听力原文: There are two factors which determine an individual' s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. Sc, the second factor is what happens to the individual -- the sort of environment in which he is.

The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities.

Mark, on the other hand, was raised in the home of rich parents who had been to collage. He was read to as a child, sent to a good school, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Peter's score was 85,well below the level he might have attained if reared under average conditions. Mark's score was 125, twenty-five points above the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins would have tested at roughly the same level.

B.Lack of opportunity prevents the growth of intelligence.

听力原文: In the United States many parents teach their children at home by themselves. The U. S. Department of Education estimates there are 250,000 to 350,000 home-schooled children in the country.

The reasons of home-schooling vary widely. Children may be home-schooled because they are ill and cannot attend a normal school. Distance is the reason for children living on outback land or large farms. It may take hours to get to school and back home each day. Their parents think it inhumane to send their children to state boarding school. Some home schoolers think low of public school education which lacks of religious perspective. They want their children to learn not only traditional subject matter but strict religious teaching and a conservative political and social perspective. Other home-schoolers want to keep their children away from other children, because their family' s faith or lifestyle. is very different from that of those who attend the local school.

There are, of course, some drawbacks of home-schooling. Social isolation is the major problem. Children are naturally social creatures and love to form. friendship and learn in a group setting. Also, many home-schooled children may feel bored interacting with just their parents for many hours a day. And needless to say, not ail parents make good instructors.

(33)

A.215,000.00

B.Less than 250,000.

C.More than 350,000.

D.About 300,000.

听力原文: A new school year has begun in America. But some children do not go to school. Instead, they learn at home, usually with parents as teachers. Educational companies, libraries, school systems and the internet provide families with teaching material. Homeschooling is increasingly popular. Homeschooling groups estimate that two-million children, around two percent, learned at home in 1985. The government estimate was 2.5 million in 2001. Some parents choose homeschooling because of their religious beliefs. Others say it provides more time for the family to be together. Many parents also believe homeschooling avoids problems of a lot of traditional schools. One problem is classes with too many students.

Critics say children need to attend school with other children to help them learn things like social skills. They also say that me homeschooled children do not get a very good education.

All fifty states and the District of Columbia permit homeachcoling. Some, however, require more preparation of parents. Homeschooling is as old as the country. In farm areas, people often lived far from a school. So their parents had to teach them at home. In 1852, there were about 50,000 children studying at home, so the state of Massachusetts passed the first law to require all children to attend school and limited support was given to children in the farm areas.

(30)

A.Homeshcooling can provide more time for the families to get together.

B.Homeschooling solves the problem of congestion (用挤) in one class.

C.Homeschooling has a lot of organizations to provide teaching materials.

D.Parents have their own religious beliefs.
