听力原文: In the old days, fresh food had to be eaten in the city no more than one or two days after it left the farm. If kept longer, it would spoil. One of the reasons behind it is that the air contains many living things that can harm our food. Some things, such as insects, can be seen by us. Others, like bacteria, can be seen only with a microscope.

All living things need water and man discovered that if this water is removed, the activity of the bacteria which causes food to go bad is prevented. In other words, we can protect some of our food by drying it. Besides, living things can only grow at certain temperatures, so we can also protect our food by heating or cooling it.

A New York man had an idea. He filled a wooden railroad car with tons of butter. The car was hooked to a train and pulled from New York to Boston. How could this be done? The butter was packed in ice, and twice during the trip more ice was added. This was the first refrigerator ear. As a matter of fact, People also used wooden boxes filled with ice to keep their food. Now we have mechanical refrigerator cars and mechanical refrigerators at home and stores and other places that need them.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

The word conservation has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy m such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and "inexhaustible". Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.

Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; timber was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has of us today.

For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone's daily life. To know about the water table in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds(流域) need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to yield their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, mature trees, because living space for most of man's fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.

According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that ______.

A.they had no idea of scientific forestry

B.they were not aware of the significance of nature study

C.they had little or no sense of environmental protection

D.they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials

Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: It was in the sixteenth century that Geronimo Cardano, a physician of Padua, in northern Italy, proclaimed that deaf people could be taught to understand written combinations of symbols by associating them with the thing they represented. The first book on teaching sign language to deaf people that contained the manual alphabet was published in 1620 by Juan Pablo de Bonet.

In 1755 Abbe Charles Michel de L'Epee of Paris founded the first free school for deaf people. He demonstrated that deaf people could develop communication with themselves and the hearing world through a system of conventional gestures, hand signs, and fingerspelling. He created and demonstrated a language of signs whereby each would be a symbol that suggested the concept desired.

The abbe was apparently a very creative person, and the way he developed his sign language system was by first recognizing, then learning the signs that were already being used by a group of deaf people in Paris. To this knowledge he added his own creativeness that resulted in a signed version of spoken French. He paved the way for deaf people to have a more standardized language of their own—one which would effectively bridge the gap between the hearing and non-hearing worlds.
