听力原文: A good reader reads fast and understands most of what he or she reads. Although each person is different, most good readers share six characteristics.

First, most good readers read a great deal. They make time for reading and spend two full hours a day, three or four days a week, reading.

Second, Past readers look for the main ideas in their reading. They don't waste time and effort on unimportant details.

Third, good readers improve their comprehension ability by reading more and more difficult materials.

Fourth, fast readers plan their time for reading. Like students with assignments, good readers give themselves time limits, saying "I want to finish this book by tomorrow. How much time can 1 spend?"

Fifth, good readers set goals. To set a goal, they may read for fifteen minutes for quick understanding, then count the number of pages read and multiply by four. This gives them a number of pages to try to read each hour. Gradually, they increase these goals.

Lastly, fast readers concentrate. They do not let outside distractions or daydreams interfere with their reading.

(23)

A.A whole day.

B.Three or four full hours.

C.Six or eight full hours.

听力原文: "Go to the playground and have fun," parents will often say to their kids. But they should remember: playgrounds can be dangerous. Each year, about 200,000 children end up in hospital emergency rooms with playground injuries. Many injuries involve falls from too high equipment onto too hard surfaces. Nearly 70 percent of the injuries happen on public playgrounds.

Recent studies show they may be badly designed. Their protective surfaces are inadequate and their equipment is poorly maintained. Parents should make sure that the equipment on the playground is safe and that children are playing safely.

Last year the national program for playground safety gave the nation's playgrounds a grade of "C" for safety after visiting more than 3,000 playgrounds nationwide. Parents should watch closely. They should always be within shouting and running distance of their children.

Young children don't know the danger on the playground, so they may run in front of moving swings. They're also better at climbing up than getting down, so they may panic at the top of a ladder. It's important for children to know you're watching them. Once they feel a sense of security, that's when they can be creative.

(26)

A.Children don't get enough education in safety.

B.Children are keen on dangerous games.

C.The playgrounds are in poor condition.

D.The playgrounds are overcrowded.

听力原文:M: What are you doing?

W: I'm ordering some filing cabinets out of a catalog.

M: What do you need them for?

W: There's so much stuff piling up in my dormitory room. If I don't do something soon, I won't be able to move in there.

M: Do you usually order from a catalog?

W: Sometimes. Why?

M: Oh, it's just in the history class today we were talking about how the catalog sales business first got started in the US.

A Chicago retailer, Montgomery Ward started it in the late 1800s. It was really popular among farmers. It was difficult for them to make it to the big city stores so they ordered from catalogs.

W: Was Ward the only one in the business?

M: At first, but another person named Richard Sears started his own catalog after he heard how much money Ward was making.

W: What made them so popular?

M: Farmers trusted Ward and Sears for one thing. They delivered the products the farmers paid for and even refunded the price of things the farmers weren't satisfied with. The catalog became so popular that some country school teachers even used them as textbooks.

W: Textbooks?

M: Yeah, students practice spelling the names and adding up the prices of things in the catalogs.

W: Was everybody happy about it?

M: That's doubtful. It was said they drove some small store owners out of business. Sears and Ward sold stuff in such large quantities that they were able to undercut the prices at some small family owned stores.

(27)

A.The necessity to keep everything in place.

B.Catalogs used as textbooks by country school teachers.

C.Sears and Ward and catalog sale business.

D.The competition between small stores and catalog sale.
