听力原文: The men who write TV Westerns would be hard put to create a character as fabulous as Charles Marion Russell. He was a painter, sculptor, and professional cowboy. He lived the life of a cowhand in the old West during the feverish days of fast horses and faster guns. At the same time he created realistic images of the West in bronze and on canvas.

Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1864. He may have inherited his artistic talent from his mother, who was an accomplished amateur painter. When Russell was 15, his parents finally yielded to his craving for the West and allowed him to go to a ranch in Montana.

When Russell arrived there, the few white men in Montana were mostly miners and cattlemen. The Indians--Sioux and Cheyenne--still had vivid memories of the Sioux victory over Custer in 1876.

Russell sketched what he saw: cowhands, Indians, homesteaders, horses, buffaloes, and wolves. From on-the-spot sketches came most of his famous paintings and magnificent bronze statues.

听力原文: The Mother Goose Stories, so well known to children all over the world, are commonly said to have been written by a little old woman for her grandchildren. According to some people, she lived in Boston, and her real name was Elizabeth Vergoose. Her son-in-law, a printer named Thomas Fleet, was supposed to have published the famous stories and poems for small children in 1719. However, no copy of this book has ever been found, and most scholars doubt the troth of this story-- and doubt, moreover, that Mother Goose was ever a real parson. They point out that the name is a direct translation of the French "Mere I'Ohe." In 1679 the Frenchman Charles Perrault published the first book in which this name was used. The collection contains eight tales, including "Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderell," and "Puss in Boots." But Perrault did not originate these stories; they were already quite popular in his day, and he only collected them.

听力原文: It was in the sixteenth century that Geronimo Cardano, a physician of Padua, in northern Italy, proclaimed that deaf people could be taught to understand written combinations of symbols by associating them with the thing they represented. The first book on teaching sign language to deaf people that contained the manual alphabet was published in 1620 by Juan Pablo de Bonet.

In 1755 Abbe Charles Michel de L'Epee of Paris founded the first free school for deaf people. He taught that deaf people could develop communication with themselves and the hearing world through a system of conventional gestures, hand signs, and fingerspelling. He created and demonstrated a language of signs whereby each would be a symbol that suggested the concept desired.

The Abbe was apparently a very creative person, and the way he developed his sign language system was by first recognizing, then learning the signs that were already being used by a group of deaf people in Paris. To this knowledge he added his own creativeness that resulted in a signed version of spoken French. He paved the way for deaf people to have a more standardized language of their own -- one which would effectively bridge the gap between the hearing and non-hearing worlds.
