Sony's Vision For The Future As the television, communications and telecommunications indu

Sony's Vision For The Future

As the television, communications and telecommunications industries emerge, compatibility (兼容性) becomes a big issue for consumers. I think we should maintain open and compatible standards end create features particular to Sony, in other words, the system should be open but the services could be distinctive—like restaurants. The menus may be alike but the services are different.

Being president of Sony Corporation, I am often asked by this question: With digital cameras and digital camcorders (摄像机), what will be the future of digital imaging?

In 1997, optimists see non-traditional cameras—digital cameras— achieving sales of one million units in Japan. We are selling a new digital camera. Even though the price is quite high, it is selling well. And laser and ink-jet printers have improved greatly for printing colour pictures. But traditional pictures are still more popular than those from today's electronic cameras. Because of that, traditional cameras and digital cameras will co-exist for a long time.

If you want me to sum up Sony's vision for the next few years, all I can say is that there will be a big change. We can run our business at Sony based on today's technologies w which means the digitalisation of audio and video. But beyond 2000, there will be a big change and we should be prepared. This will be the network environment. So we are preparing for a big change in technologies and for a change in the way of thinking as well.

We celebrate our 50th anniversary this year (1997), and this coincides (与……一致) with what I call the transistor cycle, which has also lasted fifty years. Since we started using transistors in radios, the electronic industry has undergone a big evolution. But a new technology wave started with the invention of the microprocessor, about 14 or 15 years ago. My theory is that each business cycle lasts 50 years, with one cycle overlapping (重叠) another. The information age started 15 years ago with microprocessors and for another 10 years it will be in the takeoff stage. Like an airport, a 747 approaching the end of the runway is still gathering speed. So for information technology, for another five to seven years there will not be so much change, only increasing speed. But after that you fly. What that will mean, I cannot foresee. I'm just preparing for the takeoff stage while I'm president. The job of the next generation will be more important, I’m just in-between.

Why does the president of Sony Corporation mention restaurants in the first paragraph?

A.To praise Japanese restaurants for offering good services.

B.To explain that Japanese restaurants are distinctive.

C.To explain what has just been said.

D.To emphasize that restaurants are all alike.

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: Music Channel: Billy Corgan's Glass and the Machine of Gods, Soulstice MusicCreator, etc. For a better understanding of the inner workings of Screenblast, I spoke with Mike Arrieta, Vice President of Operations for Screenblast. He said: "What we've done at Screenblast and at Sony Pictures Digital is to create what we believe is the next generation broadband service. We've taken the best elements of Sony Pictures, Sony Electronics, what we've learned from other programming and have packaged together a service that enables users to participate in a way not possible before.”

"When we set out to create Screenblast, we wanted something that had a strategic vision, a reason for doing it. We found that being successful online involved using a two way medium. So we looked at our asset base and tried to figure out ways to put people in the driver's seat to participate."

"Our service has three core tenets to it and people participate within these in different ways. The first tenet is experiencing content, which is watching it (that could be professionally created content or content Created by the user). The second part of the service involves creation elements, where we offer everything

that a person needs to be an interactive participant or a creator. That includes giving the users tip s and inspiration on how to be creative. An example would be a show on top motion animation. And then we have calls to action that actually teach you how to make your own top motion animation."

Which of the following has nothing to do with Screen blast?

A.Sony Pictures.

B.Sony Animation.

C.Sony Electronics.

D.Sony Pictures Digital.

More than 200 organizations are preparing to bring their teams of robots to RoboCup 2003 n
ext month in Padua, Italy, an event where researchers test out the latest artificial intelligence techniques in games of football or rescue simulations.

Event organizers said last week that 183 teams from around the world, mostly from universities, have registered for rescue simulation competitions and various leagues of foot ball, while another 80 groups are to show off robots aimed at children. The event is expecting more than 50,000 visitors. While RoboCup has its lighter side, it is one of the most prominent events in the world for both artificial-intelligence researchers and for companies such as Honda and Sony wishing to show off their latest robotics technology.

In recent years, advances in robotics and computer technology have led to renewed interest in robots. Several companies have produced humanoid robots capable of walking on two legs, even up stairs or across uneven surfaces, while Sony has virtually single-handedly created a consumer-robot market with its Aibo dog, released in 1999.

Robot technologies such as vision and mobility systems have also made their way into the broader world of IT. Hewlett-Packard is even testing robots that could attend meetings in place of a human, in order to cut down on business travel.

Ahead of RoboCup, another European university has signed up to integrate its Aibo robots into their research curriculum. RoboCup's "four-legged league" uses Aibo robots, while the "humanoid league" pits two-legged robots such as Honda's AMmo against one another. The event says its ultimate goal is to develop a team of fully autonomous robots by the year 2050 that can win against .the human world soccer champion team.

According to the text, the purpose of RohoCup is______.

A.create a world ruled by robots

B.eliminate the need for human athletes

C.test out artificial intelligence technology

D.for scientists to get together and have a good time

Now that many media chieftains have fallen into disrepute and have left, those who are sti
ll in positions feel the need to take the problem seriously.

"CEOs were overturned as were some stocks." That is how AOL Time Warner entertainment group Chairman Jeff Bewkes summed it up. The era of the "imperial" (one-man rule) CEO has come to an end, MTV Networks Chairman Tom Freston added.

The two executives agreed that the industry's complex and often ill-fated megs mergers had proven that bigger is not necessarily better, no matter how big the reputations of the personalities behind them.

The continuing flameout of media executives who a few years ago were hailed as visionaries was active this month, and the industry's fears reached into the executive ranks of music, publishing and TV.

Technology visionary Steve Case left as chairman of AOL Time Warner, replaced by Chief Executive Richard Parsons. Top executives at Sony Music, MCA Records and Random House were booted. And Walter Isaacson, chairman of CNN Networks, left for a think tank.

This shows just how difficult it has become to find the right managers for the terribly altered media. "Many executives got caught up in the late 90's boom in the media industry and got ahead of themselves in strategic vision for their companies," said Mark May, of US investment firm Kaufman Bros. "It takes more than a couple of years for these companies to be ready for another visionary."

The collapse of the dotcom bubble, the ability of music fans to get songs free on the Internet, sagging bottom lines and intense competition among cable TV news networks are some developments that helped trip up media executives recently. But the urge to merge was one of their weakest points.

It is not that media companies should avoid all mergers, said Larry Haverty, managing director at State Street Research, a US investment management firm. They need acquisitions for growth. But making them work is a real challenge. They need to choose what pieces fit together and how much they are worth. They need to adjust quickly when technology and consumer habit trends shift. And, more than ever, they must be careful not to promise too much.

Sony Corp. of America Chairman Howard Stringer said that an executive today is "the rarest of senior entertainment executives, equally adept at business, management strategy and value creation, as well as a consummate(完美的) and proven developer of content, talent and ideas".

Both Jeff and Tom agree that

A.media chieftains are visionary and active.

B.media executives have big reputations and nice personalities.

C.the media industry should be cautious about merger.

D.the media industry is too complicated to handle.
