听力原文: Valentine's Day is the time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and chocolates. But it is not only about public displays of affection: in recent years it has also become big business. In the UK alone, more than ~ 20 million is spent on flowers, while in the United States over $ I billion is spent on chocolates.

(32)Although Valentine's Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins of the day are unclear and hidden in the mists of time. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman killed by a Roman Emperor in the third century AD. It is said that the first recorded Valentine's card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415. It is believed that he sought solace by writing love poems to his wife.

Valentine's Day, or its equivalent, is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions often differ from place to place. (33)In Japan, for example, it is customary for the woman to send chocolates to the man, while (34)in Korea April 14th is known as "Black Day" and is when the unfortunate men who receive nothing on Valentine's Day gather to eat noodles and commiserate with each other.

Valentine's cards can also be used for less than romantic purposes. (35)Police in the UK city of Liverpool sent Valentine's cards to criminals who failed to appear in court or have not paid fines. The cards contained the verse, "Roses are red, violets are blue, you've got a warrant, and (35)we'd love to see you." Who says romance is dead?

(33)

A.More than 20 million.

B.More than 1 billion.

C.More than 80 million.

D.More than 3 billion.

听力原文: St. Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow.

Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him.

Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time, AD 200. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake.

听力原文: The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day. Which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery: according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and of a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14.

Most scholars believe that the St. Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. At this stage, the factual ends and the mythic begins. According to one legend, Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine continued to secretly perform. marriage ceremonies but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. An other legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed "from your Valentine."

听力原文: February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.

On the 14th day, it is customary for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with rose petals!

This is the scene that greets you on Valentine's Day, named after Valentine who was a priest in third century Rome. When the emperor decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives, he banned marriage.

But Valentine continued to perform. marriage ceremonies for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor had him put to death..

While in prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine", an expression that is still in use today.

Valentine died for what he believed in and so was made a Saint, as well as becoming one of history's most romantic figures.

Nowadays, Valentine's Day wins the same popularity among Chinese young people. It is a time when students "don't want to be alone". Some students make Valentine's cards for parents, teachers and friends. Others hold parties at which they exchange small gifts and eat heart-shaped cakes. The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St. Valentine.

听力原文:M: Hello, Mary. Why do you look so upset?

W: Well, every February, candy, flowers and gifts are everywhere. But where is mine? I hate this St. Valentine's Day. Who on earth is this saint and why do we have to celebrate this holiday?

M: Oh, don't be so depressed; your Mr. Right is waiting for you not far away. Just be a little patient. And I can tell you that the saint himself was not very happy on this day either.

W: Why? That's interesting, tell me.

M: Well, there are several stories about this man from both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.

W: That means we are not very sure of the exact history of it, are we?

M: Yes, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance.

W: Then what happened to this Valentine? Why did you say it's a tragedy?

M: Well, one story said that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. When he was a prisoner, Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, in which he signed "From your Valentine".

W: Wow, it's so sad and so romantic!

M: Well, so don't be upset anymore. At least your future Valentine will be there and alive.

W: That doesn't help. I'm still very frustrated.

听力原文: Not many couples stay married for 50 years. Even fewer do so for 75 years. It's almost impossible for a couple to be married for 85 years. But that's exactly what Henry and Maggie Thurston did.

Henry was born on a farm in Iowa in 1857. At the age of 18 he went to Chicago to attend the university. There he met Maggie who had come from Cleveland to study art. She was one year younger.

This was a true case of love at first sight. They got married in 1876, less than six months after they met. In 1877 their first son, Jack, was born. By 1885 they had five children, including their third son, Lou, who became a well-known writer. From 1900 to 1915 Henry and Maggie became grandparents thirty one times.

On February 14th, 1961, they celebrated their 85th wedding anniversary. The day they had chosen for their wedding day had become Valentine's Day. Over one hundred newsmen came to report on the event. The couple was seen on national TV. Most amazing of all, though, was the fact that over 1,500 relatives were also present. The youngest was a three-week-old baby girl. Henry and Maggie were old. He was 104 and she was 103.
