听力原文: Iraqi lawmakers are expected to vote on a security agreement by Wednesday, which will keep the U. S. troops here until the end of 2011 , the parliament's speaker said yesterday. After hours of heated debate, Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani announced that the vote is scheduled for Wednesday and can be put forward provided parties in the parliament would reach an agreement on the pact (Q23). The long-delayed agreement passed the Iraqi cabinet last week and went to the parliament for reviewing. The vote date was originally set for tomorrow. The security agreement will replace the UN mandate to grant U. S. military presence in Iraq legal status from 2009. The U. The Iraqi government wants the parliament to make the decision before lawmakers would set out for a pilgrimage trip to Mecca next week.

The Iraqi parliament can vote on the security agreement only after ______.

A.all parties have agreed on it.

B.the US troops have pulled out.

C.the cabinet has reviewed it.

D.the lawmakers have returned from Mecca.

听力原文: President George W. Bush insisted the Iraq war could still be won and dismissed
mounting calls for a change in strategy as US lawmakers voted again for troop withdrawals.

Bush struck a defiant tone Thursday, insisting on his authority to run the war despite a report from his ad- ministration showing the Iraqi government was making only paltry progress and growing anxiety over the war from fellow Republicans.

Bush frequently invoked Al-Qaeda, warning the withdrawal of 160,000 US troops in the country would mean "surrendering the future of Iraq to Al-Qaeda."

The House of Representatives answered Bush with a vote to withdraw most combat troops by April, as Democratic leaders blasted the president's handling of the war. The House voted by 223 votes to 201 to pass the measure, but the Republican coalition stayed intact: only four party members voted with the Democrats.

What is Bush's reaction towards US troop withdrals ?

A.Support.

B.Objection.

C.Neutrality.

听力原文: President Bush is sending over 20,000 more U.S. troops into Iraq. In an address from the White House last night, Mr. Bush said he considered suggestions from U. S. lawmakers to scale back U. S. efforts in Iraq. But he warned that stepping back now would force a collapse of the Iraqi government.

The consequences of failure are clear. Radical Islamic extremists would grow in strength and gain new recruits. They would be in a better position to topple moderate governments, create chaos in the region, and use oil revenues to fund their ambitions. Iran would be emboldened in its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Our enemies would have a safe haven from which to plan and launch attacks on the American people.

But Democratic Senator Richard Durbin says the president's new plan runs contrary to what his own generals have advised him to do.

General John Abizaid until recently, the commanding general in Iraq and Afghanistan, said, "More American forces prevent the Iraqis from doing more, from taking more responsibility for their own future."

And Republican Senator Sam Brownback on a visit to Iraq said he does not believe Sending more troops to Iraq is the answer.

A collapse of Iraq government may lead to all of the following EXCEPT ______.

A.chaos in the region

B.stronger radical Islamic extremists

C.Iran's gaining new recruits

D.Iran's pursuing nuclear weapons openly
