We were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn't manage:, he asked me for help at the last moment. We thought that meant that it wasn't safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late night. This time we were given vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.

The next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing,we were asked back to the airport. Guess what had happened while we were asleep! Our plane had arrived and taken off again. All the other passengers had been forgotten. You can imagine how we felt!

I shall never forget the day when the earthquake took place. The time was about 5 o'
clock in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to take my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together. I had finished my work at 4 o'clock and then gone to the Post Office. Then I stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruits. We liked to have some fruits to eat after our swim.

I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter's school. Over my road was another road which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way. I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one.

Suddenly l saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake! I didn't know what was happening. Perhaps something had gone wrong with my car. I drove a little more slowly and then I stopped the car and at the same moment the road fell onto the car in front of me.

I found myself in the dark. I couldn't move. The bottom parts of both of my. legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn't move them. All around me was quiet. But above me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Then I memorized(记起)what had happened. I had been in an earthquake.

For about two hours nobody came. Luckily I could reach the bag of apples, so at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me. A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road. I called out, 'I’m here!" I heard a shout. Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the road near my car. "How about you?" he asked.

"Not too bad, "I said," But my feet and legs feel as if they're broken." "We'll have you out of there just as soon as we can." They didn't get me out until the next morning. I had been in my car for fourteen hours.

When the earthquake took place, the writer was ______.

A.buying apples

B.rested at a shop

C.doing some shopping

D.under a road built like a bridge

At first I couldn't believe it! There were no【21】in rows; no bells rang; no one had to go
to【22】. Although we all lived "in",【23】made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no "lights out".

The【24】thing was that practically all the students went to class, and very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or【25】class. The new ones always went【26】at first, but this never lasted long. Our teachers treated us like【27】; never did we have to【28】"stand up". I don't know of one student who didn't try his best.

The subjects were the same as those in【29】school, but what a difference in the approach(方式 )! For example, in botany (植物学) we had no classes in the spring or fall, but instead we【30】two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. Then in winter we each studied a few【31】things about what we had grown. In math the students built three different kinds of storerooms—small ones of course, but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a【32】time too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints, figuring out the angles (角度) and so on. I didn't take math. I can't stand it! Besides, I could do the things with numbers. That's【33】! On the whole I think I am a better person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my age, and I can think better. That's probably a real big【34】between the free school and regular school—the amount of【35】.

听力原文:M: As a teacher, can you give us some idea on how the English school system works

W: First of all, most children start school at the age of five and they can't leave school until the age of sixteen. But now we have a new system where children aren't divided off at the age of eleven, instead, they could take the exams at the age of sixteen.

M: (23) Do you think that's an improvement to the system?

W: Well ,it's supposed to be much better because it stops separating children at the age of eleven and gives them a better chance. (22)In fact, what usually happens is that those children who would have gone to a grammar school tend to be at the top end of the comprehensive system and those that would have gone to secondary modern school find themselves at lower levels of the school.

M: Do you think that the present school system is an efficient way of educating children?

W: (24) Of course one of our great problems in England is that we have very large classes and it would be very nice if we could reduce them by at least half.

M: Do you think the subjects that children study are adapted to present-day society?

W: (25) It would be very good if more children at school had the opportunity of learning about the society they live in economic terms and in social terms. So that they are much more aware of the problems that we face today.

(23)

A.Those who were at the age of 16.

B.Those who failed the eleven plus exam.

C.Those who did well in the eleven plus exam.

D.Those who were not qualified for secondary school.
