Trees should only be pruned(修剪)when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small.Pruning involves cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the trees to grow in their own ways. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape.Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus causing wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing the branches that are locking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for diseases, but it is a wound that will heal(愈合).Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, or that there is a period when the tree is at risk.It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce the risk as far as possible. It is essential to make the area which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose.Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without the interference(妨碍)from the leaves and it is, too, very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. Why should pruning be done?A.Because it can make trees grow taller.
B.Because it can improve the shape of the trees.
C.Because it can get rid of the small ranches.
D.Because it can make the small branches thicker.

Automobile insurance: drivers must be financially responsible for any damage done by their vehicles. This means that if you are involved in an accident in which someone is injured or there is significant property damage, you must be able to pay for the damages. You can buy different types of automobile insurance including liability insurance and collision insurance. Because this can be very costly, drivers purchase automobile insurance.
Homeowner's insurance: because most homeowners could not afford to replace their home if it were destroyed, they carry insurance to cover. the value of the home and its contents. A homeowner's policy may include protection against any or all of the following: fire, lighting, windstorms, explosions, theft, and flood. Health insurance: health insurance will pay for medical bills in the event of an accident causing injury. There are three basic categories of health-care coverage. Major medical-expense coverage is designed to protect against large unpredictable medical expenses. Disability income insurance provides cash benefits to the policyholder for living expenses if the policyholder is unable to work.
Life insurance: life insurance is purchased to protect dependents of the policyholder in the event of his or her death. There are four basic types of life insurance. Term insurance insures the lite of the policyholder for a specific period of time, usually one to five years. Whole life insurance builds up a cash value over the years. Endowment life insurance provides both protection and savings, with most of the emphasis on savings. A Brown University sleep researcher has some advice for people who run high schools : Don't start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students whonod offat their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce (确保) bedtime. Instead, it may be that biologically these sleepyhead students aren't used to the early hour. " Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies, " says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problems of adolescent (青春期的) sleep at Brown's School of Medicine. Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time in adolescents. And , at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of adolescence affect sleep needs and patterns. Carskadon says her work suggests that adolescents may need more sleep than they did at childhood , no less,as commonly thought. Sleep patterns change during adolescence, as any parent of an adolescent can prove. Most adolescents prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it's not just a matter of choice-their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns. All of this makes the transfer from middle school to high school-which may start one hour earlier in the morning-all the more difficult , Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the "sleep late , rise late" pattern, adolescents are up against difficulties when it comes to trying to be up by 5 0r 6 a. m. for a 7 : 30 a. m. first bell. A short sleep on a desktop may be their bodies' way of saying,"l need a timeout. " |
