听力原文: Fast-food restaurants are very popular in the United States. They are popular because the service is fast and prices are low. Of all the fast-food restaurants, McDonald's is probably the most famous and the most popular.

McDonald's is popular for several reasons. Customers can get the same food at any McDonald's in any state or country. The employees are helpful and polite, and the table and floors are clean. Ray Kroc, the past president of McDonald's, believed that helpful employees, a clean restaurant, and good food were necessary.

And McDonald's customers do like the food. They like the sandwiches, the milk shakes, and the French fries. Of all the items on McDonald's menu, the French fires are probably the most popular. They are good because of their special preparation.

People go to McDonald's because of the food, the fast service and the low prices. They say McDonald's is their favorite place to eat in the whole world. They won't move to any town that doesn't have one.

听力原文: Do you like to eat quickly? Do you like inexpensive food? Some people go to fast-food restaurants for these reasons. In the past, people usually went to diners for these reasons. In fact, many people in the States still go to diners today for the same reasons.

A man named Walter Scott had the first “diner” in 1872. It wasn't really a diner. It was only a food cart. People on the street walked up to the cart to buy food. These carts served late-night workers who wanted a cup of coffee and a late-night meal. The meal was a sandwich or boiled eggs. In 1887, Samuel Jones built the first diner big enough to allow the customers to come in and sit down on stools while they ate.

Before long, many diners stayed open around the clock. In other words, people were able to eat in a diner at any time. Diners changed in other ways, too. The original menu of sandwiches and coffee became bigger. It included soup, favorite dishes, and a breakfast menu. In addition, diners soon became permanent buildings. They were no longer carts on wheels.

Diners today look similar to the diners of the early 1900s. They are usually buildings with large windows. Inside, the diners have shining counters with stools, booths, and tables and chairs. People can eat all three meals in a modern diner.

Today, many people eat in fast-food restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King. However, the diner remains an American tradition, and thousands of people still enjoy eating there. It was popular a century ago, and it is stir popular today.

(30)

A.Only breakfast.

B.Only lunch.

C.Only night-meals.

D.All of the above.

听力原文: Americans now spend more money on fast food than they do on higher education, personal computers, software or new cars. The rapid growth of the fast-food industry has been driven by fundamental changes in the U.S. economy. The hourly wage of the average American worker peaked in 1973 and then steadily declined until last year. Women entered the work force in record numbers, often motivated less by feminism than by a need to help pay the bills. In 1975, about a third of American mothers with young children worked outside the home; today about two-thirds of such mothers are employed. As the sociologists Cameron Lynne Macdonald and Carmen Sirianni have noted, the entry of women into the nation's work force has greatly increased demand for the types of services that housewives traditionally performed: cooking, cleaning and child-care. The fast-food industry has benefited from these demographic changes, supplying at low cost the meals no longer prepared in the home and hiring at low wages millions of young women in need of extra income.

The McDonald's Corp. has become a powerful symbol of America's service economy, the rector now responsible for ninety percent of the country's new jobs. In 1968, McDonald's operated about 1,000 restaurants. Today it has about 23,000 restaurants worldwide and opens roughly 2,000 new ones each year. An estimated one of every eight Americans has worked at McDonald's. The company annually trains more new workers than the U.S. Army. McDonald's is the nation's largest purchaser of beef and potatoes. It is the second-largest purchaser of poultry.

(33)

A.Because they are motivated by feminism.

B.Because they have to own money to support their family.

C.Because they don't have to take care their babies.

D.Because their husband want them to work.

听力原文: Many changes are taking place in the "food style" in the United States. Traditionally, meat and potatoes made up American food. Now they have many different kinds to choose from, various international food, health food, and fast-food, in addition to the traditional home-cooked meal. International restaurants are common, because the United States is a country of immigrants. Many cities even have special sections: Chinatown, Little Italy or Germantown. With these vast choices, people there can enjoy food from all over the world.

Health food became popular when people began to think more seriously about their health. Health food includes natural food with minimal processing. There are no chemicals to make it last longer, taste or look better. Most health food includes: beans, cheese and eggs. Fast-food restaurants are now expanding rapidly all over the country. Speed is a very important factor in people's lives. People don't want to waste their time eating. Fast-food restaurants take care of hundreds of people in a short time. There is usually very little waiting and the food is always cheap.

(27)

A.Beans, cheese and eggs.

B.Meat and potatoes.

C.Burger and pizza.
