competition as well as another

competitor, Alicia, from a neighboring school. His early intentions were forgotten. Getting the

thousand-dollar prize was more important than anything else. Nigel decided to befriend Alicia.Unaware

of his intentions, she told him all about the robot that she had been building for the competition. He even

helped her to put the finishing touches to her robot. He was glad with the way things had progressed. His

robot looked even better than  Alicia's and it was able to bounce a ball with its arm , something Alicia

had failed to do.

On the day of the competition, he saw Alicia. Everything dawned on her the minute she saw him

among the competition. She stared at him, puzzled at rirst, then angry and finally a look of helplessness

came over her.

The flashbulbs of the camera exploded in Nigel's face. The robot had performed actions so unique

and different that the specialists' judgments were the same. Nigel was so personal with himself that he

did not even notice the girl standing a few feet away from him. Without her,he would never have won the

competition.

I have been very lucky to have won the Noble Prize twice.  It is, of course, very exciting to have such

an important recognition of my work, but the real pleasure was in the work itself. Scientific research is like an exploration of a voyage of discovery. You are continually trying out new things that have not beendone before.  Many of them will lead nowhere and you have to try something different, but sometimes an

experiment does work and tells you something new and that is really exciting.  However small the new

finding may be, it is great to think "I am the only person who knows this" and then you will have the fun of

thinking what this finding will lead to and deciding what will be the next experiment. One of the best things about scientific research is that you are always doing something different and it is never boring. There are

good times when things  go well and bad times when they don't. Some people get discouraged at the

difficult times but when I have a failure, my policy has always been not to worry but to start planning the

nextexperiment, which is always fun.

It is very exciting to make a new discovery. Some people will do the strangest things for this

excitement, such as going round the world in a balloon or walking to the North Pole. There are not many

new places to explore but there is a lot of new information to be discovered in science and a journey into

this unknown area can be much more worthwhile and just as exciting.

I'm sometimes asked, "What do you have to do to win a Noble Prize?" My answer is, "I don't know.

I have never tried. " But I know of one way not to win. There are some people whose main reason for

doing science is to win prizes and they are always thinking about how to do it. Such people don't succeed. To do good science you must be interested in it and enjoy doing experiments and thinking out problems.

And, of course, you must be prepared to work hard and not to be too discouraged by failures.

1. In the writer's eyes his greatest pleasure in all his lifetime is____.

A. to win the Nobel Prize for the first time

B. to be awarded the Nobel Prize for the second time

C. in the work itself

D. to have a much more important recogniition of his work

2. Why did the writer think scientific research to be one of the best things?

A. You will be able to win the Nobel Prize through the scientific research.

B. You can make as much money as possible by doing the scientific research.

C. You may continue doing with something different and exciting, and so you can never be

tired of doing the scientific research.

D. You can get much more chances of promotion(晋级) by making the scientific research.

3. What would the writer do when he had a failure?

A. He would forget this failure and start the next experiment.

B. He used to be womed about it for several days and never forget it.

C. He always gave up his study as the result of the failure.

D. He used to think out the reasons and then continue to do it again.

Medicine Award Kicks off Nobel

Prize Announcements

Two scientists who have won praise for research into the growth of cancer cells could be can-didates for the Nobel Prize in medicine when the 2008 winners are presented on Monday, kicking off six days of Nobel announcements.

Australian-born U. S. citizen Elizabeth Blackburn and American Carol Greider have already won a series of medical honors for their enzyme research and experts say they could be among the front-runners for a Nobel.

Only seven women have won the medicine prize since the first Nobel Prizes were handed out in 1901. The last female winner was U. S. researcher Linda Buck in 2004,who shared the prizewith Richard Axel.

Among the pair&39;s possible rivals are Frenchman Pierre Chambon and Americans Ronald Evans arid Elwood Jensen, who opened up the field of studying proteins called nuclear hormone re-ceptors.

As usual, the award committee is giving no hints about who is in the running before presen-ting its decision in a news conference at Stockholm&39;s Karolinska Institute.

Alfred Nobel, the Swede who invented dynamite, established the prizes in his will in the cat-egories of medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace. The economics prize is technicallynot a Nobel but a 1968 creation of Sweden&39;s central bank.

Nobel left few instructions on how to select winners, but medicine winners are typically awar-ded for a specific breakthrough rather than a body of research.

Hans Jornvall, secretary of the medicine prize committee, said the 10 million kronor (US $1.3 million) prize encourages groundbreaking research but he did not think winning it was the primary goal for scientists.

"&39; Individual researchers probably don&39;t look at themselves as potential Nobel Prize winners when they&39;re at work," Jornvall told The Associated Press. "They get their kicks from their re-search and their interest in how life functions. "

In 2006.Blackburn, of the University of California, San Francisco, and Greider, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, shared the Lasker prize for basic medical research with Jack Szostak of Harvard Medical School. Their work set the stage for research suggesting that cancel ceils use telomerase to sustain their uncontrolled growth.

Who is NOT a likely candidate for this year‘s Nobel Prize in medicine? 查看材料

A.Pierre Chambon

B.Linda Buck

C.Carol Greider

D.Elizabeth Blackburn
