听力原文: New York City is the largest city in the United States. Unlike most American cities, which make up only a part of a particular county, New York City is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs. They are Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Manhattan, or New York County, is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of 59.5 sq km (23 sq mi). It is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Among the more famous of these are the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Citicorp Center. The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center were also among New York's famous skyscrapers until they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

Manhattan is the center of New York's cultural life. Numerous stage and motion picture theaters are located around Broadway in Midtown, which includes Times Square. The borough is the home of prominent music and dance organizations, such as the New York City Opera Company, the Metropolitan Opera Association, American Bailer Theatre, and the New York City Ballet.

In 1945, the United States Congress invited the United Nations to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York.

W: Yes, I'm going. I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Museum of Modern Art. There's a special show of 20th century American painters there. But, tell me, where did the nickname the Big Apple come from?

听力原文: A blonde lady walks into a New York City Bank and asks for the loan officer. She says she is going to Europe on business for 2 weeks and needs to borrow $ 5,000. The bank officer says he will need some kind of security for the loan, so the lady hands over the keys to a new, costly car parked in front of the bank. With all checked out, the bank agrees to accept the car as security for the loan. The loan officer drives the new car into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later the lady returns, repays the $ 5,000 she loaned, and $15.40 interest. The loan officer comes up to the lady and says, "We here at the bank are very happy to this deal, but while you were away, I checked you out, and I'm a little puzzled. I found out that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles me is why you would bother to borrow $ 5,000. 听力原文:M: Are you enjoying this tour?

W: Yes. It's my first time to visit New York.

M: Mine, too. New York is such a big and fascinating place.

W: Do you know how New York came to be the largest city in the United States?

M: Well, I suppose because it is one of the country's oldest cities. Besides that, it has a good harbor.

W: That's true, but there are other old port cities in the U.S. like Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In fact, in our early history, the first two played a much larger role than New York.

M: The big difference is that New York had a water route to travel to the interior. Other cities lacked that.

W: Do you mean a river?

M: Not a natural one; it was a canal. The Erie Canal, which was completed in 1823, connected New York's port to the Great Lakes in the Midwest.

W: So even before the railroad was invented, goods and supplies could travel via a water route from New York to the West.

M: Yes, and corn and wheat from that area could travel to New York for sale elsewhere.

W: So New York began to grow faster than the other cities.

M: Yes. In fact, within fifteen years after the canal opened in 1823. New York doubled in size. It became the trading capital of the U.S., attracting business, banking and industry, and providing work for thousands of new immigrants.

(23)

A.How New York became the largest city in the Unite States.

听力原文:M: What did you do last night?

W: I watched TV. There was a really good movie called Soylent Green.

M: Soylent Green?

W: Yeah. Charlton Heston was in it.

M: What's it about?

W: Oh, it's about life in New York in the year 2022.

M: I wonder if New York will still be here in 2022.

W: In this movie, in 2022...

M: Yeah?

W: ... New York has forty million people.

M: Ouch !

W: And twenty million of them are unemployed.

M: How many people live in New York now? About seven or eight million?

W: Yeah,I think that's right.

M: Mm, hmm. You know, if it's hard enough to find an apartment now in New York City, what's it going to be like in 2022?

W: Well, in this movie most people have no apartment. So thousands sleep on the steps of buildings. People who do have a place to live have to crawl over sleeping people to get inside. And there are shortages of everything. The soil is so polluted that nothing will grow. And the air is so polluted that they never see the sun. It's really awful.

M: I think I'm going to avoid going to New York City in the year 2022.

W: And there was this scene where the star, Charlton Heston, goes into a house where some very rich people live.

M: Uh - huh.

(23)

A.Went to a cinema.

B.Watched TV.

C.Washed clothes.

D.Went on street.

听力原文: Recently the Department of Planning of New York issued a report which laid bare a full scale of the city. In 1970, 18 percent of the city's population was foreign-born. By 1995, the figure had risen to 33 percent, and another 20 percent were the US-born offspring of immigrants. So immigrants and their children now form. a majority of the city's population.

Who are these New Yorkers? Why do they come here? Where are they from? OK, time to drop the "they". I'm one of the them. The last question at least is easy to answer: we come from everywhere. In the list of the top 20 source nations of those sending immigrants to New York between 1990 and 1994 are six countries in Asia, five in the Caribbean, four' in Latin America, three in Europe, plus Israel and former Soviet Union.

The mayor of New York once said, "Immigration continues to shape the unique character and drive the economic engine of New York City." He believes that immigrants are at the heart of what makes Now York great. [n Europe, by contrast, it is much more common to hear politicians worry about the loss of "unity" that immigration brings to their societies. In the quarter century' since 1970, the United States admitted about 125 million legal immigrants, and has absorbed them into its social structures with an ease beyond the imagination of other nations. Since these immigrants are purposeful and hard-working, they will help America to make a fresh start in the next century.

(33)

A.Ways to control New York's population.

B.The growth of New York's population.

C.The structure of New York's population.

D.Ways to increase New York's population.
