听力原文:Olga: Hi Ben! Hi Sally! Come in.

Ben: Hi Olga!

Sally: Hi Olga!

Olga: Did you have any problems getting some basic information for our project on fitness assessments?

Ben: I didn't. There's plenty of information available nowadays, because so many people are interested in keeping fit.

Sally: Yes, I got some useful information we can use from websites

and Ben got some stuff from fitness centres in the city. Q21

Olga: Great! I found some things in magazines and newspapers. I Q22

think we might find the biggest problem is that we have too

much information. Anyway, let's begin. Now, a fitness assessment Q23

is a series of measurements that can help determine

physical fitness. There are several standard tests in a fitness

assessment. Depending upon the assessor, other tests may be

added to achieve a greater picture of fitness.

Sally: Or lack of it! According to my information, the main tests in

a fitness assessment evaluate body mass index, resting heart

rate and blood pressure, and aerobic fitness. Additional tests

may evaluate body composition, lung capacity, flexibility and

strength.

Ben: What exactly does the body mass index tell us about a person's fitness?

Sally: Body mass index evaluates a person in terms of their height and weight to determine total body mass. It can show if a person's body mass measurement exceeds normal limits and thus indicates that weight loss would be a good idea.

Ben: So, it's a bit inexact, then?

Olga: Yes, it is. BMI alone is usually not thought to be the best measure

of physical fitness. Someone who is very muscular may Q24

have a higher BMI than is considered normal, because muscle

weighs more. A true measurement of a body's fat content in a

fitness assessment may be better obtained through something

called hydrostatic weighing, which assesses the body's composition Q25

more exactly.

Ben: Hydrostatic weighing? I've never heard of it.

Olga: I don't have any more information on it. We can make a note of it and look it up later. Sally, you said there were other ways of evaluating fitness? Sally: Er ... yes. A typical fitness assessment. will also evaluate heart

rate and blood pressure. Measuring resting heart rate is important

because it allows you to figure out what the safe levels of increasing

the heart rate are during aerobic exercise. The basic

formula for measuring safe maximum heart rate is 220 minus Q26

age, minus resting heart rate. This figure is multiplied by 0.9 Q27

and the resting heart rate is added back to get the maximum

heart rate at which one can safely exercise. Olga: However, it says here that determining appropriate maximum

heart rate in a fitness assessment should also take into account

blood pressure. A person with high blood pressure should be Q28

evaluated by a physician prior to proceeding with an exercise

programme.

Ben: Definitely! Another common test in a fitness assessment is

aerobic fitness. This looks at the heart rate and oxygen rate Q29

during a moderate workout that may last five to ten minutes.

Evaluations about the ability of the blood to oxy

听力原文:Xavier: Hi Olga. Did you find that information about grade appeals? I found the i
nformation about student records.

Olga: Hi Xavier. Yes, I got it. Let's have a look through together and see what we can find. You start.

Xavier: OK. Educational records, including all student records, are

maintained by the Office of Records in room A167. Student Q21

records are maintained in a manner that protects the privacy of

students and provides eligible people access to the information

recorded.

Olga: I heard something about public information. This can be given

to certain people at the university without a student's permission.

Xavier: Ah, yes. That must be public directory information. The university Q22

defines public directory information as: name; addresses;

university e-mail address; photo ID pictures; telephone

numbers; major field of study; dates of attendance; enrolment

status ...

Olga: What? Like whether they are full-or part-time?

Xavier: Yes. Also, students' hours enrolled in or completed; degrees,

honours, certificates received or anticipated; weight and height Q23

if they are an athletic team member; participation in officially

recognised activities and sports; and institutions previously attended.

Olga: That's a lot of information!

Xavier: Well, a person who wants it must have a good reason for obtaining

it, so essentially only faculty staff can get it. They have Q24

to fill out a request form. whenever they want this information.

Of course, they can approach the student directly and get it

from them ...

Olga: Can a student stop people accessing their information? Q25

Xavier: Let me see .... Yes .... It says that a student may suppress the above public information items by completing and submitting a public directory information form. Forms may be obtained from the office.

Olga: OK.

Xavier: So, what did you find out about appealing against a grade?

Olga: Well, students have a right to a grade review to correct a grade and to a grade appeal as a remedy for an unfair grade in a course.

Xavier: Does that mean there must be a grade review before a grade appeal?

Olga: Yes, but I'll get to that in a minute. A grade appeal refers to

any of the following: the assignment of a grade to a particular

student on some basis other than academic or behavioural Q26

performance in the course; 6 the assignment of a grade to

a particular student by using more exacting or demanding

standards than were applied to other students in that course;

the assignment of a grade by a substantial departure from the

instructor's previously announced or written standards.

Xavier: That seems reasonable.

Olga: Students have a right to a grade review to correct an erroneous

grade and to a grade appeal as a remedy for an unfair

grade in a course. Even before the review, the student must

contact the instructor by midterm of the following term and Q27

request a review and an accounting of how the grade was

determined. If the student is satisfied with the response, the

procedure ends.

Xavier: So, there's no way t

听力原文:W: Hi, Peter. I just wondered if you fancied coming out for a coffee.

M: Oh, I was just writing a letter.

W: Writing a letter! Is your phone out of order?

M: No —well, not exactly a letter. Ben's applied for a job at a children's summer camp, and they've asked me for a character reference. He must have put me down as one of his referees.

W: Oh dear —you're not going to tell them the truth, are you?

M: What do you mean?

W: Well, he's a self-important show-off.

M: Oh, come on, he's not that bad —I mean, kids love him. He's always entertaining his little brother's friends with his magic tricks and silly jokes.

W: Oh yes, he's great with children —but he's a big kid himself, isn't he?

M: Yes, I suppose he is a bit immature.

W: Also, he hates taking orders from anybody. Do you remember that job he had last summer in a restaurant? He ended up throwing a bucket of water over the chef when she asked him to wash the kitchen floor.

M: Oh no, don't remind me. He won't do anything he doesn't enjoy, will he? Mind you, he did run that restaurant single-handed when the chef and two of the waiters were off sick with food poisoning.

W: That's true. He's good at a crisis. But having said that, he's good at causing a crisis as well —I mean, you know the food poisoning was his fault, don't you?

M: Oh, yes —oh dear, this isn't helping. OK. Let's go out for a coffee.

(23)

A.He is applying for a job at a summer camp.

B.His telephone is out of order.

C.He is writing a character reference for Ben.
