Reading Comprehension: I Americans generally consi...

Reading Comprehension: I Americans generally consider themselves to be frank, open, and direct in their dealings with other people. In their daily conversation, they may chat with each other in a more direct way. “Let’s lay our cards on the table,” they say. Or, “Let’s stop playing games and get to the point.” Unlike statements from other nations, these and many other phrases show the Americans’ idea that people should clearly state what they think about and what they want. Americans tend to believe that disagreements are best settled by means of long discussions among the people involved. If I dislike something you are doing, I should tell you about it directly so you will know, clearly and from me personally, how I feel about it. They do not prefer to hide their feelings, which may make themselves uneasy. For them, bringing in other people to solve the problem is regarded as somewhat strange. And the former will be looked upon as one who is not brave enough to speak directly to someone else. Americans will often speak openly and directly to others about things they dislike. They will try to do so in a manner they call “constructive”, that is, a manner which the other person will not find offensive or unacceptable. If they do not speak openly about what is in their minds, they will often express their meanings in nonverbal ways (without words, but through facial expressions, body positions, and gestures). They believe it is also a good way to show their feelings. Americans are not taught, as people in many Asian countries are, that they should hide their feelings. Their words, the tone of their voices, or their facial expressions will usually reveal when they are feeling angry, unhappy, confused, or happy and satisfied. 1. According to the passage, ______________.

A、Americans don’t state clearly what they think and want

B、Americans use body language to defend other people

C、Americans seldom speak openly

D、Americans state clearly what they want

Historically, although the children of immigrants may have grown up bilingual and bicultur
al, many did not pass on much of their parents' language or culture to their own children. Thus, many grandchildren of immigrants do not speak the language of the old country and are "American" by culture. However, in some parts of the country with established communities that share a common language or culture, bilingualism and biculturalism continue. This is particularly true in communities where new immigrants are still arriving. In general, cultural pluralism (多元化) is more accepted in the United States today than it was in the first half of the 20th century, and many of the school systems have developed bilingual programs and multicultural curricula.

At the close of the 20th century, there seemed to be a rise in the consciousness of ethnic groups around the world, and a sense of pride in what makes them unique. This occurs in the United States among many different groups, and in some cases it has resulted in new names to symbolize each group's identity. In the United States, people have become very sensitive to the language used to describe these groups, and they try to be "politically correct" (P. C. ). For example, many black Americans, particularly young people, prefer the term African-American instead of black, to identify with their African heritage. Some Spanish speakers prefer to be called Latinos (referring to Latin America) instead of Hispanics, while others prefer to be identified by their country of origin (Cuban-American or Cuban, Chicano, Mexican-American or Mexican, and so on).

In spite of some very important differences, however, there is still a tie that binds Americans together. That tie is a sense of national identity—of "being an American". Incidentally, when citizens of the United States refer to themselves as Americans, they have no intention of excluding people from Latin American countries. There is no word such as United Statesians in the English language, so people call themselves Americans. Thus, what is really a language problem has sometimes caused misunderstandings. Although citizens of Latin American countries may call the people in the United States North Americans, to most people in the United States this makes no sense either, because the term North Americans refer to Canadians and Mexicans as well as citizens of the United States. The word American, then, will be used in this text as the adjective and nationality for the people who live in the United States of America.

According to the passage, today many grandchildren of immigrants ______ .

A.don't like their old language and culture

B.don't speak English and reject American culture

C.only speak English and are "American" by culture

D.only live in established communities where new immigrants are still arriving

A great difference between American social customs and those of other countries is the way
in which names are used. Americans have little concern for "rank", especially socially. (76) Most Americans do not want to be treated in any especially respectful way because of their age or social rank; it makes them feel uncomfortable. Many Americans even find the terms "Mr. ", "Mrs." or "Miss." too formal. People of all ages may prefer to be called by their first names. "Don't call me Mrs. Smith, just call me Sally." Using only first names usually indicates friendliness and acceptance. However, if you do not feel comfortable using only first names, it is quite acceptable to be more formal. Just smile and say that after a while you will use first names but you are accustomed to being more formal when you first meet someone.

Very often, introductions are made using both first and last names: "Mary Smith, this is John Jones." In this situation you are free to decide whether to call the lady "Mary" or "Miss Smith". Sometimes both of you will begin a conversation using last names, and after a while one or both of you may begin using first names instead. You have a choice: if you don't want to use first names so quickly, no one will think it impolite if you continue according to your own custom.

In the first paragraph the author tells us that ______.

A.Americans do not talk about rank, especially socially

B.Americans feel uncomfortable when talking about rank

C.Americans take interests in social customs

D.Americans don't care much about social rank
