SECTION B PASSAGES
Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
听力原文: It is a dark stormy night when suddenly the phone rings. I casually answer the telephone. It is my older sister informing me that our mother is in the hospital. She is going to need an emergency brain transplant. It takes me just a moment to drop everything I am doing and rush to the hospital. When I arrive I see my father and sister in the waiting room casually enjoying their conversation. I am amazed they could have such high spirits at such a time. As I begin to confront them on this, they inform. me that this is merely a routine brain transplant. They reinforce that very few die from the actual transplant. I become immediately relieved as a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders. Issues of transplants, vaccines, and medicine are such that, whether anyone realizes it, they are becoming a social concern that does affect each of us. Nearly each and every one of us today has received vaccine shots. We have all used medications. We have all heard of transplant technology. This above example I have used is farfetched. Brain transplants are not an everyday occurrence. They are not yet, at least. However, kidney and heart transplants are beginning to become a more and more common every day. Who knows what is possible with the proper research.
Why did the speaker drop everything at the time?
A.Because she received a telephone call at midnight.
B.Because her mother was sent to a hospital.
C.Because her older sister was seriously ill.
D.Because her father was sent to a hospital.

Smart Exercise
Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr.
Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says: "While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can literally cause physical changes in the brain."
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician (儿科医师) , believes in the importance of exercise.
She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory.
In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning," says Margaret.
Older people can beef up their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants, exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain"s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.
Research by Dr. Cameron seems to suggest that exercise can __________. 查看材料
A.generate new blood vessels
B.change the way a person thinks
C.promote brain development
D.divert one"s attention

听力原文: During this century, archaeologists have discovered that the trees can be a valuable tool for measuring time. In scientific terms, this method is called dendrochronology. Dendrochronology is based on the scientific discovery that each year a tree grows a new layer of wood. When you cut down a tree, for example, you can see and count the layers of concentric circles. These circles will reveal a great deal of information. The layers vary in color and in thickness. These variations are a result of differing climate conditions from year to year that affect the growth of the annual rings. Cold weather, for example, creates thinner and lighter rings while hot weather produces thicker and darker rings. All trees that grow in the same region will have roughly the same pattern of annual rings, and this can be used as a source of comparison and measurement.
Early in this century, archaeologists began using the rings to date ruined structures and figures built in the southwestern United States. They did this by comparing the rings of the wood found in the ruins with the rings of recently cut trees. Slowly but surely, the system was extended backwards in time to measure older ruins. The heavy forestry of the United States, coupled with the relative youth. Of its history, led to a fairly uncomplicated study. Eventually, dendrochronology produced an accurate time and weather record for the American southwest that extended over 2,000 years.
What happens to trees each year?
A.Their rings get thinner and thinner.
B.They add a ring of wood.
C.Their rings get darker in color.
D.They become more valuable.

One day she was asked to help raise money for the base for the Statue of Liberty that was to be placed on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. Famous writers were asked to contribute pieces from their writings to be sold to the public. Emma agreed to help with the project. She decided to write a poem about the statue itself.
