The German demographics (人口统计) are far from exceptional. In Japan, the world's second-largest economy, the population will peak in 2005, at around 125 m. By 2050, according to the more pessimistic government forecasts, the population will have shrunk to around 95 m. Long before that, around 2030, the share of the over-65's in the adult population will have grown to about half. And the birth rate in Japan, as in Germany, is down to 1.3 per woman. The figures are pretty much the same for most other developed countries, and for a good many emerging ones, especially China.
Life expectancy — and with it the number of older people — has been going up steadily for 300 years. But the decline in the number of young people is something new, The only developed country that has so far avoided this fate is America. But even there the birth rate is well below replacement level, and the proportion of older people in the adult population will rise steeply in the next 30 years.
All this means that winning the support of older people will become a political imperative (需要) in every developed country. Pensions have already become a regular election issue. There is also a growing debate about the desirability of immigration to maintain the population and workforce. Together these two issues are transforming the political landscape in every developed country.
By 2030 at the latest, the age at which full retirement benefits start will have risen to the mid-70's in all developed countries, and benefits for healthy pensioners will be substantially lower than they are today. Indeed, fixed retirement ages for people in reasonable physical and mental condition may have been abolished to prevent the pensions burden on the working population from becoming unbearable. Already young and middle-aged people at work suspect that there will not be enough pension money to go round when they themselves reach traditional retirement age. But politicians everywhere continue to pretend that they can save the current pensions system.
In Germany,______ .
A.birth rate has gone up to 1.3 per woman
B.people over 65 now constitutes about half the adult population
C.its population of under-35s is twice as large as that of over-65s
D.by 2030 its working force may have shrunk by 25%
听力原文:W: Is there such a thing as a typical shoplifter?
M: Uh, not really... But there are certain types most shoplifters fall into. Three types, I would say.
W: Tell me more about these three types.
M: Well... uh... people in the first type are what I call "the sudden impulse type". Doctors and psychologists call such people kleptomaniacs. They see something and just can't ... uh... help stealing it. The strange thing about this first type is that the people in it are often well off and could easily afford to buy the thing. Sometimes they don't even need it... and often they're emotionally disturbed in some way.., middle-aged women, for example, whose husbands have left them, or perhaps older men whose wives have recently died.
W: What about the second type?
M: Well, those are people who are really... "little thieves" They work alone, and know exactly what they want before they go into the store. These days a lot of them, but by no means all, are teenagers who steal things they can't afford. Leather jackets, watches, expensive cosmetics, things like that.
W: And the third type.'? What kind of people do you find in the third type?
M: Ah, yes, they're what I call "the experts".
W: Why?
M: Well, first of all, because they're highly organized. And secondly because they do it for a living. They usually operate in groups of three or sometimes four, and they're extremely difficult to catch.
W: Can they make a lot of money that way?
M: Oh, yes. They're very well off, believe me... much better off than a store detective..., or even a journalist!
How many kinds of shoplifters are mentioned in the dialogue?
A.2
B.3
C.4
D.5
Lawyers can specialize m elder law, which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination. Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. 'Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money," one professor says.
Margaret Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She began college as a biology major but found she was "really bored with bacteria. "So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, "I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very. satisfying."
"...Old is suddenly in" (Para. 1 ) most probably means" ______."
A.America has suddenly become a nation of old people
B.gerontology has suddenly become popular
C.more elderly professors are found on American campuses
D.American colleges have realized the need of enrolling older students
As it turns out, the choices you make now can make a big difference in how you feel later in life. I recently learned this lesson the hard way.
It started with an injury: a cracked shinbone caused by too much running on hard pavement. My doctor suggested a bone scan, which showed that my bones axe weaker than average. I don't have osteoporosis, a disease that causes older people to shrink in height and break bones easily. But I'm close.
For me, the diagnosis was a scary wakeup call. I'm just 27 years old, but already I'm worried about things that normally happen only to women more than twice my age. Will I break my hip if I slip on a patch of ice? Is it sale for me to go skiing, lift heavy boxes, play Ultimate Frisbee?
Perhaps what upsets me most is the realization that I might have avoided all of this if only I had thought ahead earlier in life. Childhood and adolescence are the most important times to build strong bones. For you, there's still time. Doctors suggest a variety of foods you can eat and exercises you can do as a teenager to build strong bones for life.
Getting the right kind of bone-building nutrition and exercise as a teenager is like putting money in the hank. Your bones can stay strong, as you get older.
Unfortunately, many teenagers don't think about their bones when they order lunch or decide what to do with their free time. They'd rather snack on chips or slurp soda than think about vitamins.
And parents don't always set the best example. "I was standing by the elevator at Children's Hospital," says Susan Coupey, an adolescent medical specialist at Children's Hospital at Montefiore in Bronx, New York. "There was a 2-year-old child being fed soda by his parents."
The writer's own experience told readers that ______.
A.they begin to shrink in height and break bones easily as they grow older
B.they can avoid the writer's troubles if they think over them later in life
C.they should ask their parents to set the best examples for them
D.the choices they make now can make a big difference in how they feel later in life
听力原文:M: Good morning. Can I help you?
W: Good Morning. We'd like to book a holiday for July, please.
M: Certainly. Where did you have in mind?
W: Oh, well, we haven't thought a lot about it, really. We'd just like to go somewhere hot, you know, and it must be in July.
M: I see. Well, let's get the dates cleared up first, then we can see about destinations. What part of July were you thinking of?
W: Oh, you see, my husband and I have slightly different holidays. I've got the whole month except for the last five days, so I could go from the first to the twenty-sixth, but my husband doesn't start until the seventh, so I suppose it will have to be the middle two weeks really.
M: Ok. Now, let's find a destination. Any preferences...France...Italy...?
W: Oh, not France, we went there last year and it was absolutely packed with teenagers making noise and getting drunk all the time. We definitely want somewhere quieter this year.
M: Well, of course it depends more on the resort rather than the country. There are resorts in every country which are good for the family or the slightly older person. They are usually a shade more expensive, though, as you might expect...
W: We don't mind paying a bit more if it means more peace and quiet, do we?
M: All right. How about Portugal?
W: Oh, that sounds great. We've never been there!

Generation M (多媒体的一代)
Being able to multitask is considered by most people as a welcome skill, but not according to a recent study which claims that young people between the ages of eight and eighteen of the so-called Generation M are spending a considerable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask. It argues that, in fact, these young people are wasting away as much as half of their time again as they would if they performed the very same tasks one after the other.<br>
Some young people are juggling an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. At the same time that they are working, young adults are also surfing on the lnternet, or sending out emails to their friends, and / or answering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods or on another computer. As some new device comes along, it too is added to the list rather than replacing one of the existing devices.<br>
Other research has indicated that this multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function as young people are too wrapped up in their own isolated (孤立的,隔绝的 )worlds to interact with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table.<br>
All this electronic wizardry (魔力,法术 ) is also seriously affecting young people&39;s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their perception (看法,见解 )of the impact of modem gadgets (小巧的机械装置 ) on their performance of tasks, the overwhelming majority of young people gave a favourable response.<br>
The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite as positive. The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets by children affects later development of study skills, resulting in a decline in the quality of writing, for example, because of the lack of concentration on task completion. They feel that many undergraduates now urgently need remedial (补救的) help with study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the workforce need to be taught all over again, as they have become deskilled (失去技能) .<br>
While all this may be true, it must be bome in mind that more and more is expected of young people nowadays; in fact, too much. Praise rather than criticism is due in respect of the way today&39;s youth are able to cope despite what the older generation throw at them.
According to a recent study, what is probably true about the multitasking Generation M? 查看材料
A.They are highly commended for being so effective and efficient
B.They waste more time than they should save, contrary to common assumptions
C.They should prioritize and focus on the most important tasks on hand
D.They need to improve their organizational skills so as to complete all their tasks
M: Yes. I feel a totally different life when I have our company.
W: Could you give me some suggestions on how to be a good leader?
M: I think the biggest mistake many people have is that they don't realize there are two parts of leadership. I think leadership comprises visionary direction and implementation.
W: What are they exactly?
M: Visionary direction hart is where we are going What are we trying to accomplish? And the leaders have to take a major role in setting those. And once the goals are clear, the second hart of leadership is how to get there.
W: What's your outlook on those who want to lead and organize-their own businesses?
M: Well, I think first of all you have to find something you love to do. Then you have to find out how you can make a business out of that. Then come the big issues in running a business.
W: That is the thing I am most concerned.
M: Not to be eliminated, you need a good finance. You need to have some people to help get off the ground and then you gradually learn about managing and leading people.
W: Say I am someone who is just now entering the work force. I am excited and passionate about what I have chosen to do but somehow I have to keep the passion. How can I maintain that kind of excitement so that I can excel?
M: I think the best advice is that when you go to a lob find somebody who is older than you, who has more experience than you and ask him if he would be your counselor.
