听力原文: In countless other ways, the people of the United States are indebted to the Mexicans who once lived in the old Southwest. There were only 75 thousand of them when Mexico ceded the region to the United States, and these were scattered from the Gulf Coast in the east to the shores of the Pacific in the west. They had lived in the borderlands since 1598, more than twenty years before the Pilgrims sailed for the New World. In the course of more than 250 years, they had left their mark on the land. Many of the western states in the United States still bear the lovely lyrical names the Mexican settlers first wrote upon their maps. So do countless rivers and mountains, and thousands of cities and towns. Through trial and error, the rugged Mexicans had learned to survive and proper in the dry, half-desert land. When English-speaking people poured into the region, the Spanish-speaking people shared their knowledge with the new settlers, making things much easier fro them. Settlers in other parts of the United States did not have this advantage.

What does the map mean?

A.He wonders what happened to Sam.

B.He went to visit Sam' s class.

C.Sam' s class is half over.

D.Sam wants to drop the class.

听力原文: People always seem to be looking for ways to get rich quickly. So when gold was discovered in California in the mid 1800's, hundreds and hundreds of people rushed in, hoping to get a part of the wealth. Today, gold in California continues to have as much of an appeal as it did over one hundred years ago. Modem prospectors in the form. of mining corporations have headed back to the same area to use new techniques for locating the gold that old time prospectors left behind. These modern prospectors, however, do not have some of the problems the old timers had. Anxious to seek a fast fortune, many of those early prospectors arrived before law and order were established. And they took full advantage of this situation by cheating and robbing each other. But not every one looking for gold in those days was greedy. Some people were generous and helpful. One such person was William Waldo. He established a relief committee that collected money and supplies to help save the lives of countless people who were caught in the mountains by early snowstorms before they even reached California.

(26)

A.Better land.

B.Quick wealth.

C.Modem equipment.

D.Stricter laws.

听力原文: W: Mr. Glieberman, do you see any change in the high rate of broken marriages?

M: The divorce rate is beginning to level off and probably will begin to drop in the next year or two, though not significantly. The tight economy has made it more difficult for troubled couples to handle all the costs associated with setting up separate households. Also, I believe there's a comeback of thought—after the turbulent '60s and '70s--that the family does have value. In the midst of change and family disintegration, people seem to have a greater desire now to create stability in their lives.

W: What is the divorce rate now?

M: About 1 in 3 marriages ends in divorce, a ratio far higher than it was 20 years ago when the philosophy was "We'll tough it out no matter what. Society demands that, for appearances' sake, we stay together."

Divorce no longer carries much disgrace. There's no way, for example, that Ronald Reagan, a divorced man, could have been elected President in 1960. And there are countless other divorced politicians who years ago would have been voted out of office if they had even considered a divorce, let alone gotten one.

The same was true in the corporate structure, where divorced people rarely moved up the executive ladder. Now corporations welcome a divorced man, because they can shift him around the country without worrying about relocating his family or making certain that they are happy.

(33)

A.Fall

B.Rise

C.V-shape

听力原文: Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior. in society, and was reading English literature.

At school he seemed only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprisingly brief and incomplete. Unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital ot Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with som other early American presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had nothing to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached Europe.

(30)

A.Washington had a strong interest in learning a wide range of subjects at school.

B.Washington was more interested in mathematics than in politics.

C.Washington did not like the formal education at his time.

D.Washington's lack of formal education put him at a great disadvantage in his late political life.

听力原文: The government of Pakistan says it now thinks that more than 38,000 people were
killed by the South Asian earthquake a week ago. The number injured has risen to more than 60,000. In some of the areas worst affected, heavy rain and strong winds again temporarily grounded helicopter flights. BBC correspondent Jonathan Head reports now from Muzaffarabad:

The earthquake struck rich and poor alike. This was a doctor's home in surgery. One week on his family are still retrieving what they can. It isn't much. But it's so much harder on the poor. In the hills outside Muzaffarabad a man complains all he's had to eat is biscuits. 14-year-old Javed took me onto the roof of what had been his house, now crushed to a few feet of rubble. "This earthquake killed my sister", he told me, "and my mother was badly injured". His home today, like countless others here, is a grimy camp.

B.60,000

C.68,000

D.98,000

听力原文: No living creature, plant or animal, can exist in complete isolation. An animal is bound to depend on other living creatures, ultimately plants, for its food supply; it must also depend upon the activities of plants for a continued oxygen supply for its respiration. Apart from these two basic relationships, it may be affected directly or indirectly in countless different ways by other plants and animals around it. Other animals prey on it or compete with it for the same food; plants may provide shelter, concealment or nesting material, and so on. Similarly, the animal will produce its own effects on the surrounding plants and animals: some it may cat or destroy, for others it will provide food; and through its contribution of manure it may influence the texture and fertility of the soil.

This dependence on other living things is not confined to animals. Though plants manufacture their own food, they are dependent on animal respiration for at least a part of the carbon dioxide which they use as raw material in this process. Moreover, despite the apparently peaceful relationships in plant communities, there is intense competition going on for water, nutrient salts, and above all, for light.

The whole complex of the plants and animals forming a community, together with all the interaction physical factors of the environment, really forms a single unit, which has been called an ecosystem. It will be seen that the final aim of ecology -- the complete understanding of ecosystems -- is an ideal one we can scarcely hope to attain. It is nevertheless an ideal well worth pursuing and valuable progress has been made towards it.

(33)

A.They eat or destroy plants.

B.They provide plants with continued oxygen supply.

C.Their manure is eaten by plants.

D.Their manure improves the quality of soil which plants live on.
