I knew a man who collected English words. He lived in an upturned water tank in the middle
of the Australia desert. Unbelievably hot. He was the official town librarian of one of these ghost towns in the outback of Australia. It was founded in the 1890s. People turned up and hammered wooden pegs into the sand and laid out boulevards and avenues. They built a jail and a huge hotel. That% about all except that someone down south had it on his books that this was an official town, and he sent a library to it, 3,000 volumes and a sum of money as a salary for the librarian. This friend of mine, whose name was Roger, had been a no hoper, as they say, wandering about the outback of Australia. He somehow discovered that there was money to be there and, what is more, boxes of unopened books sitting in his deserted hotel. He turned up there, got the job, and settled down in the hotel, to begin with. The hotel did, actually, just function; that is, it had half a dozen guests a year who .would ride up on horseback, sleep on the floor for an evening, and there push off the next day. This was too much for Roger. It got in the way of his reading. So he took the immense water storage tank, rolled it a mile into the desert, canted his books out there and lived inside it — so, as he said, "I could get a habit of peace and quiet."

Words were a fascination for Roger, and he used to sit in his tank, just thinking about words. If there were a pause in the conversation he would look at you and ask some such question ass "Do you happen to know what 'transubtantiation' is? "If you said you knew, he was very cast down, because he wanted to tell you.

One of his regular visitors was the government officer who went by every six months. Roger would ask him if he knew what a word meant, and then he would have to admit that he didn't and Roger would be every pleased with himself. Taz, as his name was, got very fed up with this.

So, on one occasion, before he went, he spent an evening with the Oxford English Dictionary. He rode in, tied up his horse and went in to see Roger, and Roger said, "Do you happen to know what an 'embolism' is?' and Taz said; "No, I bloody don't." Then Taz asked him" Do you happen to know what a 'letoard' is?" Roger, was upset to be asked a question. He said: SA leotard? I think I saw the skin of one once. "And Taz said: "You bloody didn't. "SO Roger said: "Well, what is a leotard?' Taz said: "Urn not going to bloody tell you. ' He got on his horse and rode off and went to sleep in the desert five miles away.

Some time later he was suddenly woken up by a steely grasp on his coat. Hands picked him up bodily from the ground and held him in the air and shook him. He opened his eyes and it was Roger with his eyes glinting in the moonlight, staring at him and saying: "What’s a bloody leotard?"

The outback town was given a library because ______.

A.it was expanding rapidly

B.Roger was a collector of English words

C.a government official thought it necessary

D.the people of the town had requested one from, the government

Directions: There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five
ques- tions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Walking through the dry leaves on his way home, Pat thought of what a bad day in school it had been. But every day was a bad day for him; he and the school did not like each other. But now that he was in the forest, Pat began to feel more like his usual self. He stopped to look at the quick moving stream of water called the Totopotomy. This little river was named for a man Pat liked, Totopotomy chief of the friendly Paumunkey Indians. He had heard stories about boys caught by the Paumunkeys who, when they were free, did not want to go home. Pat could understand how they felt. They did not have to go to school; they lived in the fresh air, and went fishing and hunting. How wonderful that must be!

The gentle sounds of a bird singing could be heard through the trees. Pat looked up, and tried to make the same sound. Uncle Langloo had told him to try and learn the language of the birds, and he was trying. Pat wanted to be like his uncle in every way. Langloo Win- ston was a hunter who spent most of his time living with the Indians. He fished with them, talked with them, even dressed like them, and the Indians loved him.

When Pat reached home, a young slave named Caesar ran out to meet him. Pat gave him a friendly push, and both boys rolled in the red earth. Caesar's job was to serve Pat, but he was more friend than servant. Even as a boy, Pat Henry did not believe in such differences between men.

36. The Paumunkeys did all the following except ______.

A. not having to go to school

B. living in the fresh air

C. going fishing and hunting

D. not wanting to go home

听力原文:M:How are your new neighbors, Nancy?

W:They seem nice enough, but they have a son who's driving me crazy

M: What do you mean?

W: He comes home every night around 10 with his car windows rolled down and his radio blaring. It stops as soon as he turns the car off. But by then Brian and Lisa are wide awake.

M: Oh, no.

W: Oh, yes. Sometimes it takes us till midnight just to get them to settle down again.

M: Have you tried talking to them?

W: We haven't even really met them yet except to say a quick hallo. I hate to get off on the wrong foot.

M: You are not going to like them when you do meet them if you keep on simmering.

W: I know, but I feel stupid complaining. It's not as though he's blasting his stereo all night.

M: You said yourself it is driving you crazy.

W: Well, You know how early I have to get up to be here at the office, I'm just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids. They're so irritable when I get home in the afternoon.

M: Maybe you could go over there sometime with a little gift: a plant for the yard or something. Then you could ask their son whether they have any other children and they'll be sure to ask about yours.

W: Yeah, and then what?

M: Then you could mention that the hardest thing at this stage is getting your kids to go to sleep at night.

W: And keeping them in the asleep.

M: That's the idea. And you should do it soon. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to do politely.

Underline the errors and put the corrections in the blanks.(标红句子为无错误句,大家把改好的词写在答案区就可以了,忽略具体哪个行哪个词。) Last week I had a disagreement in a matter of principle with a man at work. When I got home, I gave my daughter a blow-by-blow account of the bust-up, expected her loyal support. Instead she rolled her eyes. “Poor X,” she said, sided with my adversary. “You can be very difficult,” she explained, “I don’t think you realize it.” She is right about the second point. I do not see myself as difficult—I am perfectly reasonable. To check this was the consensus view, the following morning I conducted a survey. I bearded first colleague I saw and demanded: “Am I difficult?” He looked uncomfortable at be put on the spot when he had barely put his coat off. “Yes,” he said. I asked three more people. All gave the same answer. To be difficult at work is not generally thought to be a good thing. On Amazon there are 1,387 titles on how to deal with difficult people with titles such as Since Strangling Isn’t an Option. I failed finding a single volume called What to Do When the Difficult Person Is Me or How to Be Difficult and Influence People. As a columnist, being difficult is part of the job—if you do not enjoy sometimes get up the noses of readers, you are too bland to be any good. Indeed, as a journalist, be personally difficult can serve you rather well.
