The price of public transportation in Beijing has doubled twice since 1989, but it is stil

l a bargain. Using the subway and minibuses used to show class status; now people of all classes take them, while some wealthy prefer taxis or private cars. What a change in just a few years !

But there are downfalls to having more cars on the roads. Fortunately, the government is aware of the problem. No-lead gasoline is the only one permitted in the city, and the rest of the country follows. Thousands of trees are planted in and around the city every year. Children are taught why and how to protect the environment. At the same time, public transportation has marked real progress: buses are everywhere and run frequently. We no longer see those old buses with broken windows. Instead, there are fast buses, double- decker buses, air-conditioned or heated buses, all offering a good service.

The author mainly discusses __________ of public transportation.

A.the price

B.the types

C.the improvement

D.the advantage

阅读理解
The home service industry in Beijing is expected to become more attractive both as a job and as an

industry.

Sources at the Beijing People's Political Consultative Conference said resistance to home service

work is melting away from minds of the city's laidoff workers. The Conference suggested the

establishment of municipal (市政的) centers which supervise property management, household mending

and installation, and house keeping services. Modern city life is creating a need for home services. This

will create job opportunities for laidoff workers, said vice director of the Social Judicial Committee of

the Conference.

Beijing residents have long desired a home service industry. The demand is expected to drive new

economic growth. There are few high quality home help services in Beijing and customers are always

complaining.

In the past, few laidoff workers worked as home helpers, jobs largely taken by young women from

the countryside. At the same time, some city residents have not felt safe trusting rural girls with modern

household machines or with their small children. Many people would pay more for reliable house keepers who are more familiar with city life, but they have had no way of getting one, even though the city is home

to thousands of laidoff workers.

By the end of June this year, there were 30,600 jobless workers in the city. Most of them are women

in their 40's, who are not blessed with particular skills and who have had their work ethics shaped by the

planned economy. Many of them were at a loss when they first realized they had lost their jobs and a

way of life they had got used to for decades.

They never imagined being laidoff by state; they never considered other kinds of employment. For

them, the private sector (领域) meant taking risks; housekeeping implied lower social status. Gao

yunfang, 44, is a pioneer who is breaking the ice. She sells the Beijing Morning Post in the morning, and

works at two households in the afternoon. She earns 1,000 yuan per month.

So she no longer worries about her daughter's tuition at a university in Shanghai.

1. What is talked about in the passage?

A. Home service.

B. Modern city life.

C. Laidoff workers.

D. Social status.

2. Why didn't the laidoff workers like to do home services in the past?

A. Low salary.

B. Lower social status.

C. Dirty working condition.

D. Too much extra work.

3. Why were many laidoff workers at a loss?

A. Because they didn't get used to the new way of life.

B. Because they are too old to find a new job.

C. Because they dislike being laid off.

D. Because they think they lost their social status.

3. In which ways is home service industry good for our society?

A. It meets the needs of modern life.

B. It provides work opportunities for the laidoff worker

C. It is a new industry.

D. A and B.

I was born into a middle-class family in Beijing.Being the eldest of three children, I acquired the ability to “lead” my younger brother and sister. And so, ever since childhood, I have been something of a leader, taking a guiding position in most groups and activities I‘ve been involved in.This genuine gift is one of the most important reason for why I am qualified to pursue a career in management.

I have always had a very pleasant personality. Most people perceive me to be easy-going.I like to express my opinions when I am certain and have never been afraid to do so since I entered college. When I was a kid, I was afraid to go on stage to speak in the public. After persistent self-training, the stage-fright(怯场), finally went away.I was chosen as the delegate of Fudan University to participate in the National Intercollegiate debate contest and won the championship.Another strong point of mine is that I am constantly pushing myself to be the best.I have a broad common sense and even broader interests.I like to read and learn new things, and I rarely get satisfied easily. The area that I need to improve the most is in thinking more freely.

I am also satisfied with myself in my performance during my four years of college.Under the enormous pressure of being an Engineering student, I was able to maintain decent grades while keeping myself busy with a lot of extra-curricular activities. As mentioned in the application form, I was chosen among several hundred applicants to be one of the delegation members of a good will mission to visit the United States in 1988.I worked for the China Youth Travel Agency during the summers to guide tourists from various countries to China’s tourist attractions.Through these, I acquired experience in working with others and, more importantly, became more mature.

I am also satisfied with my adaptability to new environments.I was enrolled in the University of Michigan in September 1991.The sudden change of living, studying and even communicating in a very different place did not give me too much trouble.I finished my Master’s degree in one year with satisfactory grades.

I believe I am intelligent and learn quickly.I started working for IBM in March 1993. Initially, I was assigned to work on a couple of projects that I was not extremely familiar with. This, coupled with the fact that I lacked formal work experience, caused me to have a hard time in the beginning. However, I displayed my sharpness in learning the basics, and brought to the work my usual dedication.By the time I had been there for six weeks, I was ready for even greater challenges. In December 1993, I was promoted to be the Principal Investigator of the project that I am currently working on.
