听力原文:We are rapidly nearing the end of this course in history of classical music. We ha

ve covered several centuries in a very short time. Much too short to do the music justice, of course, but then this is a survey course. From now until the end of this term, we will be talking about and listening to electronic music. You probably already know that it was in the 1950s that musical computers and synthesizers first appeared in universities. The first commercial synthesizers were sold about this time, too. The sophistication and complexity of these instruments has now increased to the point that they can produce almost any kind of sound. Some alarmists believe these new instruments will bring an end to classical music or that they already have. You know I don't share this view, though I agree we are in the midst of revolution in instrument design. This, however, is not the first such revolution in musical history and probably not the last one either. Remember we've already studied the similar case in the early 19th century when the piano replaced the harpsichord and modern brass and wind instruments came into being. One of the most important reasons for the great popularity of electronic instruments is, of course, their relatively low price. Well, just look at it, only about 400 dollars for a piano. Naturally this has done a lot to increase sales for electronic instruments, expecting them to completely replace acoustic instruments.

What is the speaker's main topic?

A.The replacement of the harpsichord by the piano.

B.The development of electronic musical instruments.

C.The relative costs of different types of musical instruments.

D.The performance of classical music on synthesizers.

听力原文: Yesterday we discussed the problem of rising prices, or in the economist's terms, inflation. We noted that, during periods of inflation, all prices and incomes do not rise at the same rate. Some incomes rise more slowly than the cost of living, and a few do not rise at all. Other incomes rise more rapidly than the cost of living.

We concluded that people with fixed incomes as, for example, the elderly who depend upon pensions, and people with slow-rising incomes as, for example, an employee with a salary agreed to in a long-term contract, will be most seriously affected by inflation. Please recall that while their dollar incomes stay the same, the cost of goods and services rises, and in effect, real income decreases, that is, they are able to purchase less with the same amount of money.

We also talked about the fact that stockholders and people with business interests and investments would probably benefit most from inflation, since high prices would increase sales receipts, and profits would more likely rise faster than the cost of living.

And now, before we begin today's lecture, are there any questions about the term inflation or any of the examples in our discussion so far?

(30)

A.An opening speech of a lecture.

B.The text of the economist's speech.

C.A discussion on inflation and investment.

D.The interpretation of the phrase "economic depression".

听力原文: We are now living in a world in which robots are taking over much of the work.Robots make our cars, fly our planes and work out wages.

But these robots are not mechanical men and women. They do not look like us.They are machines specially built to do some of the things that human beings can.

Although they may not look like us,robots need some human features in order to be able to do human work.First of all they need some kind of brain.Their "brain" is a computer, which has a memory to human member instructions and ability to control other equipment.Another essential feature of many robots is an arm that can do the kind of things that human beings can with their arms.One-armed robots are now coming into widespread use in industry. They are being used, for example,on car assembly lines.

The great advantage of robots over human workers is that they can work non-stop for long periods. They never get tired, and always work with the same accuracy. They can also work in conditions that humans could not bear.Last but not least,as more robots are built, their cost will come down.

Although robots are rapidly taking over many jobs in industry, they seem a long way from taking over in the home. The problem is that it would take a very complex and costly robot to perform. half the tasks involved in housework.

According to the speaker, what can the present-day robots do?

A.Drive cars.

B.Fly planes.

C.Pay wages.

D.Repair machines.

听力原文: Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in, or living in. a country and getting to know its citizens and their language, that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be different from the second-hand information gathered from other sources. How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different after all! Differences between peoples do, of course exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned, However this may be, at least, the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.

(30)

A.They will find out what its people like.

B.They will argue in favor of this country and the language.

C.They will know the country and its people better.

D.They will like its inhabitants and their language.
