Reading Comprehension(阅读理解) Passage 2 A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse. That is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 根据短文完成1-5题,在空格处填写正确选项的字母。 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very badly B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above

M: Hi. I have this cassette player here that I bought a few months ago, and it just ruined four of my favorite cassettes.

W: I'm sorry.

M: So, I'd like you to fix it or refund my money.

W: May I see your sales slip, please?

M: Yeah, here it is.

W: I'm sorry, sir. Your warranty was good for only six months. It expired ten days ago.

M: Well, what difference does ten days make? The machine was obviously defective when I bought it.

W: Well, the workers in our service center can look at it, but there will be a charge.

M: A charge? I thought you would fix it for free.

W: I'm sorry, sir. Your warranty has run out. There's nothing I can do for yon.

M: Well, you can bend the rule a little bit, can't you?

M: Yes. This is Herbert speaking. How can I help you?

W: Well, I have a slight problem here. I have been in Chemistry 302B class for a month, and today Prof. Smith told me I wasn't registered in his latest class list. I thought all the while I was registered in his class and this really comes as a surprise.

M: Well, why don't you give me your student ID and I'll just check to see if you are officially registered.

W: 39241.

M: Just a minute. And you are Alice Jones, right?

W: Yes, that's me.

M: Alice, the computer shows that you are registered in Chemistry 302A and that's Dr. Nelson's class. Perhaps you have mixed up the two.

W: Oh no, I thought I'd made a switch from Nelson to Smith. How did this confusion occur? I dropped Nelson's class and switched to Smith's in the first week. I still have the add/drop form. with me.

M: In that case, I suggest you come to the registration office with the add/drop form. and we'll try to sort it out for you. I don't rule out there could have been a mistake that occurred during the add/drop process.

W: I'll be there first thing in the morning to sort out this mess. You know, I wouldn't want to switch professors when I'm now half way through.

"I love you, Bob." "I love you, too, Nancy." It was 2 a.m. and I was hearing my parents' v
oices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs. Their loving words were sweet, touching— and surprising.

My parents married on September 14,1940, alter a brief dating. She was nearly 30 and knew it was time to 'start a family. The handsome, well-educated man wh0 came by the, office where she worked looked like a good bet. He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn't last long.

Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel; he hated the thought. He loved golf; she did not. He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the perceived shortcomings of their respective in-laws.

There was a hope that they would change once they retired, and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness. "I always thought we'd..." my mother would begin, before launching into a precise listing of my father's faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today. As he listened, my father would say angry threats and curses in a low voice.

It wasn't the happiest marriage, but as their 602 anniversary(纪念日)approached, my sister and I decided to throw a party. Sixty years was a long time, after alit why not try to make the best of things? We'd provide the cake, the balloons, the toasts, and they'd follow one rule: no fighting.

The agreement was honored. We had a wonderful day. When we thought back, we found it was an important celebration, because soon after, things began to change for my parents.

Bob married Nancy because of______.

A.her nice appearance

B.her good education

C.her romantic nature

What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher? I think the following would be gener
ally accepted.

First, the teacher s personality should be lively and attractive. This does not rule out people who are plain-looking, or even ugly, because many such people have great personal charm. But it does rule out such types as the over-excitable, sad, cold, and frustrated.

Secondly, it is not merely desirable but essential for a teacher to have a genuine capacity for sympathy, a capacity to understand the minds and feelings of other people, especially, since most teachers are school teachers, the minds and feelings of children. Closely related with this is the capacity to be tolerant not, indeed, of what is wrong, but of the weaknesses and immaturity of human nature which induce people, and again

especially children, to make mistakes.

Thirdly, I hold it essential for a teacher to be both intellectually and morally honest. This means that he will be aware of his intellectual strengths and limitations, and will have thought about and decided upon the moral principles by which his life shall be guided. There is no contradiction in my going on to say that a teacher should be a bit of an actor. That is part of the technique of teaching, which demands that every now and then a teacher should be able to put on an act to enliven a lesson, correct a fault, or award praise. Children, especially young children, live in a world that is rather larger than life.

A teacher must be capable of infinite patience. This, I may say, is largely a matter of self-discipline and self-training, for we are none of us born like that.

Finally, I think a teacher should have the kind of mind which always wants to go on learning. Teaching is a job at which one will never be perfect; there is always something more to learn about it. There are three principal objects of study: the subjects which the teacher is teaching; the methods by which the subjects can best be taught to the particular pupils in the classes he is teaching; and by far the most important the children, young people, or adults to whom the subjects are to be taught. The two fundamental principles of British education today are that education is education of the whole person, and that it is best acquired through full and active co-operation between two persons, the teacher and the learner.

When I heard that Mrs. Thatcher resigned, I called her. I wanted her to know that my heart
was with her, and that I thought England owed her a great debt and was going to miss her. I told her that the United States and many other countries would miss her as well. She was quite self- possessed, as always. She didn't hold any grudges (恶意). She just understood that this was the right thing to do.

For as long as I have known her, she has known her mind and spoken it clearly. It was one of the things that I respected her for at our first meeting, back in 1975. I had just left the governorship of California and was in London to make a speech, and she had just taken the leadership of the Conservative Party. Justin Dart, an American businessman, set up the meeting. He told me that he thought we had much in common. We were only supposed to (被期望) meet for a few minutes, but we talked for over an hour. She was warm and feminine, gracious and intelligent, it was clear to me that we were soulmates (意气相投的人)when it came to reducing government and expanding economic opportunity. At a reception that evening, an Englishman asked me what I thought of her. I said, "I think she' d make a magnificent Prime Minister. “He looked at me with mocking(愚弄)disdain (轻视)” My dear fellow, " he said, “a women Prime Minister?” I replied that England had once had a queen named Victoria who had done rather well.

A few years later, Mrs. Thatcher was Prime Minister -- and I had the chance to renew our friendship as the President. I admired greatly what she was doing in England to recover from the years of socialist rule because that's what the Labor Party is.

We were always comfortable with each other. Our first state dinner was for her, and so was our last, We still stalk and I think there has never been any feeling in our relationship that we will stop. I plan to see her soon in England, though not, she reminded me, again at 10 Downing Street. In 1983, when I was hosting the Economic Summit in Williamsburg, Va. , we had a dinner at the old British colonial governor's home. I thought it would be fun to tease her in my toast by saying, "Margaret, if some of your predecessor had been a little more clever, you would be hosting this dinner in Williamsburg. “I had gotten as far as saying”. . , a little more clever. . . "When she cut in and joked, "I know, I would be hosting this dinner in Williamsburg. "We all had a good laugh. At the dinner, everyone turned and looked at me. "Tell us about the American miracle, " said Helmut Kohl, the chancellor of West Germany. I launched into a variation of the speech I had made for years, about how excessive tax rates can take away the incentive to produce, and how cutting taxes can generate growth. It wasn't long before I read about a wave of tax cutting in other countries. But no one did more in this regard than Margaret Thatcher. I don't claim credit for convincing her of the merits of free enterprise. She was just as determined as I to get government off the backs of the people. In many ways, she was able to accomplish more in this regard (在这个问题上) than we were, perhaps because she did not have to deal with a Democratic Congress.

I believe it was Mrs. Thatcher who introduced the idea of all the heads of government at the economic summits addressing each other by their first names. I know it helped put me at ease(安逸). When I felt like the new kid at school at my first economic summit in Ottawa in 1981, I waited for a lull (间歇) in the meeting and said, "My name is Ron. , "

I always thought she was a common-sense person who discussed things the way they ought to be discussed. We disagreed from time to time, but the disagreements went away when we had a chance to talk. Before I met with Mikhail Gorbachev of our first summit -- the Fireside Summit in Geneva in November, 1985 -- I talked with Mrs. Thatcher. She told me that Gorbachev was different from any of the other Kremlin lead

A.was feeling bad about it

B.failed to pull herself together

C.was quite calm

D.was in no mood for a talk

I was born in Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virg
inia, of undistinguished families--second families, perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks, some of whom now reside in Adams, and others in Macon countries, Illinois. My paternal grandfather, Abraham Lincoln, emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia, to Kentucky, about 1781 or 1782,where, a year or two later, he was killed by Indians, not in battle, but by stealth, when he was laboring to open a farm in the forest. His ancestors, who were Quakers, went to Virginia from Berks County, Pennsylvania. An effort to identify them with the New - England family of the same name ended in nothing more definite, than a similarity of christian names in both families, such as Enoch, Levi, Mordecei, Solomon, Abraham, and the like.

My father, at the death of his father, was but six years of age; and he grew up, literally without education. He removed from Kentucky to what is now Spencer County, Indiana, in my eighth year. We reached our new home about the time the State came in the Union. It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up. There were some schools, so-called; but no qualification was ever required of a teacher, beyond “reading, writing, and cipherin” to the Rule of Three. If a struggler supposed to understand Latin, happened to sojourn in the neighborhood, he was looked upon as a wizzard. There was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education. Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow, I could read, write, and cipher to the Rule of Three; but that was all. I have not been to school since, The little advance I now have upon this store of education, I have picked up from time to time under the pressure of necessity.

I was raised to farm work, which I continued till I was twenty-two. At twenty-one I came to Illinois, and passed the first year in Illinois--Macon County. Then I got to New-Salem, (at that time in Sangamon, now in Menard County), where I remained a year as a sort of clerk in a store. Then came the Black-Hawk war; and I was elected a Captain of volunteers--a success which gave me more pleasure than any I have had since. I went the campaign, was elated, ran for the Legislature the same year (1832) and was beaten--the only time I have been beaten by the people. The next, and three succeeding biennial elections, I was elected to the Legislature. I was not a candidate afterwards. During this legislative period I had studied law, and re- moved to Springfield to practice it. In 1846, I was once elected to the lower House of Congress. Was not a candidate for reelection? From 1849 to 1854, both inclusive, practiced law more assiduously than ever before. Always a whig in politics, and generally on the whig electoral tickets, making active canvasses. I was losing interest in politics, when the repeal of the Missouri Compromise aroused me again. What I have done since then is pretty well-known.

If any personal description of us is thought desirable, it may be said, I am, in height, six feet, four inches, nearly; lean in flesh, weighing on an average, one hundred and eighty pounds; dark complexion, with coarse black hair, and grey hair, grey eyes--no other masks or brands recollected.

The author is ______.

A.a friend of Abraham Lincoln' s

B.a writer who gives an account of Abraham Lincoln' s biography
