听力原文:The word "university" comes from the Latin word "universitas", meaning "the whole

听力原文: The word "university" comes from the Latin word "universitas", meaning "the whole". Later, in Latin legal language, "universitas" meant a society or corporation. In the Middle Ages, the word meant "an association of teachers and scholars". The origins of universities can be traced back to the 12th to 14th centuries. In the early 12th century, long before universities were organized in the modem sense, students gathered together for higher studies at certain centers of learning. The earliest centers in the Europe were at Bolonia in Italy, founded in 1088. Other early centers were set up in France, the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany from 1150 to 1386. The first universities in Britain were Oxford and Cambridge. They were established in 1185 and 1209 respectively. The famous London University was founded in 1836. This was followed by the foundation of several universities such as Manchester and Birmingham, which developed from provincial colleges. It was in the 1960's that the largest expansion of higher education took place in Britain. This expansion took 3 basic forms: existing universities were enlarged, new universities were developed from existing colleges and completely new universities were set up. In Britain, finance for universities comes from three sources: the first, and the largest source, is grants from the government, the second source is fees paid by students and the third one is private donations. All the British universities except cane receive some government funding. The exception is Buckingham, which is Britain's only independent university.

(26)

A.The university as a whole.

B.An association of teachers and scholars.

C.A society of legal professionals.

D.A business corporation.

There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory
can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. In contrast, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.

Henning studied how students who are leaning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.

To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound a like. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

Henning made the experiment in order to study __________.

A.how students remember English vocabulary by short-term memory

B.how students learn English vocabulary

C.how to develop students’ ability in English

D.how long information in short-term memory is kept

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.Information in short-term memory is different from that in long-term memory.

B.Long-term memory can be achieved only by training.

C.It is easier to test short-term memory than long-term memory.

D.Henning gave a separate test on vocabulary to his subjects.

From Henning’s results we can see that _________.A.beginners have difficulty distinguishing the pronunciation of words

B.advanced students remember words by their meaning

C.it is difficult to remember words that sound alike

D.it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning

The word “subject” in the passage means __________.A.the college course the students take

B.the theme of the listening material

C.a branch of knowledge studied

D.the student experimented on

The passage centres on __________.A.memory

B.two kinds of memory

C.short-term memory

D.an experiment on students

Harvard University is the oldest institute of higher learning in the United States. Founded 16 years after the arrival of Pilgrims at Plymouth, the university has grown from 9 students with a single master to the present enrollment of more than 18 000 students, including undergraduates and students in 10 graduate and professional schools. Over 14 000 people work at Harvard, including more than 2 000 faculties. Harvard has produced six presidents of the United States and 34 Nobel winners.

During its early years, Harvard offered a classic academic course based on the model of English universities, but consistent with the prevailing (流行的,盛行的;占优势的) Puritan philosophy. Although many of its early graduates became ministers in Puritan churches throughout New England, the university never formally belonged to a specific religious group.

Under President Pusey, Harvard started what was then the largest fund-raising campaign in the history of American higher education. It was 82.5 million dollars program for the university. The program increased faculty salaries, broadened students aid. created new professorships, and expanded Harvard's physical facilities.

Nell L. Rudenstine took office as Harvard's 26th president in 1991. As part of an overall effort to achieve greater coordination among the university's schools and faculties, Rudenstine encouraged academic planning and identified some of Harvard's main intellectual priorities. He also stressed the importance of the university's excellence in undergraduate education, the significance of keeping Harvard's door open to students from families of different economic backgrounds, the task of adapting the research university to an era of both rapid information growth and serious fund shortage.

What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The past and present size of Harvard University.

B.The development of Harvard University.

C.Some important presidents of Harvard University.

D.The religious influence on Harvard University.
